As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,
“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Students throughout Joseph Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point School District celebrated their love of reading during a monthlong initiative called W.A.R.M. (We Are Reading More). During this time, students were asked to read in school and at home for enjoyment, hoping to reach a schoolwide goal of 500,000 minutes, and engaged in a number of
literacy based activities. Included in these was a visit from author Douglas Florian. In preparation for this visit, teachers and students read his books and created dragons related to his poetry. Additionally, some classes had poetry slams and poetry parades, in which they recited the published piece and many classes also created posters and signs welcoming Mr. Florian to the school.
In recognition of the school surpassing their goal of 500,000 minutes, students earned a number of raffles and prizes. However, the biggest treat was being able to see their teachers take part in competitive yet silly Teacher Races. The staff competed in various races from a Ping-Pong ball catch game to a toilet paper mummy wrapping.

Business Savvy and constructed a full financial write up on the proposed company. “Through all of these activities, VE students learn professionalism, business acumen, corporate knowledge, presentation skills and teamwork,” said teacher Dorothy Burns. “Students also develop hands-on knowledge of the expectations of both the workplace and the global economy as VE replicates all the functions of a real business.” The students presented their completed project during this year’s Virtual Enterprises Long Island Trade Show and Business Plan Presentation at Farmingdale State College. Out of more than 40 firms represented at the event, Rocky Point won third place for “most creative firm.” In addition to the
entrepreneurial skills acquired, the students also learned valuable job market lessons, as they were required to complete a job application and recruitment process. Throughout the course the students also gained valuable insight from a variety of professionals, including those serving on the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council. VE is an in-school, live, global business simulation that places emphasis on project-based, collaborative learning and the development of entrepreneurial skills. This experiential learning model program is made up of a global network of student-run businesses in over 40 countries. It transforms high school students into business professionals and their classrooms into offices.
Nassakeag Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District learned how to be friendship superheroes and stand up for others during a recent character education assembly program called “Sweethearts and Heroes.” During the event, presenter Tom Murphy spoke with the students about the definition of bullying and taught them his superhero “ABCs” of combating bullying. The students also learned the
original meaning of a “bully,” as Mr. Murphy described that a “16th century bully” was actually considered a “sweetheart,” or someone who pushed a person to do their best through encouragement and determination. The program also included interactive components that further demonstrated the techniques the students could use to create a positive impact in the world. In addition to the assembly programs, the buildings sixth-
graders attended a training session with Rick Yarosh, the “wounded warrior.” During the event, the presenter spoke about how his life was suddenly changed, the importance of never giving up “hope,” and how everyone should be treated with respect. To help ensure the program’s message had a lasting impact on the school community, the school’s teachers also attended an informative workshop with the presenters.

As part of their study on the Native Americans, fourth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District participated in a hands-on workshop called Journey into American Indian Territory. The program brought the history and lives of the Eastern Woodlands people into the classroom through visual presentations and
group activities. Students began the twoday program by watching a video about Native Americans and spent the afternoon visiting a traveling museum of artifacts and learning how to play traditional games that encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills. Throughout the museum tour, the students took an up-close look at animal pelts, musical instruments,
traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools. They also each took a turn grounding corn and touring a replica longhouse. On the second day of the program, the students learned about Native American government and created clay duck decoys using traditional techniques and materials.
