Rocky Point High School’s Quantum Chaos robotics team recently earned a second-place finish at the Fresh Meadows West Qualifier competition and was awarded the “Judges” award trophy in recognition of the team’s effort, performance and dynamics.

The team, which is comprised of students in ninth- through 12thgrade, has been meeting since September and began building their robot in November. The completed robot was required to meet a specific size and build limitations and be designed to accomplish

On Tuesday, January 26th, at 2:14 p.m., the Town of Brookhaven’s 451. TOWN Call Center reached the milestone of 1,000,000 calls since it started operations on September 12th, 2007. The 451-TOWN Call Center is the stateof-the-art constituent response system that enables residents to utilize one phone number to access non-emergency government information services. Here’s Hoping By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Musical Collaboration Three Village Central School District students helped break a Guinness Book of World Record during this year’s SCMEA Day of Horn. The students, who came from Minnesauke,

Setauket and W.S. Mount Elementary Schools as well as P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy Junior High Schools, broke the record for the most horns performing on stage at one time. The record was

originally 180, held by a group of Pakistani sheep hornists, but this year’s SCMEA group surpassed that with more than 270 players on stage.

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students cozied up with hundreds of books this winter as they participated in the school’s annual We Are Reading More (WARM) program. With the goal of reading 500,000 minutes, students read countless fiction and non-fiction stories during the month-long event and logged the amount of minutes they spent reading.

Upon completing each book, students reﬂected on the pieces using graphic organizers. For fiction books, they described the characters, setting, problems and solutions revealed, and for nonfiction books, they detailed five facts they learned from the book. The program also included several theme days, which called for the students to either wear such things as socks on

“Sock it to Reading” day or participate in activities. In celebration of the school reading 557,080 minutes, each student was awarded a small prize and entered into a rafﬂe to win various giveaways from local stores and businesses. Additionally, teachers competed in several athletic challenges on the last day of the initiative to celebrate the students’ reaching their reading goal.

LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME!

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff recently celebrated world languages through a series of interactive events during this year’s Foreign Language Week. Throughout the week, students tested their knowledge of languages during a trivia contest, showcased their creativity as part of a door-

decorating contest and enjoyed listening to daily announcements in the three languages studied at Murphy and visiting a traveling mural exhibit. Additionally, the school continued its tradition of hosting cooking and culture classes for Three Village fifth- and sixthgrade students. Each of the three classes featured a

different foreign language, including Italian, French and Spanish, and instructed attendees how to prepare a native dish from that region. The week concluded with a celebratory International Night, which featured dishes from around the world and music and dance performances.

History Bee Champs W.S. Mount Elementary School fifth- and sixthgrade students had the chance to answer questions of historical importance as they participated in the National History Bee. More than 60 students completed the contest’s

written test, from which 25 semifinalists were selected to compete in the competition’s oral round. Sixth-graders Neal Carpino, Matthew Chen and Ari Zucker emerged as the top competitors and now are eligible to

participate in the Online Qualifying Exam. Their scores on that exam will determine if they advance to the Regional Finals and compete in one of the 39 buzzer competitions across the United States.

Back to School a number of academic challenges, while also experiencing what their child has learned in classes so far this school year. Parents and students rotated between three activities where parents experienced the students’ daily gym activities and tested their knowledge of the fourth grade curriculum. Families played board

games including Uno, Connect Four, Guess Who? and Scrabble before working together to identify various board games - without names - displayed throughout the hallways as part of a scavenger hunt. Students received commemorative pins for participating at the conclusion of the event.

Minnesauke Elementary School’s Kids Care Club created 75 cards and 50 bookmarks for the Message of Hope Foundation. The organization seeks to deliver messages of hope

to children with special needs, chronic and life threatening illnesses. They deliver “happy hope bags” to hospitalized children nationwide. Minnesauke’s creative

crafts will aid the foundation in reaching their mission of collecting 100,000 Happy Hope Cards in 2016 to package in the bags.

Two Port Jefferson School District studentmusicians were recently selected to participate in the prestigious SCMEA All-County Instrumental Jazz Ensemble. Trey Pisano, a 10thgrader who plays double

bass, and Samuel Florio, an eighth-grader who plays trombone, were both named to the ensemble after a highly selective audition process. Both students will perform at Centereach High School on February

6th. Pisano will also travel with the ensemble to Albany on March 8th to perform for the New York State Legislature at the capital building as part of a “Music in our Schools” month celebration.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Jillian Colucci has been named an All-American soccer player by the National Soccer Coaches Association of

America (NSCAA). She received her prestigious award at a luncheon, held at the Baltimore Conventions Center on January 16th. “Jillian is an amazing student-athlete whose hard work, dedication and leadership don’t go unnoticed.
