Baking Fundraiser As part of character education and math lessons, students in Nancy Winkler-Brogan’s thirdgrade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School baked bread for those in need. Using skills learned from a Common Core Math Module titled, “Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure,” students

were able to translate their skills into the real world by measuring ingredients to make 21 loaves of bread. The bread was then delivered by high school staff member Gene Holland to Gracecare Outreach of Medford. Holland has volunteered at the Outreach Center for the past 13 years and was grateful for the donation.

Art Against Bullying

“The bread fed a lot of people and for some, it was their one and only gift this year,” said Mr. Holland. “During this activity, the students learned many things, but most importantly, how important it is to take the time to help others in need,” said WinklerBrogan.

A Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School (LADSBS) student, MariRose Holmes, recently won third place in the “Imagine That! Anti-Bully Art Contest” hosted by Imagine Art, an artist organization in Amagansett.

Students across Long Island, and over 20 LADSBS students in the grades 3-6 category, made “Anti-Bullying” posters to portray how they prevent bullying in their school. The contest aims to remind young students that they should strive to prevent

bullying every day. Mari-Rose won two tickets to Jackson Pollock’s Drip Painting gallery, an art supply set and she will have her artwork published in the Imagine That! Facebook art gallery.

The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Rocky Point High School wresting standout Tommy Dutton added a new title to his already impressive athletic career this winter – the most number of career varsity wins on all of Long Island. Tommy shattered the previous record of 227 – ironically held by his

brother Steven – during the Union Endicott New York State Dual Meet Championship held this January. During the prestigious meet, Tommy and the rest of the Eagles competed against the top teams in the state, before finishing an impressive fourth.

Creative Problem Solving At Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, the after-school Art Club is not only a place where fifth-graders can express their talents, but it is also is a place where students can use their problem-solving skills to

create “artistic solutions.” Recently, Art Club Advisor Mr. Richard Anderson tasked students to create two projects – a functional light sculpture from papiermâché and decorative, clay birdhouses. The students

were required to use their problem-solving skills to creatively construct the projects. The students’ finished sculptures and birdhouses were testament to the problem-solving skills that they have acquired.
