Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Teen Portfolio Prep Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding
outcomes. Through the years, Girgenti has been recognized for her artwork, the outcomes of her student’s portfolios and for her abilities as an art educator. Teen Portfolio Prep
of Fine Arts program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to expand their body of work as they prepare for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate art courses in high school. In two three-week sessions students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. Students may enroll in one or both sessions of the program. Two sessions are recommended to get the maximum benefit of the program. A breadth of subject matter and techniques will be covered during each session. Learning About New York During the week of January 19th, students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School learned more about their home state through an interactive program during their physical education classes.
The program, entitled Welcome to New York, transformed the school’s gymnasium into an information-packed “New York State,” complete with tour guides. The guides introduced the Port Jefferson students
to more than 20 handson activity centers where they learned more about New York State history, geography, symbols and facts. Activities included ‘fishing’ for trout in the Finger Lakes and hiking in the Catskill Mountains.
Feeding Those In Need Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently announced its fifth grade students will participate in The Heifer Project’s “Read To Feed” program. The program aims to promote reading throughout schools, while providing the opportunity for students to donate a farm animal to a family in need. Students will collect pledges from friends, family and community members to sponsor their cause by donating a certain amount of money for each book read by students. The class will then decide how to spend the total money collected - how many animals and which animal to purchase for a community in need. “This program is not only essential to reinforcing the importance of reading, but to introduce students to the global issues of hunger
and poverty,” said Miller Place School District Superintendent Marianne Higuera. “Students will learn the importance of giving back and will assist all types of people from around the world.” The program began January 15th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and his quest for basic rights and will end February 27th. The initiative works in tandem with students’ lessons from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Movement in classes. The students have been learning about basic human rights and how this affects people in the community, country and world. Students have studied articles in the Declaration including those that talk about the right to have enough food, clean water, healthcare and education. Each class has set a fundraising goal and at the

conclusion of the program will decide how to “spend” those donations. Students can decide to send a certain number of chicks, which provide eggs; llamas, which provide wool; and shares of a heifer, which provide milk and manure for crops to a community in need. With these gifts, families will be able to produce food and clothing not only for themselves, but to sell for profit. Running Into The Records record. During his running career, he has broken the high school’s record for the 1,000, 800 and 600-meter races and earned several championship titles on the National, State and County levels. “Breaking records is awesome, but winning a title is equally as awesome since records can be broken, but title’s can’t be taken away,” said Burke,
who has his sights set on continuing his running streak through the end of the season. With six out of six wins so far this season, Burke, who has been running since the fifth-grade, now faces several more championship races with expectations to once again compete in the nationals.

Commitment To Community From February 9th through February 20th, two of New York City’s favorite casual restaurants, Café Metro and Fresh & Co., will donate a percentage of their sales to Friends of Karen, a tri-state organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families living in the New York tri-state area. The organization has helped more than 13,500 children since its founding in 1978. Café Metro (8 locations
throughout New York City) and Fresh & Co. (11 locations) have been strong supporters of Friends of Karen for the past several years. Building upon excitement for the big game, Arrowhead Elementary School fourth-grade teachers put a football twist on their classroom lessons and coordinated an event they called “Super Friday.” Dressed in team colors, the students and staff members arrived to school the Friday before the
Super Bowl armed and ready to tackle an array of math, social studies and English Language Arts lessons. With the school day divided into quarters, the students engaged in different learning activities that incorporated either the game or the geographic locations associated with the sport during four main blocks of time.

Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads
– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we
pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Students Of The Month Four students from the Middle Country Central School District were recently named January Students of the Month for their above average attitude towards school, extra-curricular activities and community service. The students include Centereach High School senior Gabrini LeBlanc, Newfield High School senior Jordan Jones, Dawnwood Middle School eighth grader Georgiana Wood, and Selden Middle School eighth grader Jordan Bett. “These four students embody the spirit of the Middle Country Central School District and serve
as role models for their peers,” said Middle Country Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “It is with great pleasure that we celebrate all that these students do to help make our district better.” Centereach High School senior Gabrini LeBlanc will graduate June 2015 having completed ten college level courses, never scoring less than an above average level on the three Advanced Placement courses she has already completed. Despite suffering a tragic loss when a house fire left her family displaced, LeBlanc persevered and scored perfect scores on both her English and U.S.
History Regents exams, excelled in the Nursing program through BOCES and was instrumental in organizing the school’s Black History Month celebration throughout her academic career. Upon graduating LeBlanc plans to pursue nursing, become a midwife, and ultimately a physician. Newfield High School senior Jordan Jones was recently recognized as a National Merit Commended student, earning a high score on his Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and is ranked 18th out of 387 students in the senior class. Jones successfully
maintained a 96.6 GPA and will graduate with 33 college credits in June after completing five Advanced Placement courses and one collegelevel course this school year. When not in school, Jones volunteers around the community including an annual spaghetti dinner at Village of Faith Church, Hobbs Farm, and the school’s Trick-Or-Treat Street, Holiday Lane; and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Jones is an active member of student government, Spartan Guys Ensemble, Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society and Village of Faith Youth Group.
Upon graduating, Jones plans to pursue a computer engineering major. Georgiana Wood has maintained High Honor Roll distinction since her first school report card at Dawnwood Middle School. Despite a hearing impairment that leaves her deaf, she currently maintains a GPA of 98 and is enrolled as an honor student in a ninth grade level Living Environment class due to her superior grades. By the conclusion of sixth grade, Georgiana was recognized as a “Triple C” winner, an award that typically goes to an eighth grade student who embodies
courage, character and commitment. Jordan Bett has never received a final course grade below a 90 since the beginning of sixth grade, earning her consistent placement on the high honor roll at Selden Middle School. Bett holds an executive post as “joint chief of staff” in student government, competes on the track team and is a volunteer with the Middle Country Public Library “Mutt Club,” where she helps collect donations for local animal shelters. Upon graduating school, Bett aspires to become a pediatrician.

Taking The Title Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Matteo DeVincenzo secured the 113-pound wrestling title while competing at the Eastern States Wrestling Classic, which took place on January 10th and 11th at SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, New York. DeVincenzo earned the title after defeating several top competitors from four
states, including New York champion Kyle Quinn of Wantagh in a final match, which ended 2-1. “This win means a lot,” said DeVincenzo. “It places me higher in the rankings.” This is not the first time that DeVincenzo, who has been wresting for six years, has found himself in the winner’s circle. running an undefeated season with a record of 31-0 and on January 24th, at the Armstrong meet, which took place at his high school, he earned his 100th career win. DeVincenzo is also a two-time state finalist and placed 4th in the sophomore national wrestling competition.

January. To earn the rating, Buono defeated fencers from Stony Brook, Ward Melville High School and Shoreham-Wading River. Buono, who is enrolled

Lego Enrichment For the second year in a row, fourth and fifth-graders at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School participated in an enrichment Lego program. On January 29th and 30th, the Port Jefferson students, under the direction of S.E.A.L teacher Janelle Bellotti, spent time learning about simple machines and their real world applications
and using that knowledge to build a pull-back car, which was then tested using various engineering theories.
