Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Suffolk County Police Department’s 7th Precinct and the local community in collecting new and unwrapped toys for a Holiday Toy-Drive. Donation boxes were distributed throughout the community, including to Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker’s office in Mount Sinai. All donations were brought to the Suffolk County Police Department 7th Precinct’s headquarters for distribution. “I want to thank the 7th Precinct for organizing this Holiday Toy-Drive in our community,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Many families have been impacted by the effects
of the pandemic, so it was important to us to come together to spread some holiday cheer to the children and families in our local community.” “The Holiday Toy-Drive is the 7th Precinct’s way of giving back to the community in a time of need,” said 7th Precinct Community Liaison Officer Frank Raspanti. “All of the donations were given to families right here in the 6th and 7th Precincts’ district. We are grateful to our local government, schools and community for helping us to give local families a nice holiday. ” The 7th Precinct’s Holiday Toy-Drive began in early December, 2020. With the help of the
local community, the department was able to collect over 1,000 toys to distribute to families in need in the district. Donated toys were appropriate for a range of different ages. The department collaborated with 33 schools in the district and, with the help of the schools’ guidance counselors and social workers, distributed toys and gift cards to the families most in need. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS), announced Talha Shaikh, MD, MBA, has been named chief radiation oncologist. Dr. Shaikh will lead the department with new radiation oncology initiatives and developments of clinical strategies and best practices to advance cutting-edge radiation therapies. He will oversee the radiation oncology facilities across the New York region while continuing to provide high-quality care to patients. As cancer care continues to advance, Dr.Shaikh understands the need to evolve with technology. “My mission is to bring world-class cancer care to patients close to their homes,” said Dr. Shaikh. “ NYCBS has been at the forefront of providing superb care for patients throughout the New York area. We have a team of exceptional providers and I am excited to work closely with them as we continue to develop the radiation oncology practice.” Board-certified in radiation oncology, Dr. Shaikh graduated from Drexel University College

Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-
haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those
who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is
revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.
To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education. Recognizing a need to develop a program
specifically for patients who are dealing with the aftereffects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Oakcrest Ave in Middle Island, has joined with the American Lung Association (ALA) to form a Better Breathers Club at the facility which offers an opportunity for cardiopulmonary disease patients to connect virtually, via ZOOM, with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive

The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants. “With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of wellbeing for those living with chronic lung disease,”

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and
furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. If you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!” I personally would like to thank both nonprofit organizations for making a difference on our island, touching the hearts of those in need and having a smile on your faces while doing so! “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

Photo courtesy of Northwell Health Ford Hospital in Detroit and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township. “By promoting collaboration and forward planning, this alliance supercharges the ability of participating health systems to respond quickly and effectively to any crisis,” said Joseph Moscola, PA, senior vice president and Northwell’s chief people officer. “It implements and institutionalizes the lessons Northwell learned this spring in treating more COVID-19 patients than any other health system in the country, which is particularly important now as case counts climb in nearly every state.” Northwell and Henry Ford were both recipients of aid in the form of staff-sharing by other organizations during the spring surge of COVID-19. During the summer, as caseloads threatened to rise in Utah, Northwell provided critical care nurses to a hospital there. The current round of staffsharing between Northwell and Henry Ford is the first to occur under the alliance and is particularly significant because the ongoing onslaught of COVID-19 is affecting almost every state, making it more difficult for hard-hit hospitals to
find temporary staff from agencies or other health care institutions. The alliance, which may expand in the future to include other health care institutions around the country, provides an important relief valve for participating organizations and demonstrates shared values and the ability to collaborate in crisis in order to put patients first. “There is no doubt that nearly ten months into this pandemic, our nurses are not only combatting the virus but the fatigue that comes with the daily stress of keeping our COVID-19 patients alive and helping them recover,” said Robert G. Riney, president, healthcare operations, and chief operating officer, Henry Ford Health System. “Not only will this provide some welcome relief for our nurses, but it is also a tremendous morale boost to have your colleagues from another hard-hit region support you in this way. “Everyone here at Henry Ford is grateful for the selflessness and generosity of spirit of these highly trained nurses from Northwell Health. We stand ready to provide the same support to them should the need arise,” said Riney.

Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health system, has sent 12 nurses to Michigan-based Henry Ford Health System to help clinicians there care for a rising number of patients suffering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The staff sharing is occurring as part of a newly formed strategic alliance between the health systems, created to strengthen their ability to fight the new coronavirus and more effectively support the health and well-being of their communities. The alliance is designed to enhance crisis preparedness through collaborative emergency and COVID-19 planning and the sharing of best practices. It enables participating organizations to swiftly increase staffing capacity through temporary staff sharing – institutional requirements are worked through ahead of time to allow faster onboarding and reduce time-to-bedside for reinforcements. In the current exchange, which comes in answer to a call for assistance from the 30,000-employee Henry Ford Health System, Northwell’s intensive care and medical-surgical nurses are providing hands-on care at Henry
