Port Jefferson students put their knowledge of geography to the test as they participated in the early rounds of the 26th Annual National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee. Students in fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the U.S. participate in the 2014 bee, sponsored by Google. At Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, fourthand fifth-grade Studies Enriching Academic Learning students competed in a preliminary bee, facilitated by SEAL teacher Janelle Bellotti. Participants answered oral questions that tested their knowledge in the areas of cultural, economic and physical geography, plants
and animals, geographic comparisons and more. Hailey Hearney, Aaron Held, Jack Reilly, Lucas Welinder and Peggy Yin had the most points and advanced to the final rounds, where Lucas was named champion of the school-level competition. Port Jefferson Middle School teacher Philip Giannusa organized a similar bee, which was open to all students in grades six through eight. Participants were quizzed on U.S. geography, cities, historic places, continents and world geography. Eighth-grader Leland Held, who placed second in last year’s school bee, came out victorious with his correct answer about the population of Luxembourg. Tying for second place were sixth-grader Saoirse Cohen and seventh-grader Sarah Hull. More than 40 middle school students gave up their recess to participate in the bee, which gave them additional exposure to geographical studies. “The bee is a fun, interactive way to further
This year the Long Island Museum marks its 75th anniversary with new exhibitions and significant changes, bringing new life to this historic treasure in the heart of Stony Brook. Visitors are invited to join the celebration! Opening March 1st after a brief winter hiatus, the museum will be revitalized with a new exterior paint job and the introduction of an annual series featuring outdoor sculpture. Exhibition space that has been dormant for several years will come alive with exciting cultural and educational exhibitions. The newly named Victoria Costigan gallery of the Art Museum will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract
paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014. The main Art Museum gallery will feature Brothers In Art: William Sidney Mount and Shepard Alonzo Mount Paint America, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by the Mount brothers. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will qualify to compete in their state bee on April 4. Winners of the state bee are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national competition May 19th-21st in Washington, D.C.

Suffolk Bus Service For Students Stony Brook University students seeking options for off campus dining, shopping and leisure activities on Sundays have a new option for transportation: the Suffolk Transit Connection. Mall and points in between starting at 7:20 a.m. The last campus pick up on Sundays is at 6:30 p.m. Suffolk County Transit and Stony Brook University started this partnership in May of 2012 after students on the Transportation & Parking Student Advisory Committee requested increased off-campus transportation. “After successfully providing this public transportation option over the past 18-months, it seemed appropriate to work with Suffolk County to expand these services for
our students on Sundays,” said James O’Connor, Director of Sustainability & Transportation Operations. “We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The partnership between Suffolk County and Stony Brook University is beneficial to the students, the environment and the local business destinations in our area. It’s a win-win for the whole community.”

Hitting The Halfway Mark In Stride
To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over. Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges. Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average. Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to. Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively. A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution. An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known. For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style
Orthodontics in West Islip. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board. This process can be influential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

The Eve Of Excitement? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,
don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching
the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?
and administrators representing 20 Long Island school districts on January 23rd in the Hauppauge School District Board of Education Room. ccvidhelp is a grass roots initiative created to provide students and parents with the support they need for Common Core mathematics in grades K through 9. ccvidhelp started organically through conversations between Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht who recognized the desperate need among parents for Common
Core math module resources (support) to help their children at home with the new math curriculum. While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org
• Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other Internet support resources. Multiple YouTube videos are currently available to help parents and children in their struggle with the Common Core curriculum. The initial video library was presented at the July 23rd meeting. “We provided an overview of the ccvidhelp initiative, outlining many of the details while providing demonstrations of the various technologies employed to create, edit and host the tutorial videos,” stated Dr. Murphy. “Attendees were very enthusiastic, and some signed up right away to join us in our efforts. Going forward, we will continue to build our video library with the goal of creating math videos that align to the Common Core Math Modules for Grades K-9 over time.”
L.I. Cares Donation The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season. “On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule
Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.” Long Island Cares has distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population. Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island. “The Long Island Junior Soccer League is proud to partner with Long Island
Cares in their fight against hunger,” said LIJSL President Addie MatteiIaia. “We are so grateful to all of our clubs, teams, players and families for their generosity. They have shown time and again that they are willing to go above and beyond, not only to be the best players they can be on the field, but to be the best people they can be off it.” The LIJSL will be holding another food drive during the 2014 Spring Season. Donations will be accepted in the food collection barrels at the entrance to the Collins Soccer Park for games being played there starting on March 29th and concluding in June.

