Ward Melville Scholar-Athlete A perennial powerhouse and all-around strong student, Ward Melville High School senior Alexis Reinhardt has been named a News 12 Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar-Athlete. Alexis, or Lexi as she is often called, has been on varsity field hockey since the eighth grade. She has also been on the varsity lacrosse team for the past four years. Earlier this year, she was named a Player of the Year by Newsday for her contribution to the sport of field hockey and was an integral part of leading Ward Melville to the state
championship. As a student-athlete, Lexi is focused, driven and determined to always do her best both in the classroom and on the field. She served as a captain this past season for the Ward Melville field hockey team and earned All-State honors. Lexi has taken on leadership roles as an underclassman for the lacrosse team as she is organized, motivated and a true leader. She earned All-Division Honors both her sophomore and junior lacrosse seasons. Lexi embodies the true meaning of a “student-
athlete” as she holds both her academics and athletics to the highest regard,” said Peter Melore, executive director health, physical education, recreation, health services, driver’s education and athletics. “All in all, she is simply one of the best allaround young ladies here at Ward Melville – student, athlete and person,” said field hockey coach Shannon Sioss. This well-rounded student-athlete will be continuing her lacrosse career at Cornell University in the fall.

Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution. One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone. Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you an introduction to what I went through at my worst:
on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because my racing mind did not extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or At 3 AM on a July 2012 six full blown panic attacks morning, I lay helpless per day, generalized
behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it. By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression. It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer. This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community. After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again

anxiety, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder. It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.” “Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and

Learning From History In partnership with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, ninthgrade students enrolled in the local history and government course at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School visited Brewster House in Setauket in order to advance their historical, thinking, research and literacy skills. According to the WMHO’s website, “built in 1665 and considered the oldest house in the
Town of Brookhaven, the Brewster House was home to six generations of Brewsters. The house has transformed over the centuries from the oneroom cottage to its present saltbox structure. During the American Revolution, Joseph Brewster operated the house as a tavern and general store, entertaining British troops inside. American Patriot Caleb Brewster, cousin of the Joseph
Brewster and presumably a frequent visitor to the house, was a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring during the Revolutionary War.” “Field trips that pair us with our local historians provide wonderful learning opportunities for all students beyond the traditional classroom instruction,” said Dr. Paul LEARNING FROM HISTORY - P.J. Womanhood & Hollywood By Allison Kugel Kind, conscientious, courageous and refreshingly candid, Ms. Vivica A. Fox has proven that as Hollywood careers go, second acts are often the sweetest. The multi-hyphenate actress-beauty entrepreneur-author is embracing life and not looking back, except to pull from her well of wisdom for her memoir, Every Day I’m Hustling. Allison Kugel: When are you Angie and when are you Vivica? When do you take off the Vivica and become Angie from Indianapolis? Vivica A. Fox: Well first off, that’s Angie Fox from 38th and Emerson in Indianapolis (laughs)! I’m Vivica Fox when I hit that red carpet and I’m ready to slay the game. That’s what I do. But I love that I have in my life, and in my journey, learned when to be Angie Fox. And that’s mainly when I’m with my family, time off, hanging out with my godchildren, having my Me Time and learning to take some Me Time. That’s when I’m no makeup, baseball cap, chilling and blending in.

