The Port Jefferson School District has received notice from Moody’s Investors Service that it has been assigned a rating of Aa2. The rating has been assigned to the district’s $3.8 million in School District Refunding Serial Bonds for 2016. It also affirms the district’s $4.9 million of outstanding general obligation parity debt. According to Moody’s, the Aa2 rating “reflects

the district’s moderatelysized wealthy tax base with significant taxpayer concentration, wellmanaged financial position with ample reserves and liquidity, and low debt profile.” “The Board of Education and administration have been diligent in their joint efforts to be fiscally responsible,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “We take great pride in our

financial stability and will continue to work to ensure that Port Jefferson remains a fiscally sound district.” Dr. Bossert noted: “The five-year period of budgetary stability and fiscal surpluses cited within the report coincide with the stewardship of the Assistant Superintendent for Business, Sean Leister. Long Island Teens to Perform

Suffolk County Community College’s Cheer Team placed third in the nation at the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships last weekend. The competition, the most prestigious college cheerleading championship in the country, was held at the Walt Disney World® Resort’s ESPN Wide World

of Sports Complex from January 15th to 17th. Suffolk was one of only two junior colleges competing among a total of 11 colleges and universities in the Open All-Girl Division. “Our goal was to make it into finals at our first ever UCA Nationals,” said Head Cheer & Dance Coach Gina Caputo. “Being ranked 3rd in the nation went beyond our expectations. Now to work towards next year and

bring home the title!” “We are very proud of the cheer team’s outstanding performance,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “The College community congratulates our student athletes for this tremendous accomplishment and the recognition they have earned for the team and our college.”

At this time of year, parents are registering their four-year-olds for kindergarten in the fall. They may be asking themselves “will my child be ready?” Answers to that question can be found in a one-page handout from the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. This free resource lists the top 20 skills that kindergarten teachers expect on the first day of school. It can be downloaded from the grant-funded program’s website: www.nassauboces. org/pre-k, and is available in Spanish, Urdu, Turkish, Chinese and HaitianCreole, as well as in English. “We surveyed more than 100 kindergarten teachers from 10 Long Island school districts,” says Lucinda Hurley, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives and administrator for

the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. “And there was clear agreement. What educators call ‘socialemotional skills’ are very important.” That means that kindergarteners should be able to share and take turns, express their feelings in words and participate in a conversation without interrupting, among other abilities. It is difficult for learning to take place when children have difficulty getting along with each other - or can’t sit still long enough to listen to a story being read. Also on the list: pre-reading skills; everyday skills, such as using the bathroom by themselves; and being able to identify numbers and colors. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative survey was conducted in the spring of 2015. The teachers came from the following 10 school districts: Amityville, Franklin

Square, Harborfields, Levittown, Long Beach, Middle Country, North Merrick, Valley Stream #13, Uniondale and Wyandanch. Some survey questions were based on an earlier survey of teachers in Westbury that was conducted by The Early Years Institute. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative is a grant-funded project that seeks to strengthen relationships between school districts and community-based organizations, and to share information about research, policy and best practices for early learning. Administered by Nassau BOCES, it is supported by expertise from The Early Years Institute and funds from the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations. Its partners are the Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES and the Child Care Councils of Nassau and Suffolk.

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for economic injury caused by the apartment building fire on April 10th. The deadline to apply for a working capital disaster loan is February 19th. “Businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans from the SBA are urged to do so before the February 19th deadline,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East. Low-interest disaster loans are available in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and

Washington in New York; Berkshire in Massachusetts and Bennington in Vermont. Working capital disaster loans up to $2 million are available at 4 percent for small businesses, and 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years. The loans are intended to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other expenses that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. To be considered for this assistance, eligible entities need to apply by the deadline. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba. gov/ela. Applications and program information are available by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1.800.659.2955

(1.800.877.8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing), or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@ sba.gov. Loan applications can also be downloaded from the SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. Tomorrow’s Hope Pope Francis summed up the Church’s commitment to education when he said, “Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young person…. This means that we have to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be…” Today, the “material and spiritual conditions” the Pope referred to are embodied in 47 beautiful elementary schools here on Long Island. Each school provides the safety and nurturing atmosphere that assures children they matter, that they are loved, and all of the schools strive to work with every student to help them achieve all they are capable of achieving. Yet some parents who desire the extraordinary results of a Catholic education still hesitate because of concerns about costs. Families who would like to consider a Catholic education are encouraged to visit a school during

