It acknowledges the demonstration of outstanding leadership, advocacy and collaboration in promoting equity and access for all students to rigorous educational opportunities. “As someone who began her career as a school counselor, your support and understanding of the profession as superintendent
of schools deserves recognition,” noted Dr. Barbara Donnellan, NYSSCA President in her congratulatory letter. “Your advocacy for students, facilitation of difficult situations and careful attention to the recent revision of your district school counseling program all contributed to your selection for this recognition.” In her nomination letter, Bergson highlights Pedisich’s caring and detailed approach to education. “Ms. Pedisich’s style of leadership has always been one of collaboration and respect for others,” the
letter reads. “She is always a professional, a wonderful listener and if she asks you to do something she will always offer to help you accomplish it.” Bergson goes on to explain Pedisich’s role in the lengthy process to update the district’s guidance plan and overhaul the grading policy from an alphabetical to numerical system. “We realized how fortunate we are to have a truly outstanding educational leader and it is really wonderful when an outside group affirms our view of the superintendent and the outstanding leadership that she is
providing,” Board of Education President William F. Connors, Jr. added. “Tonight is very special for a number of reasons – not only for this wonderful and most appreciated honor – but because it is coming from an organization that represents my origins as an educator,” said Pedisich. “When I reflect back on my career I have to say, without a doubt, that those first years were the most intrinsically rewarding for me; they meant a great deal to me. Those years, set in motion a career in education in a place I have come to value, respect and now view as a family.
I would not be in this position or the educator I am, if not for this place and the people with whom I have worked.” Pedisich began her career in the district in September 1984 as a school guidance counselor. Throughout her tenure in Three Village, she has served as a chairperson of the Ward Melville High School guidance department, as well as executive and assistant director of pupil personal services before becoming an assistant superintendent and ultimately the superintendent of the district.

and two teams from Murphy represented Three Village during the 23rd annual event and competed in two rounds as individuals and one round as a team. All four teams consisted of eighthand ninth-grade students and were challenged to answer an array of math questions, which increased in difficulty to include material from such programs as algebra II and
minor trigonometry. As a team, Murphy students Reilly Browne, Kelsey Ge, Daniel Ma, Daniel Schwartz and Albert Tian placed fourth and Eric Chiu, Keene Lu, Priya Mukhi, Darren Tung and Cliffton Woo placed fifth. Gelinas students Matthew Fiorella, William Sun, Ben Templeton, Alice Yang and Grant Yu placed second. Individually, Three Village swept the top four positions, with Daniel
Ma placing fourth, Ben Templeton placing third, Keene Lu placing second and Grant Yu taking the top spot. Fellow students Jessica Guo, Morgan Persky, Ryan Qin, Neil Shady and Rebecca Zhang also took part in the contest. To prepare, the students studied material from previous competitions and participated in dedicated review sessions.

Spellers Advance Three Village students showcased their linguistic skills this winter by participating in school spelling bees at R.C. Murphy Junior High School, Setauket and W.S. Mount Elementary Schools. After winning their classroom bees, the students competed in the school-wide contests.
Each contestant took turns spelling some of the hardest words found in the dictionary as they battled for several rounds for the chance to earn the top speller title. Jonathan Huang was named the winner at Murphy with the word molasses; Ryan Himmelsbach was named the winner at Setauket
with the word secession, and Daphna Fineberg was named the winner at Mount with the word migraine. The school spelling champs will now compete in the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee. P.J. Gelinas Junior High School will host a school bee at the end of January.
Raising Funds to Adopt Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Environmental Club members have reached their goal to ‘adopt’ two chimpanzees through various fundraising projects. Over the holiday break, club members adopted chimps Thabu and Zac, who reside at the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa Chimpanzee
Sanctuary. “The students were determined to adopt the chimps by the holidays,” said club advisor Dawn DeLeonardis-Moody. “This is a cause near and dear to them, especially our Club President Arunima Roy who is a Roots & Shoots National Youth Leader.” To raise the $100 needed to adopt the animals, club members sold reusable
water bottles, held healthy bake sales and plant sales. Additionally, the students hosted an Optimum Charity Challenge where participants learned how to make repurposed arts and crafts. With the adoption, the students will receive periodic updates on the chimps’ wellbeing.