Allison Kugel: Your book is part memoir and part motivational guidebook for success. Tell me about your own mentor, or mentors…
Vivica A. Fox: It’s part of life. It’s going to happen. And it’s like you just asked, “Do you know that you’re sexy right now?” But do people also know that for the last few years, that’s what’s been going on in my life? I embraced it and I got in front of it. I didn’t let it define me or make me want to whittle away. I don’t know why with women, we can’t talk about our bodies and what we go through, share it with others, and not feel like we have to hide that from people. I’m sharing it, and I got in front of it and took care of myself. I really feel like it made me take good care of myself.
Vivica A. Fox: My mentor would have to be a good friend of mine, and my first acting coach, Sheila Wills. I’m her two daughters’ godmother. Sheila, I met when I was doing [the daytime soap opera] Generations. She took me under her wing, and she would work with me with auditions. I would go into those auditions and just nail them. I attribute my success to her.
Allison Kugel: Do you prefer yourself that way?
Allison Kugel: Coming from the Midwest, your father was a school administrator, your mother worked for a pharmaceutical company, so you really had no ties to entertainment or Los Angeles for that matter. What gave you that spark of courage to believe that you could become a successful actress? Vivica A. Fox: I was introduced to the world of fashion and modeling by Madame King, my late auntie. She had her own beauty salon back in the day. She was the first one to cut my hair and put me on a runway. I was kind of bitten by the bug at thirteen. From that point forward, I just fell in love with magazines and fashion. Then I went to go see Michael Jackson in concert, and Diana Ross in concert. I had never seen African Americans being so fabulous, and I was like, “Where
Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about motherhood. I know you have all these nieces and nephews, and godchildren. I feel like motherhood, meaning the energy of motherhood, is something that is innate in all women. We have a need to nurture. How does that energy express itself through you?
She would say, “Vivica, you’ve got to stay ready. You got to be ready. You’ve got to take care of yourself.” And people who inspired me to be who I am would be Diana Ross and Pam Grier. Allison Kugel: Do you know that you’re incredibly sexy? Is that something you’re aware of? Vivica A. Fox: Thank you! I appreciate that. Got to keep it tight and right, girl (laughs)! Allison Kugel: More so, now, than twenty years ago, in my opinion. Vivica A. Fox: Maybe because… No, not maybe! Because I am comfortable in my own skin. I’m very comfortable with me. I have embraced my womanhood through my pluses and my minuses. I’m good with me right now, so that’s what you’re seeing. My spirit is happy, more than
Vivica A. Fox: I’m Mama Bear all the time! I have a nurturing instinct and I think I get that from my mother. My mother always loved to take care of others. Still to this day, she doesn’t take as good care of herself, because she is always looking out for others. I got that quality from her. When I walk on a set, I’m always making sure that I speak to everyone, that I try to make people as comfortable as possible. In that way, I am very motherly. It’s just something in me, I like to look out for others. But the older I’ve gotten, I’ve learned to look out more for myself, as well. And I’ve learned a very important word: No. Allison Kugel: How do you define glamour and beauty? Vivica A. Fox: Someone who is a goddess, who just radiates confidence; someone who owns her moment, who seizes her moment. I believe that beauty radiates from the inside. Especially nowadays with these build-a-bodies, and everything is just makeup and fakeness in my opinion right now. It’s when you meet a person and they are a beautiful person, they radiate confidence and
kindness. I find beauty in a woman that has no makeup on, but she’s confident in her own skin and radiates kindness and does for others. To me, that’s beautiful. Allison Kugel: What do you think is the biggest misconception about success? Vivica A. Fox: That it’s easy. When you’re successful, usually it’s taken a long time to build a career. It isn’t something that happens overnight. It takes time to build a career, and a career means being able to go through different stages and chapters of a career, not just being the hot chick of the moment. For me, I went from being the hot ingenue chick, to now building my brand and producing and directing. Allison Kugel: Do you want Hollywood to be colorblind in writing and casting roles, or do you want to be identified, and cast, as an African American actress?
Allison Kugel: I know that God is speaking to me when… Vivica A. Fox: Woo! Hmm. All the time. Every day when I wake up and I can thank Him for letting me see another day. I would say, I know God is speaking to me all the time, and He helps me make better choices. Allison Kugel: My spiritual mission in this life is… Vivica A. Fox: To be kind, to do unto others and to leave a good mark. everything. That’s a success. Vivica A. Fox: Oh my gosh! To be honest with you, the older I’ve gotten, the more I prefer it. I work so much; I’ve been so blessed and so busy lately that I enjoy when I can have that Me Time. In fact, today I don’t have to be on. That’s what I really love about being with my godchildren. When they see me, I’m just G.G. or G-ma. G.G. stands for Gorgeous Godmother. G-ma, I don’t know where they got that one from, but I have five godchildren. Two of them call me G-ma and the other ones call me G.G. They like hanging with me. Not the drama or the glamour, they just want me.