Catholic Schools Week where they will discover that the Church and the schools are as interested in making their Catholic school dream come true as they are. On your visit, you will discover that tuition is actually quite reasonable and that there are multi-child discounts and other incentives to further reduce that cost. You will also discover that many Parishes and schools have scholarships and grants available to help offset the cost of tuition, and that there is a foundation on Long Island that raises money specifically to help families that desire a Catholic education but cannot afford it. That foundation is called the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation was established in September 2005 as a taxexempt, non-for-profit public charity with the purpose of ‘ensuring the excellence as well as the continuance of Catholic elementary schools on Long Island by increasing awareness and by providing scholarship and program funding for the needs of students and

schools. Business leader and philanthropist Lewis S. Ranieri was appointed by Bishop Murphy to chair the foundation. As chairman, Mr. Ranieri put together a prominent board of professionals, business leaders and diocesan administration with the goal of raising money from individual and corporate donors and providing tuition assistance for deserving families and students. Over the past ten years, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has served the Long Island community by providing parents with the opportunity to choose the education that best fits the needs of their children without the worry of financial constraint. With generous support from private and corporate donors, the Foundation has proudly served over 17,000 students, providing awards totaling nearly $20 million towards scholarships, and allowing them to attend one of Long Island’s 47 excellent Catholic elementary schools. Tuition assistance through Tomorrow’s Hope is available to all families

who show a financial need, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation. Not surprisingly, the applicants for Tomorrow’s Hope assistance are from a variety of different backgrounds that represent the diversity of our Island. The common thread is a desire for an education of the whole child, in mind, body and spirit. Tomorrow’s Hope supporters come from every walk of life, and they donate in a variety of ways; directly, where any amount large or small is appreciated, they donate through matching programs offered by their employers, and they bequeath portions of their estate to help fund Catholic education. The program that gets the most feedback, however, is the STAR Program. The Student Tuition Assistance Relationship (STAR) Program identifies students in high need of tuition assistance and matches them with a generous donor - a ‘STAR’ who contributes tuition assistance of $2,000 a year. Although tuition varies across the Diocese, this program is intended

to fund roughly half of the student’s tuition while the parent/guardian is asked to contribute the remainder. The STAR donor-student relationship is a special one it consists of correspondence between the student and the donor throughout the school year. This relationship is unique in that the donor can see first-hand how their generous contribution directly helps their STAR student to thrive in Catholic elementary school. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation orchestrates a number of charitable events during the course of each year including a Gala social event in the spring, a golf outing in the fall, and a holiday event around Christmas. This year, there will even be a new event, the St. Joseph 5K Fun Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, on March 19th. Building on the success of their inaugural event last March where over 350 runners participated, the St Joseph School in Garden City announced that this year’s race will benefit Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation. Running on a 5K circuit through the

flat, fast, tree-lined streets of Garden City, the race will be professionally chip timed and is USA Track and Field Certified. Appropriate for both serious runners, and for those who just want to come out and have some fun while supporting this worthwhile cause, the event will offer a post race festival with a DJ, face painting, refreshments and age category awards for the 5K. There will also be a 1-mile untimed fun run to allow every child to finish. Every child in the fun run will receive a prize. All ages and levels of fitness are welcome in this family friendly event. Learning Egyptian History Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from Brookhaven Learning Center @ Samoset Middle School, an inclusive special education program, enjoyed two weeks of learning about Egyptian history and culture with a discovery chest on loan from the Huntington Arts Council. Speech and Language Teacher Kim Leonard said, “The students explored various tools, artifacts, and replicas of ancient Egyptian objects while modeling

elaborate headdresses and jewelry reminiscent of the days when powerful pharaohs ruled the land.” Funding for the Egyptian objects was made possible by ESBOCES Arts-inEducation. Classroom teachers took turns using the chest to introduce stories and connect historical facts to present day current events. In art class, posters were created to showcase the historical clothing and designs of this colorful time in history.

The speech teachers reviewed vocabulary words and created stories using hieroglyphic stamps. Speech Teacher Renee Gretschel said, “We used Egyptian symbols when we created the stories to enhance the historical and cultural significance of the history lesson.” The event culminated with the students watching Engineering Egypt, a movie that described in detail how pyramids were built.

