Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.’ During Catholic Schools Week, schools across the Diocese, and across the country, mark the occasion with Masses and special entertainment and activities for the students, families, parishioners and members of their extended communities. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and the school’s contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation
How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new
families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well. Catholic schools are unique in many significant ways, and Catholic Schools Week highlights many of those differences. First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school. Catholic Schools Week is the best opportunity for families who might be considering the benefits of a Catholic education
to experience first-hand the commitment to academic excellence and faith formation in your local school. Prospective families tour the facilities, are introduced to the innovative reading and math programs that accelerate academic achievement, and they get to see how the safe, loving, supportive and orderly environment in a Catholic school makes it the perfect environment to support learning. As many of the touring parents have said, the best part of the visit during Catholic Schools Week is being able to see and feel the difference that a value-centered education can make for every child. This is frequently reinforced by the contact prospective families have with the 7th and 8th grade students, most often as tour guides. When you see the confident, caring and courteous individuals these young men and women have become, you begin to really understand the Catholic school difference. The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes
a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Continued From 3 project aligns with our commitment to protecting the local raptor population.” Van Cott’s raptor rehabilitation project will educate the community about the importance of rehabilitating and releasing injured birds back into the wild. Her work will include repairing the prey enclosure inside the raptor enclosure at Sweetbriar Nature Center. The enclosure helps the raptors relearn how to hunt for food. In addition, educational pieces will be created to instruct younger Girl Scout troops about raptors and the importance of bird rehabilitation. “I am humbled and very thankful to be recognized by PSEG Long Island for my Girl Scout Gold Award project at Sweetbriar
Nature Center,” said Van Cott. “The generous donation will enable me to improve upon the final aspects of rehabilitating the prey enclosure within the Flight Aviary. I have enjoyed working on this project to help ensure that the raptors can be rehabilitated and released into the wild.” The Girl Scout Gold Award is presented to seniors and ambassadors who tackle issues that are important to them and drive lasting change in the community. The Gold Award is for the elite few that strive to take “make the world a better place” to the next level. A Gold Award Girl Scout’s achievements prime her for the fast track when it comes to college admissions, and make her an outstanding candidate for academic scholarships and other financial awards.

All-State Honors For Port Jefferson Football Duo
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors Sam Florio and Aidan Kaminska received AllState football honors from the New York State Sportswriters Association. Aidan received second team All-State honors and Sam received AllState honorable mention honors. Sam had 841 yards passing, 601 yards rushing
and 20 touchdowns for the Royals this season. Aidan recorded a school record with 62 receptions for 1,078 yards and 14 touchdowns. Aidan is also second in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s record books for 17 single game receptions which he set in a game against Mount Sinai this season. “These are two of the
most dynamic players to ever come through Port Jefferson football,” coach Andrew Cosci said. “Sam is a two-time AllCounty player and plans to continue his football career in college next year. Aidan is going on to play lacrosse at UMASS Amherst. Both athletes have been important players for this program and will be hard to replace.”

Spreading Holiday Cheer The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education’s December meeting was filled with the sounds of the season as studentmusicians performed several holiday classics before being recognized for their contributions to the school and community during the holiday season. Dr. Michael Caravello, director of music and
fine arts, introduced music teachers Mr. Jeff Trelewicz and Mr. Edward Pisano. He also included the student-musicians for their participation in community events such as the Port Jefferson Village’s annual Dicken’s Festival, performing at local churches and the public library, local businesses as well as the winter concert at the
high school. The students were each presented with a certificate of appreciation for their musical efforts. Dr. Caravello then took a moment for special recognition of students Jack Reilly and Peggy Yin, who participated in the New York State School Music Association All-State Winter Conference recently held in Rochester.

Two Rocky Point School District staff members who both retired at the end of 2019 were honored for more than 40 years of collective service to the students of the district at a recent board of education meeting. Linda Tobiassen, a
teacher aide at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School, was lauded by Principal Dr. Virginia Gibbons as integral to the success of students at the school in her role as coach, friend, cheerleader and someone they regularly looked up to
for her kindness. Michela McLoughlin, who served as an assistant in the main office at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School, was cited for her daily administrative support and sense of humor by JAE Principal Linda Murphy.
Independence And Motivation Students in Edna Louise Spear Elementary School are learning to be independent, capable and motivated as members of the school’s after-school Homework Club. The neutral space in the school’s library provides students in grades 3-5 a quiet place to complete their homework assignments as independently as possible and share in the
camaraderie of their peers. According to fifth grade teacher Kari Costanzo, who oversees the club, many of the 25-30 students who regularly attend the two-day-per-week club are so self-motivated that they are able to work diligently on their homework. As she noticed them completing their assignments efficiently and in a timely manner, Costanzo
introduced flash cards to the students to further develop their math skills when they finish their required assignments. “They love it,” she said of the Homework Club, another way that students are practicing what they are learning in the classroom, retaining information and fortifying a new skill in their minds.

RUNNING MILES, CREATING MEMORIES - Setauket Elementary School third through sixth grade students ran hundreds of miles this fall as part of their participation in the school’s running club. Seventy-two students took part in the initiative and met from October through December on Thursdays after school to run for 60 minutes each session. Recording their progress along the way, many students ran three or more miles each session, and each club member ran enough miles to cumulatively count as a full marathon.
