On the brink of the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, W.S. Mount Elementary fifth- and sixth-graders teamed up to compete in their own games and go head to head to complete eight different STEM-based learning challenges. During the school’s

Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does! Minimizing damage only goes so far. At a certain point, we all need to take the leap. We must choose to forge ahead, or fall behind. I don’t think anyone would prefer the latter. Close your eyes and jump. As the saying goes... Shoot for the moon... Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

Rocky Point Middle School has been awarded the Silver Inviting School Fidelity Award in honor of the students’ and staff’s efforts to keep the spirit and practice of Invitational Education alive and well in the school. The Invitational Education program presents five prestigious Fidelity Awards every two years. Schools who have previously received the Invitational Award are invited to apply for the Fidelity Award this year. The application includes documentation on what the school is doing to support an invitational climate at the school. Essentially, that the school is continuing to work to extend those initiatives and supporting that ideals of IAIE. Rocky Point Middle School was named an Invitational Award winning school last year.

A Great Season Rocky Point High School’s varsity bowling team recently captured second place in the Small School Championships and Wildcard Competition with a total pin count of 3016 (201 per bowler average). As a result, the team competed in the Suffolk County Championships at Bowlero in Sayville. In addition to the team’s overall success, several

students qualified for postseason honors. With an average of 221.2 and ranked ninth overall in Suffolk County and second overall in League IV, 10thgrader Brandon Epp was named to the the Suffolk County All-Star team. As such, he will now compete on March 10 in Syracuse. Brandon was also named Second Team All-County and First Team All League

IV. Tenth-grader Robert Manginello averaged a score of 203.8 and is ranked fifth overall in League IV. He was named to the First Team AllLeague IV. Ninth-grader Sean Vogel averaged 196.2 points and was ranked 10th overall in League IV and named to Second Team All-League IV.

Souper Challenge Three Village Central School District’s W.S. Mount and Minnesuake elementary school students teamed up this February to participated in a Super Bowl-themed community service project - a canned soup drive to help children in need. Guided by the collective

desire to help those in need, the two schools engaged in a friendly competition to see which building could collect the most number of donations. After the weeklong drive, the schools collected 2,137 cans for the Blessings in a Backpack, a national organization that donates meals for students

who would have otherwise gone hungry to enjoy on the weekend. While W.S. Mount collected the higher amount of cans for the contest, both schools agreed that the real winner were the students that would benefit from the collective generosity.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School Science Olympiad team recently captured first place at the Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Tournament and has now qualified to compete in the New York State Science Olympiad Tournament in March. During the regional contest, which was held at

These included such topics as astronomy, chemistry and rocks and minerals, among many others. “Science Olympiad is a great opportunity for students to collaboratively work together to

Emerging Writers A celebration of literacy was recently held in Carleen Parmegiani’s second-grade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School where the students have been learning about nonfiction writing as part of their English language arts curriculum. Family members, administrators, teachers and other students in the school stopped by to hear

the stories and see the illustrations that the class members created. Prior to the event, the students wrote and illustrated their own factbased books, choosing a topic that was important to them and decorating their desks with props to complement their creative works. These included such diverse interests as dinosaurs, Manhattan,

snakes, Brazil, butterflies and one student’s Ukrainian heritage. The books also contained an organized table of contents, researched facts, events, history and even a comments page for guests to sign and thank each student for sharing their stories and encourage them to continue on their writing paths.

Big Bright Beautiful World The Port Jefferson Middle School’s production of “Shrek The Musical JR.” was a resounding success based on the exceptional talents of the cast and stage crew. The musical, an adaptation of the popular movie and Broadway show, engaged both

the 44 members of the middle school drama club and numerous student volunteers from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. The dedication and fun that the students experienced was under the leadership of coadvisers Mary LaSita,

the middle school/high school librarian and music teacher Lisa Scrom. The months of planning, rehearsing and working together culminated in another successful stage performance and glowing reviews from the audience.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the Academy Dental Assisting students recently taught the preschoolers in the Early Childhood Education Program the proper way to brush their teeth. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, with campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.

During a collaborative event, the dental students used a variety of toys and worksheets to demonstrate ideal brushing and flossing techniques to the youngsters. Toys included extra-large, inflatable molars; oversized toothbrushes; toy dental sets; and graphic worksheets. Next, preschoolers watched an animated video about healthy hygiene and then sat in the dental chairs for a free screening. Screenings

were performed by the dental assisting teacher and the former teacher (she now works in another capacity at the school), both of whom are registered dental hygienists. “This collaboration provided my students with handson interaction with pediatric patients and the opportunity to learn and assist in real-time as I performed screenings,” explained Dental Assisting Teacher Tierney Marzigliano.

Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 17th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women.For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute.

Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases.