Morning Greeters As part of its character education program, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School has introduced a new initiative, called Morning Greeters. Each day, coordinating teachers Carleen Parmegiani and Doreen Marullo select four
students to serve as the following day’s Morning Greeters. These individuals are then encouraged to welcome fellow students as they enter the school by simply saying, “Good Morning.” The program is aimed at sparking added friendliness within the

school’s walls. “Since we started the program, we have noticed that more people are saying good morning and starting off their day in a friendly manner,” said Ms. Parmegiani.
Rocky Point Middle School sixth-graders are working on cutting edge, groundbreaking scientific research through the school’s GATES program. As part of a DNA extraction and analysis procedure, the students are studying the DNA sequence of a specific gene of the Allegheny ants located in the Rocky Point Pine Barrens behind the school. With the help of Dr. Aleida Perez and Amanda Horn from Brookhaven National
Labs (BNL), students are looking for bacterial DNA, which may be associated with the ants. Working in groups, the students collected ant samples and extracted their DNA after they were frozen by BNL. They then worked to complete a Polymerase Chain Reaction, which amplifies the DNA to create additional strands. After completing a gel electrophoresis, the students will analyze the samples and make note of
the results. This year’s GATES students are following in the footsteps of the GATES students from last year, who first looked at the ants’ DNA and submitted data to a national “gene bank.” This year’s students will once again submit their data to the scientific community and present their project at BNL’s Open Space Stewardship Celebration in June.

Board of Ed Recognition The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized three individuals during its meeting on January 12th. Among those honored were eighth-grader Lucas Rohman, special education teacher Monica Consalvo and Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Principal Thomas Meehan. Each individual was presented with a certificate of recognition, starting with Rohman. The middle school student was honored for being named one of John Hopkins University’s Brightest
Young Students in the World. As an awardee, Rohman qualified to attend a Center for Talented Youth residential summer program and participate in online classes and several family programs. Consalvo was acknowledged for her work ethic, initiative and dedication. Prior to being presented with a certificate of recognition, Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Dr. Robert Neidig said, “It is clear that Ms. Consalvo loves what she does and makes everyone
around her better, including myself.” Aside from attending many school activities outside the school day, Dr. Neidig noted that Ms. Consalvo frequently goes above and beyond her duties to forward the mission of the school district. Mr. Meehan was commended for being named a 2015 Person of the Year by the Port Times Record. In celebration, he was presented a plaque that will be hung in the 12 DAYS OF KINDNESS - To inspire kindness within their school, second graders elementary school. in Carleen Parmegiani class participated in a 12 Days of Kindness initiative. Mixing Kindness selfless behavior and helped someone in need with no expectation of material return. They demonstrate the sense of spirit the District aims to achieve throughout its school community and are role models for others. This year’s awardees include students Serena Mangino, Hallie Benson, Emily Hampson, Emily Lambert, Wayne Wesemann and Nicole Volovar. To receive the OAR award, students must distinguish themselves as academic inspirations
and have efficiently risen to the educational challenges presented to them. The students either met long-term goals or are students who have exhibited commendable improvement. Recipients include Jake MacMonigle, Ricky Abreu, Emily Bruno, Wayne Wesemann and Anthony Santangelo. Miller Place High School student Wayne Wesemann received both awards for understanding the meaning of hard work.
Gnome Bridges Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School first-graders worked as engineers as they completed a gnome bridge designing and building project with the help of teacher Jennifer Meschi. After reading a short about a village of gnomes who were in need of a
bridge to cross on the walk home from work, the students collaborated in small groups to design the bridge and figure out which materials were needed to build the bridge. For added challenge, students were tasked with creating a bridge that held the weight of four gnomes
and one wheelbarrow, which equated to the weight of three crayons. The crayons needed to be able to roll over the bridge and the bridge was required to have guardrails The project was directly connected to the grade level’s Next Generation Science Standards.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Three customer service calls. Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution. Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online. No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment. Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later. Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my
now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue. And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred. The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to
contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it? As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online. Ever. Again.
