National Cookie Weekend The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC), which officially kicked off its 100th year of Girl Scouts selling cookies in January, will be celebrating National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, from Friday, February 24th to Sunday, February 26th, 2017. Clean Water Project Earlier this year, each seventh-grader at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District read the book “A Long Walk to Water.” They are now working with their science teachers on a fundraising effort to provide cleaning drinking water to children in Africa who have limited access to such resources. After reading an article about biodiversity and humans’ impact on the environment, the students

learned about a resource called “LifeStraws” that eliminates impurities from the water that is filtered through the device. Inspired by the chance to make a difference, the seventh-graders have been collecting spare change to purchase three of these devices for a school in Africa whereby providing children with clean water for 3-5 years. Students have been donating their spare change in large containers

throughout the multiweek drive and working to see which science class can create the heaviest container. In the spirit of competition, students could deposit dollar bills into their competitors’ containers, which would subtract small measurements off their total weight. To date, the school has raised approximately $800 for the effort.

INSTALLATION DINNER - On February 11th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilmember Valerie M. Cartright attended Stony Brook Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner at Flowerfield in St. James to honor the company’s members for their service to the community. Certificates of Congratulations from the Town Board were presented to 2016 Members of the Year, members with Year of Service milestones and outgoing officers. Rocky Point High School junior Jade Pinkenburg has accomplished something less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the exam have – a perfect score on the ACT. Jade earned the top mark of 36 on the December ACT exam, demonstrating his high

level of knowledge in the areas of English, mathematics, reading and science. This was the first time Jade has taken the exam, but not the first time he had earned high marks on the national level. Previously he earned a 1570 (out of 1600) composite score on the SAT, earning perfect

marks on the math portion. When asked what advice he would offer students who are preparing for either exam, Jade encouraged his peers to “trust your instincts, have faith in yourselves and take your time with it. Be sure to read all directions and sections carefully,” he said. While he still has one more year of high school left after this school year, Jade is aspiring to go into the engineering field and has applied to take a summer engineering program at MIT. And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!
