T
he Port Jefferson Middle School Student Council recently completed a successful Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. During the month of January, students raised funds through an online campaign, organizing several in-school bake sales and hosting a “pay to play” fundraiser, where they sold passes to peers to play computer games during their lunch periods. Thanks to all those who contributed.

Who Are We?
In an effort to have Port Jefferson Middle School students thinking about their futures earlier, the Port Jefferson School District launched a new post-secondary program on January 29th. Using a computerbased program, Naviance, students’ strengths and interests are matched with their post secondary goals. Naviance, which is
already available to Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students, aims to fully prepare middle students for the post secondary planning process that awaits them in high school. During the January 29th launch, school guidance counselors helped students register with the program and complete interest and career surveys.
“The transition from middle school to high school can be an overwhelming experience for all involved,” said Claudia Smith, K-8 assistant principal. “It is our goal to provide students and parents with information and resources, such as Naviance, to ensure that this process proceeds smoothly.”

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.
Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to
refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

The Port Jefferson Middle School Student Council recently completed a successful “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. During the month of January, students raised funds through an online
campaign, organizing several in-school bake sales and hosting a “pay to play” fundraiser, where they sold passes to peers to play computer games during their lunch periods. Additionally, the council held Pajama Friday, which enabled teachers to wear
their pajamas to school for a $5 donation. The Student Council’s efforts yielded a $1,585 contribution to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which surpassed their initial goal of $1,200.

Skype Send-Off Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School third grade students in Ms. McCann and Mrs. Autino’s classes recently Skyped with United States Army Private Leander Martin. Martin is currently serving at Fort Campbell, KY after completing training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He will soon deploy with his unit overseas. The Miller Place School District students
asked the soldier questions about his job in the military, what his daily life is like and why he decided to join the army to serve his country. Each student thought of their own question and personally asked Private Martin during the Skype session. The students will continue the conversation with letters they will send to the soldier once he is settled in his deployment
location. Miller Place students began writing to Private Martin after learning he had lost his parents as a teenager, and therefore, was not receiving any correspondence from home. The students aimed to provide a sense of home for the soldier, while learning about military life and the importance of sacrifice and courage.
Band Festival Earl L. Vandermeulen High School studentmusicians had the honor of participating in the 58th annual Mid-Island Band Festival at Sayville High School on January 30th.
These student-musicians – Miles Kaming-Thanassi, Jillian Lawler, David Moir, David Rotunno, Amanda Sarubbi and Timothy Skula – were selected to participate based on
teacher recommendations and NYSSMA scores. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to all six performers.

SKYPE SEND-OFF - Miller Place School District students in the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School thought of and personally asked United States Army Private Leander Martin questions concerning military life during a Skype conversation before his deployment. The students will write Private Martin letters once he is settled in his deployment location.
Headed to Regionals Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifthgrader Sophie Blumenthal has secured a spot in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee to be held at Hofstra University on March 13th. Blumenthal won the chance to compete after
participating in her school’s fourth- and fifthgrade school bee, held on January 25th. She took the top spot after correctly spelling the word “excursion.” Runners up in the school competition were fifth-
grader Benjamin PerezFletcher and fourth-grader Michelle Wu. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to Sophie Blumenthal and wishes her luck in the next round of the competition.
This season, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School wrestling team is consistently proving that it has what it takes to capture first-place titles. On January 9th, the team took first-place by outscoring 14 opponents at the David Sorenson Memorial Invitational held at Long Island Lutheran in Brookville. At the same tournament, three teammates, Vin Miceli, Joe Evangelista and Matteo DeVincenzo, took first-place wins in their individual weight classes.
“This win was a total team effort,” said Coach Mike Maletta. “We couldn’t be prouder.” A week after the David Sorenson Memorial Invitational, DeVincenzo took his second first-place crown at the Eastern States Classic, held at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York. To earn his latest title, DeVincenzo defeated three other state champions from a field of 60 wrestlers. Simultaneously, he was voted Champion of
Champions by his peers. DeVincenzo’s winning season continued when the graduating senior, who will be attending Princeton University in the fall, set a school record of 141 career wins at the Armstrong Cup, held in Port Jefferson on January 30th. The team will next compete at the Section XI, Division II Championships on Feb. 13 at Center Moriches High School. That meet will be followed by the NYSPHSAA Championships in Albany on February 26th and 27th.

Port Jefferson Middle School sixth-graders gained insight into Egyptian culture during a special hands-on workshop on January 28th. During the event, the students, who are studying
Egypt in their history classes, were introduced to world traveler Mike Harrold. Mr. Harrold spoke to students about his travels to Egypt and about the country’s history, culture

On Sunday, January 31st, Congressman Lee Zeldin presented World War II Veteran, Frederick C. Stone, of Stony Brook, New York, with the prestigious Purple Heart Medal. The Purple Heart Medal was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York, in 1782, during the Revolutionary War. the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving our country, were wounded, killed, or have since died due to wounds received during battle. It is awarded in the name of the President of the United States. In August of 2015, Congressman Zeldin presented Mr. Stone with the Bronze Star Medal. On April 28th-29th, 1945, while overseas aboard the U.S.S. Butler gunship in Okinawa, Mr. Stone was engaged in a battle with the enemy, in which he was wounded.
Mr. Stone’s Bronze Star Medal citation specifically states, “Although wounded during action with the enemy he helped to remove a more seriously wounded man to safety and returned to his gun…” Based upon this citation, the Congressman’s office inquired with the Navy as to his additional entitlement to the Purple Heart Medal and the Navy agreed. On Sunday, January 31st, 2016, Mr. Stone received the Purple Heart award on behalf of a grateful nation.

Shining at String Festival String students from the Port Jefferson School District showcased their musical talents at the Secondary Long Island String Festival, held on January 31st at Ward Melville High School.
The middle and high school musicians were selected to perform on a competitive basis based on their NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendations. The Port Jefferson School District extends its
congratulations to David Bershadsky (grade 8), Danielle Goldstein (grade 12), Ibuki Iwasaki (grade 10), Phoenix Jampol (grade 9), Trey Pisano (grade 9), and Ava Schully (grade 9).
Student Art Exhibit From February 26th through May 1st, 2016 the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will present its student art exhibition, Colors of Long Island: Student Expressions sponsored by Astoria Bank. This annual exhibit affords an opportunity for hundreds of students from across Long Island to display their artwork in a museum setting. The museum will recognize the achievements of these talented students at two
receptions scheduled for March 13th and April 3rd. Parents, teachers, students and the general public are invited to attend. Visit www.longislandmuseum. org for details. The museum is proud to include more than 300 works from 135 public and private schools across Long Island. Art teachers from grades K through 12 were asked to submit up to three pieces, either created individually or by groups. Traditionally, the theme,
“Colors of Long Island,” allows for many creative interpretations. While some students refer to Long Island’s landscapes, others prefer to focus on the cultural diversity that makes Long Island so colorful. The varying interpretations of this theme will be portrayed through all types of media, including watercolors, sculptures, quilts, drawings, oil pastels, photographs and computer graphics.
