taken up sculpture, and now runs an artisanal soap company, Cedar and Bennet, from her home. “It is important for me to constantly learn in creating my artwork, while still giving myself the creative license necessary to form a compelling piece. For all of my paintings I aim to balance realism and

A p p l e b e e ’ s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in
Nassau County and one in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 20212022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*! To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use.
Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Jefferson’s Ferry Rolls Out Expanded COVID-19 Vaccination Program Jefferson’s Ferry, a not-for-profit Life Plan Community for active adults 62 years and above recently expanded its COVID vaccination program to include residents living in the community’s Independent Living cottages and apartments and employees responsible for maintaining Independent Living residences, facilities and grounds. Eligible residents and employees received the first of two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine January 27 and January 28 at an appointment-only clinic held at the Jefferson’s Ferry Community Center. The second dose will be administered February 17 and February 18. Vaccination of skilled nursing residents and staff in the Vincent Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry has been completed as has the first vaccination dose for assisted living residents and staff.
“We simply couldn’t be happier than to be able to provide this critical vaccine to our community,” said Jefferson Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield, who was among those who received a first dose of the vaccine during this most recent clinic. “We are excited about what the vaccine has to offer in health and in reestablishing normalcy within our community. We are looking forward to the coming days when everyone is able to comfortably get together with family and friends.” “The vaccine clinic represents an important milestone for our residents and staff,” said Linda Kolakowski, vice president of resident life at Jefferson’s Ferry. “Without exception, everyone has demonstrated remarkable resilience and positivity throughout the pandemic, maintaining an unfaltering community spirit as we worked together to follow safety
protocols and adopted new ways to embrace friendship and togetherness. The anticipation to celebrate safely as a community is palpable.” “The timing of the vaccine program coincides with coming of spring, and the anticipated debut of some exciting new dining destinations at Jefferson’s Ferry that are sure to be popular,`” continued Caulfield. “Our Journey to Renewal expansion and renovation, which is well underway, will be ready to unveil some new amenities, and these eateries are among them. We have so much to celebrate and be grateful for. This vaccine clinic is the next step to back to the peace of mind that is a hallmark of the Jefferson’s Ferry lifestyle.” The Jefferson’s Ferry vaccination program is being conducted with CVS Pharmacy through the Federal Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program.
Math Marks The Spot Through a grant offered by the school’s PTA, Minnesauke Elementary School math AIS teacher Paul Wilgenkamp is once again transforming the school’s hallways into canvases of mathematical learning. Large geometric floor decals have been designed for placement in the school’s hallways that teachers will use as stopping points while their classes navigate through the building. The decals feature such shapes as equilateral triangle,
trapezoids and circles, along with vocabulary words like diameter, radius and circumference included. “I decided to create this activity after our universal math screening indicated that the geometry domain could use some extra review,” said Mr. Wilgenkamp. “With one simple shift teachers can improve the students’ geometry knowledge while walking to art, music, or lunch. Now, instead of telling the class to stop at the corner, the teacher can
tell the students to stop at the rectangular prism or one of the other 19 geometric decals.” Additional decals focus on measurement, as they reference and visually represent that 100 centimeters is equivalent to one meter, that one yard is equivalent to 36 inches, and that 12 inches is equivalent to one foot. This part of the project is a continuation of Mr. Wilgenkamp’s activity from a few years ago called Minnesauke Measures.