The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to self-direct their services. Self-direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with support that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over how funding is used to purchase needed support and services. While the number of individuals choosing to self-direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. In addition to some of this foundation’s initiatives: Big Time Glee, Nassau Voice, The Crafting Connection and Mid-Week Meetups, they also offer workshops and classes based on the interests and needs expressed by individuals in their self-directed community… one being their Emergency Preparedness Training. This training seeks to assist young adult and adult individuals that are selfdetermined and living in their community to develop a plan for staying safe. In light of what many of us experienced as a result of Super Storm Sandy, it has become evident that we are not all fully prepared for being evacuated, living without electricity or living without cell phone communication. Many were traumatized because of the changes made to their everyday life. The Emergency Preparedness Training/Workshops are comprehensive and based on California’s Feeling Safe, Being Safe program. The program is appropriate for all self-determined

individuals, their families and the people who support them. Instruction about important procedures and protocols for before, during and after a disaster will be presented. This training is being reintroduced by popular demand and will be offered in Suffolk County in March and in Nassau County in April. In order to run these classes, the foundation is asking for donations of first aid kits, monetary donations (to cover the cost of class materials) supplies, as well as donations of space for other classes to be held around Long Island. Additionally, The Nature Experience is a new PBS Community Foundation class that was introduced last year. This course has enriched the lives of many self-directed individuals through learning about and having contact with the natural world. Enrollees gain knowledge about the animals that can be found living in and around Caleb Smith State Park/Nature Preserve, located in Smithtown. The Nature Experience provides an all-inclusive social environment, where friendships can develop through shared interests and experiences. The instructor, Jordan Ofgang, is a certified K-12 Special Educator and a life-long resident of Long Island. He is also an avid nature lover and explorer! Jordan leads the group weekly for the following: a lesson on one or more animals, a mindful hike focusing on the lesson content and nature safety, a wrap-up for group discussion, social time and snacks. These popular classes, and more, are made possible through the generous donations of individuals, businesses and the community at large that share the goals and mission of the PBS Community Foundation. Cultures Unite in Education A delegate of educators from the Chinese Province of Anhui were welcomed to the Port Jefferson School District to experience and learn about the educational opportunities in an American school. Port Jefferson was selected as one of only two districts for its reputation as a highly successful school district. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano welcomed the visitors in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School library and introduced them to district administrators during a welcome reception that included Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik performed by the middle school orchestra students under the direction of teacher Christian Neubert. Dr. Casciano’s remarks included a mention of
the high school’s national Blue Ribbon status, the numerous graduates of the district who go on to attend some of the most competitive universities in the country and the diverse backgrounds of the students who attend the schools. “Our education is well-rounded with many courses of study to meet the varied individual needs of our students,” Dr. Casciano said to the visitors. He also thanked them for visiting the schools and encouraging Port Jefferson’s educators to be reflective and constant in improving educational opportunities for students. Student leaders and administrators then guided the educators on a comprehensive tour of the high school, middle school
and Edna Louise Spear Elementary School. Organized by Stony Brook University, three Mandarin language translators joined the educators as they witnessed interactive lessons, learned about mindfulness activities, listened to chorus members sing, tried out physical education equipment, watched students involved in art projects and, through the translators, asked thoughtful questions about reading, writing, life skills, and the high school’s numerous Advanced Placement classes in world history, statistics and physics. The visit culminated with a lunch and discussion on their educational perspectives and goals with schools district personnel.

Share Your Truth So Others Can Share Theirs “You have been assigned this mountain so that you can show others it can be moved.” - Mel Robbins Some of you may have read a recent article that ran in South Bay’s Neighbor titled, My Journey with Anxiety, written by yours truly. The article was an essay that featured an excerpt of my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a Life Unhinged and on the Record. In the article, I chronicle a time in my life, during the summer of 2012, when I suffered from especially severe bouts of anxiety and panic attacks. Since touring with my book, doing press and speaking engagements, I transformed into an advocate for mental health as I learned some of the statistics surrounding anxiety disorders. For example, I was shocked to learn that 40 million Americans have experienced (or will experience) some form of anxiety disorder in their lifetime. My initial shock at that statistic was largely due to the fact that for so many years I had felt alone with
this disorder, and I carried some degree of shame. After my book was released, I became fearless about sharing my experiences with anxiety and panic. Once I put my story out into the world, the shame and embarrassment seemed to dissolve as if by magic. I eventually healed from that acute bout of anxiety through a series of shifts I made in my life, including: talk therapy, spiritual studies, writing, speaking, dietary changes, and so forth. We all need to be physically, emotionally and spiritually fortified in order to become and stay healthy. That includes our mental health. As I revealed my truth to friends, acquaintances, family members and countless strangers, the most amazing thing happened. People began to direct message me on social media, call or email me to thank me for sharing my story. They also confessed their own experience with anxiety, phobias, depression and panic attacks. It made me glad to know that my book and my story helped people, but I never could have imagined that people I thought I knew
were telling me these stories. You really never know what someone is going through in their inner world. After my article, My Journey with Anxiety ran in South Bay’s Neighbor (for some of you, it may be in this issue you are holding in your hands) one by one, a few co-workers came over to my desk, and as if to say, “This is just between you and me, because you get it,” shared their own experiences with severe anxiety and panic attacks. What I have come to realize is that by sharing my truth, I gave permission for others to share theirs. The unspoken conspiracy of silence is then broken. People feel safe to share their most intimate and sometimes painful life experiences with you when they see that you have shared your own. When you share your truth, you give, both, yourself and others such a wonderful gift. You not only liberate yourself; you liberate other people to feel safe sharing their truth.

