School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!” All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college. It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of
the youth on Long Island. Admission is a suggested donation of $30. Those who cannot attend may send their donation by check to SBPLI, Attn: Joani Madarash, PO Box 101, Kings Park, NY 11754. Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our
preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only
rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared
experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program.
After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 27-29 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past fifteen years. “This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.” During the 2014 season, 49 teams from Long Island, New York City, the surrounding area and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional FRC on March 27-29, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. “The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Madarash. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.” For more information, visit http://www.sbpli.org.

Partnerships Make Catholic Education Work
Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high Schools upon graduation, and 99% of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration and cooperation is not an accident, however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from Nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education. The ‘continuum
effort’ manifests itself in a variety of ways that benefit students directly, help faculty members grow their skills, and help the schools groom their next generation of skilled administrators. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on initiatives to advance Catholic education. St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years, with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000, based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many of our
students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education. The relationship with St John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and onsite at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices. The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future

The Bond Of Brotherly Lover I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong. My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration. For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family. My little brother is the reason why I strive for
greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness. My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine. There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in
us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Talent Search Semifinalist The Port Jefferson School District is proud to announce that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Kent Ueno has been named a semifinalist in the 2014 Intel Science Talent Search competition. Kent, whose project focuses on the design and synthesis of tumortargeting drug conjugates for imaging studies, is one of 300 semifinalists nationwide, 50 of whom are from Long Island. Kent’s journey to success began with the Stony Brook University 2013 Simons Summer Research Program, in which he participated for six weeks. The program, offered to high school students between their junior and senior years, provides participants with the opportunity to engage in hands-on research in science, math or engineering. Students work with faculty mentors at a research university and learn about laboratory techniques and tools while becoming part of active research teams. “The district could nominate a maximum of three students for the Simons Research Program,” said Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy. “With his outstanding academics and potential, Kent was a clear choice.” Shortly after his acceptance into the program, Kent met Stony Brook University Professor Dr. Iwao Ojima and began weeks of reading scientific articles, taking notes, performing background research and completing safety courses. Throughout this time, Kent also shadowed Stony Brook University graduate student Tao Wang who acted as a mentor, helping Kent become familiar with the laboratory setting to prepare him for hands-on involvement in experiments during the final few weeks
of the program. “My involvement with the project focused on the distribution and localization of biotin-bearing drug conjugates, which have not yet been defined,” said Kent. “Therefore, the aim of this research was to design and develop novel tumor-targeting drug conjugates with an imaging arm to track the distribution and localization of the conjugates.” Together, the team designed two novel tumor-targeting drug conjugates bearing biotin as the
tumor-targeting moiety, a second-generation taxoid, SB-T-1214, as a highly potent anticancer drug, and two different imaging arms for PET and SPECT scans. Kent submitted his summer’s work to the 2014 Intel Science Talent Search, a program of the Society for Science & the Public. Sponsored by the Intel Corporation, it is the nation’s most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors. Submissions are reviewed by three or more Ph.D.
scientists, mathematicians or engineers in the subject area of the entry, with heavy importance placed on the research report. Judges also look for students who exhibit exceptional research skills, innovative thinking and a commitment to academics and the community. “The Simons program and the Intel competition have both strengthened my interest in the field,” said Kent. “My participation in the Advanced Placement chemistry and biology courses at Earl L. Vandermeulen have provided me with a crucial foundation needed for this type of research.” Kent also credits his success to the support he has received from his science teacher Michel Krivosta and Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy, both of whom assisted Kent in his application and acceptance into both initiatives. As a semifinalist, Kent will be awarded $1,000 with an additional $1,000 going to Earl L. Vandermeulen High School to support its STEM education program. “This whole experience has been a tremendous learning process that has had a very large impact on my life,” said Kent. “It is so fulfilling to be able to apply what I have learned to something that may one day help people with cancer.” Kent’s scientific aspirations extend beyond the Intel program, as he hopes to continue participating in research programs throughout his time in college. While still awaiting his college acceptance letters, Kent already knows that he would like to study neurology and nuclear physics, both of which have applications in cancer research. On January 22nd, Intel will name the 40 finalists who will be advancing to the competition in Washington, D.C. this March.

Flowering Trees For Arbor Day Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two
Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “These trees are perfect
for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and May 31st, with enclosed

They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean... Silently inhaling the wonders of nature, they slowly continue their journey along the water’s edge, their bare feet tickled by the chill of the surf randomly dancing along the shore.
Words used in everyday language to those that are more antiquated proved to be no match for the talented students at W.S. Mount Elementary School and R.C. Murphy Junior High School when they participated in their schools’ annual spelling bees this winter. At W.S. Mount, fourththrough sixth-grade students competed in the schoolwide bee before an audience of peers, parents and teachers. The 27 contestants represented
the winners of each classroom spelling bee and volleyed for first place during the school bee’s 13 challenging rounds. Sixth-grader Yaseen Jalili was named this year’s spelling champ and will now compete in the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University. This year’s runner up was sixth-grader Almila Gursoy, and fourth-grader Daphna Fineberg came in third place. After winning their classroom bees, R.C.
Murphy seventh- and eighth-grade students competed in this year’s schoolwide contest. The bee ran for an impressive 17 rounds and ended with seventh-grader Maddy Avni’s correct spelling of “spontaneous.” As the school winner, Maddy will now compete against other school winners at the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee. Eighth-graders Jacob Cohen and Julia Hu took second and third place, MURPHY CHAMP - R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-grader Maddy Avni respectively. was named this year’s school spelling bee champ, and eighth-grader Jacob Cohen came in second.