Interpreting The Report Card When your child brings home his or her mid-year report card, it is important to read it carefully and take note of a number of key areas. And with the Common Core State Standards going into effect this school year, Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center reminds parents that report cards may look different this year than in years past. “The report card format may change from last year, as states roll out report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards,” says Huntington. As you evaluate your child’s report card this month, keep in mind the following: Understanding the report card format is critical. If your child’s teacher did not provide an explanation of the report card format that
is being used, be sure to request one so you are clear on how your child is being evaluated. The newly enhanced report card structures that many schools are now using are not only aligned with state standards (Common Core), they also are supposed to provide parents a more meaningful assessment of their children’s progress. Effort and comprehension are areas of focus. One major change with the introduction of Common Core is the greater emphasis on critical thinking skills. Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these
marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards. Progress toward mastery of grade-level standards is the new norm. While every school district may be different, parents across the nation can expect report cards—particularly in the elementary grades— to measure students’ growth over the course of the school year, not just the term for which they are evaluated. As such, it is important that you understand the different progress indicators and what any numeric codes used actually mean regarding your child’s achievement of grade-bygrade benchmarks. It’s all about college and career readiness. The Common Core State Standards were created to ensure all students
graduating from high school are capable of succeeding in collegelevel classes and in their careers. That overarching purpose is reflected in the details of your child’s report card by showing what a student is expected to know and your child’s progress toward those targets. Keep that in mind as you read through your child’s report card. As always, contact your child’s teacher with specific questions. “The great thing about Common Core and the way teachers will now be assessing students is that there is a big-picture goal in mind,” says Huntington. “This creates a perfect opportunity to notice your child’s strengths and progress, while keeping an eye on areas to work on.”

Artistic Treasures Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students are learning about various techniques, master artists, landscapes, insects and animals as they work to create their own beautiful drawings, which will be transformed into memorable keepsakes with the help of the PTA. During their art classes with teachers Cara Buonconsiglio and Treewolf West, the school’s kindergarten students are learning about landscapes
and the work created by artist Georges Seurat, while others are learning how to draw teddy bears. The first-graders are learning how to incorporate texture and rubbing techniques when drawing animals and butterflies, while secondgraders are learning to create enlarged objects by mirroring the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. After speaking about the different elements of art, each student created original artwork based on
their grade level’s theme. Once completed, the drawings will be transformed into stickers by the Square 1 Art program. Each student will receive a sheet of keepsake stickers and families will have the chance to purchase the art on additional products. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund programs provided in the school, such as PARP, visiting authors and other student SELECT CHOIR PERFORMS - On January 20th, members of the Edna Louise activities. COURT OF HONOR - On January 24th, a Court of Honor ceremony for James Gannon, a member of Boy Scout Troop 427 in Setauket, who attained rank of Eagle, was held at the Setauket Neighborhood House. To become an Eagle Scout, one must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. For his Eagle project, James raised funds, built a bench and beautified the garden at Good Shepherd Hospice located on the grounds of St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Port Jefferson.

As an extension of their classroom lessons, W.S. Mount Elementary School fourth-grade students had the chance to learn about the Eastern Woodland Native Americans and their culture during a recent inhouse field trip. During the two-day Journeys Into American
Indian Territory program, the students visited an extensive museum of artifacts, walked through a model longhouse, created their own pottery, partook in authentic traditional games and participated in a simulation exercise to learn about how the Iroquois government helped to
influence the formation of the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, the students learned about the early settlers’ culture and teachings by hearing traditional stories and performing several songs.
No Name Calling As part of the school’s STARS character education program – sharing, trustworthy, accepting, respectful and serving – Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff members engage in meaningful character building activities each month. This January, the school participated in a No Name
Calling Week, during which they encouraged others to be mindful of their word choices and coordinated a pajama day to visually represent how they were putting name calling to bed. Additionally, the students and staff members were encouraged to sign and honor a school pledge that read, “I believe that

bullying and calling other students hurtful names is wrong. I pledge to do my best to: not bully other students or call them hurtful names; intervene, if I safely can, in situations where students are being called names; and support efforts to end bullying and name calling.”

Port Jefferson Middle School students in Monica Consalvo’s seventh-grade class recently took an indepth look at the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of the humanitarian’s birthday. Students listened to and analyzed Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech and constructed evidence-based claims to support their findings. They highlighted the speech’s central ideas and themes of freedom, justice and brother/ sisterhood. A PowerPoint
presentation that explored the new monument and its inscription wall, which displays quotes from King’s speeches, sermons and writings, was also shown. “This lesson incorporates Common Core methods of learning, including the analysis of primary source information,” said Consalvo. “Students worked to identify lines from the speech that struck a chord with them and added their ideas on an evidence-based worksheet that correlated to the lesson.”
“Not all people are treated as equals, but Dr. King encouraged us to try and change that,” said one student who recently visited King’s memorial in Washington, D.C. “Being there had a big impact on me. The inscription wall of quotes was inspiring and still has value today even though they were said in the 1960s.” “All students can learn from Dr. King,” said another student. “We all have dreams and do what we can to follow them.”

