The Port Jefferson School District will conduct pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration for September 2020 on Monday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, located at 500 Scraggy Hill Road in Port Jefferson. To be eligible for
pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, children must be 4 and 5 years old, respectively, on or before December 1, 2020 and a resident within the boundaries of the Port Jefferson School District. Please be aware that the Port Jefferson School District does not provide transportation for prekindergarten students.

They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.
All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. EASY ACCESS MEANS EASY LIVING.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

Port Jefferson’s Interact Club Supports Hope Children’s Fund Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Interact Club continue to be mindful of the projects they embrace, and their most recent one will help someone 7,300 miles away from Port Jefferson. The students hosted a movie screening at the elementary school
and raised money that was presented to Hope Children’s Fund, an organization that supports children at the Hope Children’s Fund Home in Meru, Kenya. The $365 that they contributed will provide for the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and medical care of one child for one year.
“This is something that our club hopes to continue supporting in the future through various fundraising activities,” club adviser Deirdre Filippi said of the students who share a passion for both community service and friendship.

Warm Catholic Hearts Provide Handmade Blankets
Wednesday, January 29th, Hicksville – As an outward expression of their faith, members of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic school community coordinated a winter-themed service project to benefit patients in Catholic Health Services cancer care facilities. The project, done by faculty staff, students, Girl Scouts and parents completed and donated over 150 handmade blankets to a team from Catholic Health Services at a ceremony at the Department of Education’s Hicksville offices on Wednesday. The blankets will be used to help keep cancer patients warm and comfortable at various CHS facilities across Long Island. “We hope that the warmth of the blankets, and the prayers and warm wishes of these beautiful school communities brings comfort to all who are suffering.” Said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. Students Engage In Coding Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students are engaged in coding and creating with small robots that combine the physical and digital worlds. Librarian Selinda Stout introduced them to Ozobots and the students
immediately started to navigate the simple and easy to use robots. “I have never seen them more excited,” Stout said of the students who are so eager to open the bins that house the robots. Once they become familiar with
the color-based coding – a visual way for them to understand coding and programming – they will be tasked with fun, educational and gradelevel appropriate activities while having the freedom to create their own.

Duo Represent Rocky Point’s Music Program Two students from the Rocky Point School District represented the district’s music program when they attended the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association 15th annual Day of Horn recently held at Northport High School. Jeremy Moriarty, a fifth grade student at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School, and Valerie Dorr, a seventh grade student at Rocky Point Middle School, were accompanied by Rocky Point band director Vincent Ragona.
They had the opportunity to work alongside guest artist Dr. Heidi Lucas, a renowned musician and educator, active advocate for new music and associate professor of horn at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she works with applied horn students. “This was an exceptional experience for these two students and opportunities like this help to continue motivating them in their musical skills,” Ragona said.
