It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American

What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be

spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)

to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

Ward Melville High School junior Casey Gavigan has excelled in a way that only a few elite athletes have; she has been named New York State champion in swimming and has helped her team

win the Suffolk County Championship title for the 23rd consecutive year. During the course of the season, Casey broke the school record for the 100-yard backstroke and had a personal best time in the county and state qualifiers, which earned her the opportunity to compete at the New York State Championship and USA Swimming’s Junior Nationals. Casey entered the state championship, ranked fourth in the state and went on to win first place in the 100-yard backstroke, making her a two-time state champion. Last year, Casey was a member of the

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) opted for an alternative winter break close to home this year, and spent their time helping people in need. “The alternative winter break allowed a group of students to stay in New York and work as a team,” said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry on the Long Island Campus of SJC. “We visited various work sites for Habitat for Humanity where we repaired residual damage from Superstorm Sandy. Coordinating and leading service projects like these allow us to see hands-on, real demonstrations of our mission statement.” In early January, a group of eight SJC students and two staff members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses began

leadership, service, character and citizenship – the students were inducted into the prestigious organization surrounded by family, friends and educators. During the event, NJHS President Allen Liu and each of the officers spoke about the pillars that define the organization and coordinated a traditional

their winter break with a visit to a Habitat for Humanity site in Breezy Point, a neighborhood in Queens, New York that suffered significant damage due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The group was able to rebuild a porch railing for an elderly woman and paint basement walls to renovate a home. The following day, the group continued to work in Breezy Point, where they painted and spackled walls for homes that were damaged in the storm. The third day of work brought the group to the St. John’s Bread & Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. There, they joined a team of volunteers to help serve more than 1,000 plates of breakfast and lunch to the hungry. In

addition, they were able to fulfill the pantry requests of approximately 125 people, wash dishes and prepare food for mobile meals unit. “For me the most powerful thing was to be able to help people still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy,” said Angela Vetere ’18, freshman at the Long Island Campus of SJC. “Finding out two years later that people are still rebuilding was a humbling moment, but seeing that Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County is still dedicated to getting people back in their homes made me proud to be working with this organization.” For more information about SJC, visit www.sjcny. edu.

Applications are now being accepted through April 15th for the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. The Summer STEM Program is held in three sessions: June 1st-6th for rising 8th-9th graders; June 8th-13th for rising 10th graders; and June 15th-19th for rising 11th graders. The Summer STEM Program is an overnight academic program designed for rising students in good academic standing who have a keen interest in math and science. Summer STEM 2015 will have the theme “Land, Air And Sea: Exploring Navy Technology On All Fronts.” The STEM Program gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through handson practical learning. Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom. The academy’s current students, called midshipmen, help run the Summer STEM Program and act as mentors to students. Summer STEM accepts 640 students for their three sessions from roughly 6,300 applications each year. All students selected to participate pay $425 for this academic summer program and are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy today is a prestigious four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the

Rocky Point High School Volleyball player Rachel Magnuson has been selected as an Ambassador for the SideOut Foundation, an organization established

to unite volleyball players and coaches as they work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. Only 18 people in the country were selected to receive this honor. In addition, a Rocky Point volleyball alumnus, Catie Swiderski, was also selected for her college. The Side-Out Ambassador Program was launched in 2011 to recognize those students who involve their schools and communities in the

planning and execution of a breast cancer philanthropic and educational event. Rocky Point has been a large supporter of the organization’s efforts to raise funds for breast cancer education through its annual Dig Pink fundraiser. Each year, the school dedicates one fall volleyball game to the cause – athletes wear pink colored uniforms, volunteer to raise funds through bake sales, donations and silent auctions.

Collegial Circle As part of the Port Jefferson School District’s theme to focus on best practices, teachers and staff recently participated in a Collegial Circle, hosted by middle school Principal Antonio Santana. The program focused on how methodologies related to visualizing the learning process can be implemented to optimize student learning in Port Jefferson classrooms.

Faculty participants engaged in lively discussions revolving around a Harvard University publication entitled, “Visible Learners, Promoting ReggioInspired Approaches In All Schools.” The publication, which was produced by Project Zero, describes how observing and documenting learning can change the nature of

It features five key principals - that learning is purposeful, social, representational, empowering and emotional. “It asks teachers and educators to look beyond the surface to understand who their students are, what they come to know, and how they come to know it,” explained Santana.

Board Honors Students The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education recognized the charter members of the Earl. L Vandermeulen High School’s new Investment Club with a certificate of recognition during their January 13th meeting. “These students deserve the highest complements

for their persistence and for attracting 15 percent of the school’s population. They have done a good job,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert The Investment Club, which has more than 50 members, launched in October 2014 after student Dan Scarda garnered

student signatures and BOE approval. The club focuses on the financial industry and participates in mock stock market competitions. Middle school Spanish teacher Bob Ferenga serves as the club adviser.

Civic Members Honored On January 12th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended a meeting of the Sound Beach Civic Association (SBCA) where she was delighted to present Certificates of Appreciation to members Mike Baselice and Ann Moran. Mr. Baselice, who recently stepped down from his position as a

trustee on the board, was recognized for his many years of service to the SBCA. Ms. Moran was likewise recognized for her generous donation to the Sound Beach Veteran’s Memorial. In memory of her late husband, Ann made a substantial contribution toward the purchase of seven plaques placed at

The students will be afforded the chance to enroll in future courses throughout their high school careers. The students applied

for the SHP through a qualifying exam, which tested their knowledge on higher-level mathematics and science topics. According to the program, the average applicant who won admissions to the SHP did better than 98 percent of a national sample of college freshman that took the same test in science and mathematics.

Zimpher met with Stony Brook University students January 15th to discuss initiatives that would help maximize the SUNY experience and that would further define students’ expectations. The dialogue gave students a platform to share their feedback with leading voices in higher education, including the New York State Senate’s Higher

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $10,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) Student Assistance Program.
