We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. On Sunday, January 12th, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Matthew Nosenchuk and Joseph Papile from Troop 354 in Port Jefferson Station. The ceremony was held at VFW Post 4927 Hall in Centereach. Matthew’s Eagle Project involved building five
garbage can receptacles for the North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce. These were placed on the corner of Route 112 and Route 347 in Port Jefferson Station near the familiar train caboose. Matthew was concerned that visitors to the Chamber of Commerce Park did not have a means of disposing their garbage and the receptacles will
help keep the park clean. Joseph’s Eagle Project benefited St. Gerard Mejella R. C. Church In Port Jefferson Station. Joseph cleared an overgrown path that extended from the church’s parking lot to the baseball fields. The path was cleared and fencing was installed at the entrance with a sign to make the trail more visible.

Three Village Central School District’s Arrowhead Elementary School sixth-graders took an up-close look at a natural phenomenon during a recent hands-on science project. Working in small groups, the students studied
tornados and then used their research to create six-foot tall paper replicas of the weather affect. They included a number of important facts on the paper creations, including where tornado alley is located, how tornados form and what time of year
they form most frequently. The completed projects, which will be on display in the sixth-grade wing until the end of January, were then assessed based on the students’ creativity, accuracy, use of grammar and how well the team worked together.
Fire Meets Ice Students at Andrew Muller Primary School in Miller Place School District had some sizzling excitement as Mad Science presented an assembly called Fire and Ice. Students witnessed and
learned about the amazing properties of fire. Then, the show cooled off with a spectacular demonstration involving dry ice. During the presentation students also experienced how inhaling CO2 will make

For the third year in a row, Port Jefferson Middle School eighthgrader Aaron Held has won his school’s National Geographic Geography Bee. Held took first place after spending his recess period competing against
over 30 of his fellow students during the week of January 9th. He placed just ahead of sixth-graders Ben Perez-Flesler, Teppei Fukuto, Olivia Ross and Amy Whitman. Held now has the opportunity to qualify for the state geography bee by
taking a regional online qualifying test. The results of that exam will be made available in early March. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to Held and wishes him continued success in the competition.

Ward Melville High School students in the Three Village Central School District enrolled in the building’s gourmet foods elective recently showcased their creativity by designing and baking exquisite cakes for the class’ “Cake Wars”

of the south wing of the school. The renovation incorporated extensive improvements for instructional technology, so that the new home of the department can truly be a resource for all parish, regional, and diocesan schools as they work to enhancing the values-

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
