The Interview Process

College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can

handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being

judged by a stranger that has the power to inﬂuence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation and get you through the process. It is their job to ensure that the college has a steady inﬂux of capable young minds. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Both you and the interviewer are merely vessels for advancement.

Circus Project

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students have been participating in a variety of literacy-based activities this month as part of their WARM (We Are Reading More) initiative. Throughout the month, students have been encouraged to take time each day to read for pleasure and keep track of the minutes they spend

enjoying a good book. As a complement to the program, geologist and author Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek visited the school and spoke with students about the world of nonfiction writing. During the assembly, Mr. Tomacek shared how he developed a love for the subject early on and his mission to write books that are both

exciting and educational. In addition to speaking about his work, he conducted a few hands-on experiments with the students. He demonstrated concepts such as displacement and air pressure by using an empty soda bottle to fill an attached balloon, and explained how the operation of a boomerang rests heavily on Bernoulli’s principle.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely

blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake

me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and ﬂower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

The family thought they were preparing for a family holiday photo shoot. NOPE! Mom and Dad were stunned to see the gift come off the fire truck! Friends, neighbors and a bunch of strangers stood outside singing Christmas Carrols as Emma got acquainted with her new wheels. Emma’s trike was in part donated by the White family, currently of Massapequa Park. Members of the White family fulfilled their grandmother’s (Ruth White, age 97) wish of

On Saturday, January 18th, Councilwomen Jane Bonner and Valerie M. Cartright attended the Court of Honor ceremony for three members of Boy Scout Troop 204 in Miller Place. The event was held at the Miller Place High School. Those honored were Nicholas Alexander O’Mara, Nicholas Anthony Gabriele, Jr.and Nicholas Joseph Castelli. All attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest in the Boy Scouts of America. “Eagle Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can tell about this outstanding group of youngsters, our future will be in good hands,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “The work that they do, whether it’s an Eagle project, volunteering or just being mentors and role models to other kids, it sets a great example for their peers to follow.

I congratulate them and their parents on this achievement, and say thank you for their service to our community.” Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright said, “I salute each of these young men for the hard work and dedication demonstrated thoughout their journeys to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Nicholas O’Mara, Nicholas Gabriele, and Nicholas Castelli each have impressive resumes and completed meaningful projects. area for these endangered birds.” To become an Eagle Scout, one must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. The projects that these scouts completed are: • Nicholas Alexander O’Mara constructed three Chimney Swift Towers at West Meadow Beach. • Nicholas Anthony Gabriele, Jr. planted trees and shrubs at the historic Miller House. • Nicholas Joseph Castelli constructed two display cases honoring the military at the First Baptist Church in Patchogue. Since the first Eagle Scout Award was presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the Eagle Scout rank.