Kindergarten Registration The Andrew Muller Primary School (AMPS) in the Miller Place School District will be holding Kindergarten registration from Monday, March 14th, until Friday, March 18th, from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration is by appointment only. Ten Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students proved that they have what it takes to succeed in the National History Bee. After taking a 50-question qualifying exam in December, the

fourth- and fifth-graders learned that they each qualified to compete in the Online Regional Qualifying Exam for the National History Bee. The round will take place in late January. The Port Jefferson School District extends its

Fifth grade students from the Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently celebrated the completion of their holiday vacation reading of Hound Dog True, by Linda Urban, by having a conversation with the author over Skype. The book is about coping with the fear of meeting new people. Students had the chance to ask Ms. Urban questions about the book and its lessons. After speaking with the author, students

moved from classroom to classroom participating in activities such as making crafts, completing writing tasks, doing science experiments and playing games related to the book while making friends. For example, students learned about the anatomy of the human knee as reference to book character Uncle Potluck’s traitorous knee. A different station challenged students to write their own “Poor Moe” stories, a phrase used by the characters to mean “that really stinks” or “too

bad.” The students also created pajama buttons like those worn by the main character. To truly bring the story to life, all students arrived at school wearing their favorite pajamas, since the main character twisted the button of her favorite pajamas when she was nervous. The reading celebration aimed to help students grasp the lessons of the book and portray them in a way that is both fun and interactive.

Winners of the 13th annual photo contest at Jefferson’s Ferry were recognized recently at an awards reception attended by residents, family members and staff. The winning entries – which included photos of landscapes, people, animals and more – will be enlarged, framed and hung in the halls of Jefferson’s Ferry to be part of its living history. Approximately 250300 photos are submitted each year by 40 to 45 residents and a few staff members, some of whom are novices and others more experienced photographers. Contest judges are Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield, East

End Film and Digital Corp photographer Tony Lopez and Gallery North Executive Director Judith Levy. Linda Kolakowski, Vice President of Independent Living Operations at Jefferson’s Ferry, coordinated the program. This year the contest was dedicated in memory of Jefferson’s Ferry resident Kenneth Poli, a photographer and later an editor at Popular Photography magazine. While one of his photographs is among this year’s winners, he recently passed away. Mr. Poli and another resident, Jack Lancaster (who was a winner in 2011), were both 94 years of age in the years they won. Jefferson’s Ferry resident

and chair of the exhibit committee, Barbara Strongin, commented on the positive effect the photography contest has on the residents and staff. “Thirteen years of photos have not only added beauty to our facility, but have also told the story of our residents’ lives. The photos are both our history and our legacy.” “Our photo contest is extremely popular and every year we look forward to the many beautiful and creative entries from our residents and staff,” said Bob Caulfield. “Some photos are reflective of places travelled, others of family members ... they all tell a story in their own unique way.”

The toiletries were donated by Jefferson’s Ferry staff and residents alike through a box in the community center. At the end of a week, there were enough donations to fill the gift bags with toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lip balm, shampoo and conditioner, hand cream, combs and hand sanitizer. Some donations also included toys, socks, hats and mittens for the children that attend the

dinners. Looking ahead to next year, Jefferson’s Ferry would like to donate a Christmas tree as well. “Jefferson’s Ferry takes its role as a member of the Three Village community to heart and helping to feed our hungry neighbors and bring them some measure of joy are among the many ways we can contribute,” said Bob Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “The actions of our volunteers exemplified the true meaning of the season. While they gave, they received so much more!”

The construction of the backboard and hoop was standard; every team received the same material: plywood, dowels, white pine, and wire. The mechanism had to consist of adapted technology, such as a spoon, a spring, rubber bands, clothes pegs, or anything creative. The students also learned to use hand tools to build their designs.” There was collaboration with the science, math, and language arts teachers so the special education students could fully understand concepts such as force, energy, tension, compression, potential energy, kinetic energy, measurement, graphing, and speed. Each catapult design was different but incorporated propulsion devices, levers, and torque, or ramps. This was a fun and exciting activity for the students. Six teams “faced off” in the cafeteria. The criterion was for the device to get ten out of ten baskets. Four teams were eliminated. Rowan H., a student from Sachem CSD on the

Mad Scientists team, and Luke C., a student from West Islip on the Assassins team, went head-to-head. Luke won the Champion of Champions of the Basketball Board Game Competition. He attributes his win to using a pendulum gauge design. Assistant Principal Kenneth McCloud said, “The students explored creativity, demonstrated application, and displayed pride and satisfaction, and good sportsmanship at the Champion of Champions Tournament. The project supports the New York State Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential (CDOS). Students can apply the skills they are learning in careers and prepare them for post-school employment.”

Kickoff Event The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point

headquarters. Dozens and dozens of community residents and participants from previous years gathered to brainstorm and collect registration materials

for this year’s Helen’s Run/Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at the Sands Point Preserve. Words of inspiration were provided by HKNC Assistant

Program Coordinator Maricar Marquez, followed by insights on getting healthy and motivated from nutritional health counselor and Sands Point resident Sara Siskind.

HKNC Executive Director Susan Ruzenski and HKNC Development Officer Marina Carroll also thanked everyone for lending their support to make this year’s