On Friday, January 24th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico were joined by Keith Caputo, Cassy Caputo and Kathleen Johnson to pull the winning ticket in the Moriches Community Center Fundraiser Raffle. Keith Caputo decided he wanted to set the benchmark for the community in raising money to build a Community Center in Center Moriches. Regional Champions U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz today announced that a team of students from East Setauket was among 11 teams of middle and high school students who won their regional competitions for the 2014 National Science Bowl this past weekend and are advancing to the National Finals in Washington, D.C., in April. “The National Science Bowl challenges students to excel and heightens their interest in fields vital to America’s continued scientific advancement,” Energy Secretary Moniz said. “Congratulations to these students for advancing to the National Finals. I wish them the best of luck in the competition.” The National Science Bowl brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math. Winners will advance to the National Science Bowl held from April 24th-28th in Washington, D.C., for the final middle school and high school competitions.
The top 16 high school teams and the top eight middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Prizes for the top two high school teams for the 2014 National Science Bowl will be announced at a later date. The high school team that won the 2013 National Science Bowl received a nine-day, all-expenses-paid science trip to Alaska, where they learned more about glaciology, marine and avian biology, geology and plate tectonics. The second-place high school team at the 2013 National Science Bowl won a five-day, fully guided adventure tour of several national parks, which included a whitewater rafting trip. More than 225,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl since it was established in 1991, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. Approximately 14,000 students competed in the National Science Bowl last year and more are expected to participate this year. School Tax Exemption At its January meeting, the Rocky Point School District adopted a resolution calling for a school tax exemption for community veterans. Under the New York State Alternative Veterans’ Exemption program, qualifying district veterans can now receive reductions to school taxes levied on their primary residences. “In addition to the STAR program offered to all residents, our district has annually offered a number of exemption programs to volunteers and members of the community, including our volunteer fire and ambulance workers and members of clergy,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael F. Ring. “When the district learned about this new offering, we could not think of a more worthy group to assist and found it only fitting to opt into this program, the benefits of which veterans are already receiving from other taxing jurisdictions. I am grateful to our Board of Education for authorizing the district to opt-in to this exemption.” Under the approved legislation, applicants are eligible to receive:
• A 15% reduction in assessed value to veterans who served during a time of war. • An additional 10% reduction in assessed value to veterans who served in combat zones (includes recipients of expeditionary medals). • An additional reduction in assessed value to veterans who incurred service-connected disabilities, equal to one-half of their serviceconnected disability ratings (regardless of whether such veterans served in combat zones). • Percentage-level benefits, which are subject to maximum dollar limits set by each taxing jurisdiction. As the Town of Brookhaven has also approved this taxation exemption, veterans living in the Rocky Point School District need only apply if they do not currently receive the town-level Alternative Veterans’ Exemption. “I am truly appreciative to the school board and superintendent for being proactive and pro-veteran with the passing of this resolution,” said Joseph
Cognitore, commander of the VFW Post 6249 in Rocky Point. “It means a lot to the veterans and especially those recently returning home. It provides a great opportunity for them to address items in their personal lives, as this extended hand helps them get by and support their families – especially in a time when other resources and financial supports are being reduced.” Veterans who are not yet registered with the Town can access information about how to file for this exemption at: http://www. tax.ny.gov/pit/property/ exemption/altvetoverview. htm. On January 19th, New York City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), along with School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) presented the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Twenty teams from Long Island and the metropolitan New York area took part in the daylong competition. The FTC is a program through FIRST, which is an organization that focuses on teaching children and young
adults STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills through stimulating robotics competitions. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament. The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum

During each twoand-a-half minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using a platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points. Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as teamwork, creativity, and inspiration.

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week course unique to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on
consecutive Wednesdays from March 19th to April 23rd, 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to
better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate
feelings and locate helpful resources. Attendees will also learn how to increase their ability to make tough decisions and balance their lives. For those who would

This year, instead of sticking with flowers or chocolates for your valentine, why not give a gift with a future? Specifically, consider making a meaningful financial gift. However, a “meaningful” gift doesn’t gain its meaning from its size, but rather its impact. What types of financial gifts can have the greatest effect on the life of your loved one? Here are a few possibilities: Charitable gifts — Your valentine may well support the work of a variety of charitable organizations. Why not give to one of them, in the name of your loved one? Not only will you be helping a group that does good work, but you may also be able to receive a tax deduction for your contribution, assuming the organization qualifies for tax-exempt status. And if you give financial assets, such as appreciated stocks, you may also be able to avoid paying capital gains taxes on the donated shares. IRA contributions — Many people don’t contribute the maximum annual amount to their IRA (which, in 2014, is $5,500, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older). While you can’t directly contribute to your valentine’s IRA, you can certainly write him or her a check for that purpose. Gifts of stock — Like everyone else, your sweetheart uses a variety of products — and he or she might enjoy being an “owner” of the companies that produce these goods.