Zucchini Pie
By Terry Rydzynski of Commack, New York All recipes are made with love, but when passed down through multiple generations, they carry tremendous meaning. South Bay’s own Terry Rydzynski loves to reminisce about her late Aunt Sally and the Zucchini Pie recipe that Sally passed down to her. “My Aunt Sally’s mother passed this recipe to my mother, who passed it on to me and my daughter,” shares Terry. “We make this dish on big holidays as an appetizer before the main course. I made my Zucchini Pie on Christmas for my twenty-five guests and people ask for it every year.” In remembering her beloved Aunt, Terry continues, “Aunt Sally is gone, but her recipe lives on in our family, year after year.”
How To Make Zucchini Pie Combine: 3 cups thinly sliced zucchini (you can also substitute asparagus) 1small chopped onion 1 cup of Bisquick mix 4 large eggs 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon parsley flakes (or 1/4 cup of finely chopped fresh parsley) salt and pepper to taste Mix all together, put mixture into a greased 12” baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for thirty-five minutes. Ward Melville High School seniors Kelsey Ge, Maya Pena-Lobel, Megan Specht and Elizabeth Wang have been named Scholars in the 2019 Regeneron Science Talent Search, a program of the Society for Science and the Public. This honor was bestowed upon the students based on their comprehensive science research projects. As Scholars, each student was awarded a $2,000 prize and an equal dollar amount is donated to their home school to be applied to education in science, engineering and math. Of the 300 Scholars, 40 will advance as finalists and be invited to Washington, D.C. in March to participate in the final judging, displaying their work to the public, meet notable scientists and compete for awards, including the top prize of $250,000. Suffolk Waterways Restoration Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the completion of more than $7 million in dredge work as part of the county 20182019 Priority Waterway Dredging Program. The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has now completed dredge work in seventeen priority waterways across six towns to ensure safe passage for the commercial and residential fishing and boating industries. “This completion marks an important milestone to ensure that our waterways are safer for boaters throughout Long Island,” said County Executive Bellone. “Now our commercial fishing and boating industries can
have greater confidence when navigating local waterways while also strengthening our shoreline.” Suffolk County utilized an in-house, four-person dredge crew under the Department of Public Works Waterways section in addition to third-party contractors. All together in 2018-2019, projects where completed in the Towns of Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island and Islip. In total, approximately 167,000 cubic yards of dredged material has been placed along approximately 11,000 feet of shoreline to restore local beaches and increase storm resiliency.
Additionally, the County Executive announced the completion of two restoration projects with significant public benefit: the Meschutt County Park Beach Nourishment and the Coecles Harbor Revitalization project. The Meschutt County Park Beach Nourishment project restored approximately 1,300 feet of bathing beach in the park, which is located along the Great Peconic Bay, providing residents with areas for bathing, snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing. In addition, the protective feature design of the newly nourished beach includes an engineered berm that increases storm resiliency. Over the past 3 years this
Park has hosted close to 150,000 visitors and yielded over $400,000 in parking revenue alone. Coecles Harbor, often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Peconics, underwent extensive shoreline restoration helping address a critical need for the town of Shelter Island. Crews completed dredge work in the Harbor restoring safe passage for thousands of boaters that utilize the harbor annually for public uses such as long-term and shortterm transient mooring, and recreational pursuits including boating, fishing, and shell fishing.
