Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30. Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title. Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at fouryear Division II and

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card. The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this timetested tradition. Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New

Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture

Boy Scout Event The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council’s Trailblazer District will be holding an exciting event open to the public hosted by our very own Scout units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) on Saturday, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sun-Vet Mall in Holbrook. The event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting which continues to thrive in Suffolk County. The Trailblazer Mall Show will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with an opening parade showcasing each units flags and banners. Planned activities include a district-wide Pinewood Derby runoff, booths by the district’s units with awards for creativity of the activity, adherence to the theme, and proper identification of the unit, chartered organization, and hometown. People are requested to bring non-perishable food items which will be donated to a local food pantry.

Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection. Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it’s easier to send cards when the time comes.

Dancing, singing, instrument playing and more will be part of the line-up for the 10th Annual Port Jefferson Middle School Talent Show, scheduled for February 27th, at 7 p.m. in the Port Jefferson High School auditorium. The show will benefit Friends of Karen, a Port Jefferson-based charity that assists families with a child with a lifethreatening illness. The

Business Education Teacher Virginia Rios said, “Students apply what they learn in the classroom

during field trips. Here at the mall, they learn how to navigate by using the mall directory. They observe window displays and take note of how stores advertise. These are all things they learn in the classroom and a followup lesson will take place about what they learned at the mall.”

New Season Opens

After a brief winter hiatus, the Long Island Museum will reopen its doors on Friday, February 27th, with exciting exhibitions to celebrate spring. Ansel Adams: Early Works will feature 41 photographic prints taken early in Adams’ career. Most museumgoers are only familiar with the heroic, high-gloss, highcontrast prints that Adams manufactured to order in the 1970s-80s, coinciding with the emergence of the first retail galleries devoted to photography. Much less familiar are the intimate prints, rich in the middle tones that Adams crafted earlier in his career. This

exhibition focuses on the masterful small-scale prints he created from the 1920s into the 1950s. Coinciding with the Ansel Adams exhibition, the museum presents American Horizons, East to West: Landscape Painting and Photography. Drawn both from the LIM’s permanent collection and from notable private and museum loans, this exhibition focuses on the enduring landscape tradition in American art. From 19th century artists that include Frederic Edwin Church, William Sidney Mount, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Moran, to 20th and 21st century painters and

photographers including Ansel Adams, Jay Jaffee, Jane Wilson and Robert Dash, this exhibition suggests the supposedly timeless nature of a fixed American landscape is illusory. Both exhibitions will be on display in the art museum through August 2nd, 2015. The Visitors Center will reopen with our annual student art exhibition Colors of Long Island, featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. Colors of Long Island is sponsored by Astoria Bank and will be on display through April 26th.

opportunity to create a business from the ground up. Students are able to test their ideas by selling their products to students from other Virtual Enterprise firms across the world.

Rocky Point Middle School’s two robotics teams have qualified to compete in the Long Island Championship this March. During the Annual First Lego League (FLL) Qualifier Tournament held in late January, both teams – the Radical Robotix and Robo Eagles – dominated the field and outperformed some of the top clubs from across the region. In addition to their bid to

the Long Island contest, the Radical Robotix team took home the first place trophy for “Gracious Professionalism” for the second straight year. During and leading up to the contests, club members work to solve real-world engineering problems and challenges by applying math, science and technology skills. This year’s challenge is FLL World Class, which

called for students to work on ways to improve the learning experience of others on a topic of their choice using technology. The FLL Tournament is an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. Officer Of The Year

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that one of its finest was named Officer of the Year and awarded The Howard C. Stock Memorial

Award at the 45th Annual Police Awards sponsored by the Southampton Town Kiwanis Club. Correction Officer Monique McCray received the top award

during a ceremony held at the Atlantis Banquet Hall in Riverhead on Friday, January 23rd. Each year, fifteen East End police organizations compete for

the coveted distinction, and also gather to pay tribute to exceptional officers from each agency. Officer McCray, a ten year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was selected Police Officer of the Year for her dedication to improving outcomes for incarcerated youth. She was instrumental in developing Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative and has made it her mission to provide guidance, mentoring and hope to justice involved teens under her care at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. Officer McCray is also a leader in her community of Central Islip where she is a board member of the Youth Empowerment Project and a founding member of

Building Bridges Uniting Communities. In addition to The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award, Officer McCray was presented with the Correction Officer of the Year Award along with Deputy Sheriff Michael Kern, who was named Deputy Sheriff of the Year during the ceremony. Officer Kern is a Drug Recognition Expert with the Sheriff’s Office and an instructor for the New York State Drug Recognition Training Program. He has taught hundreds of officers throughout New York State in advanced policing techniques and his enforcement efforts have resulted in countless DWI and DUI arrests in Suffolk County. Deputy Sheriff Kern is

a ten-year veteran of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and also served as a New York City Police Officer for seven years. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco could not be more proud of the work of Officers McCray and Kern, and stated, “Suffolk County residents are fortunate to have two of the finest public servants working on their behalf as members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. I am grateful to the members of the Kiwanis Club for paying tribute to our staff, but also for recognizing the fine work performed by highly dedicated law enforcement officers in all the East End towns.”

blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and environmental damage. Another idea is to recycle old gold jewelry into new items. Jewelry stores can melt down precious metals and turn them into entirely new and beautiful pieces.

Give thoughtful gifts. If a loved one is involved with or supports a particular charity or environmental action group, consider giving a donation to that organization in lieu of a traditional Valentine’s Day gift.
