Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet

boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas

morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. After arriving at the NYSSMA conference, Brenna had three full days of rehearsal, singing as much as eight hours in a day during rehearsals with a college-level conductor and 160 other singers from all over the state. When asked how rehearsals were going, Brenna expressed how incredibly inspiring it was to sing with that many voices. “As her chorus teacher, I feel incredibly privileged to have Brenna as a student because she is such a humble leader in the Rocky Point Chorus Room,” Ms. Spitz said. “She will do anything and everything to support other singers in the chorus and is more eager to shine the spotlight

on her peers than to have it on herself. She is always looking to improve and tries any suggestion given in class or in lessons with full enthusiasm.” Craig Knapp and Amy Schecher, Rocky Point music department chairpersons, added that they are both very proud of Brenna and her accomplishments. “She is an extremely hard worker and is a very dedicated member of the High School Chorus,” Mr. Knapp said. “Brenna is an outstanding representative of our music department.” In addition to Brenna participating in the NYSSMA All-State Mixed Chorus, Mr. Knapp copresented a professional development workshop at the NYSSMA conference, “Super Strategies to Address the Standards in Classroom Music.”

Rocky Point High School student Brenna Kiernan was selected to the New York State School Music Association All-State Mixed Chorus. She participated in a concert held at the acclaimed Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, during the annual Winter Conference of the New York State School Music Association on Dec. 4. Brenna auditioned for the All-State Mixed Chorus last spring by submitting a video recording of her singing the Italian aria “Che faro senza Euridice” at the NYSSMA Solo Festival. She received a perfect score as well as glowing comments from the adjudicator. The All-State Mixed Chorus was announced in the fall, and Brenna received the music to start preparing in November. Four students from the Rocky Point School District were among the few dozen local students recognized for their participation in the Brookhaven Town Polar Plunge as part of Team ExtraOrdinary. Rocky Point High School sophomores Ava Dantuono and Ashly Malandrino and seniors Christian Dantuono and Max Marte helped Team ExtraOrdinary raise $13,000 for Special Olympics by getting sponsored to jump in the Long Island Sound in late

November. Team ExtraOrdinary started in 2013 when Robert Fitton started plunging with his cousin and one friend in honor of his brother who was born with Down syndrome, and from there, year after year, he has added friends to join the team. His sister, Mary, joined as a co-captain when she was old enough to plunge. The team is composed entirely of young people, and since inception, they have raised over $100,000 that has

benefited over 250 Special Olympians and has grown on a yearly basis. The group was honored by the Town of Brookhaven, led by Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who is from Rocky Point, and Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, who recognized the outstanding efforts of the team and proclaimed Nov. 20 as Team “ExtraOrdinary” Day in the Town of Brookhaven.

Ward Melville DECA Achieves At Regional Competition Ward Melville High School’s DECA club competed in this year’s regional contest and defended their long reputation of excellence. Q: At what age would you suggest starting the habit of annual exams? A: My suggestion is to start at any age. No matter your phase of life, you and your physician can work together to prepare for any challenges. Our bodies are constantly changing and being affected by our choices. It is important that we move away from looking at our health as a dichotomy between feeling sick and feeling well.

Q: Why are annual exams so important? A: An annual exam is an opportunity to identify and address health issues and develop a personalized roadmap for the year ahead. From setting exercise and weight loss goals to practicing healthy forms of stress management, your doctor can work to develop a plan that will allow you to live a healthy life. Eating a large meal can put an extra load on your heart. · Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. When possible, simply push the snow. · Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1. · Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling. Alcohol may increase a person’s sensation of warmth and may cause them to underestimate the extra strain their body is under in the cold. · Consult a doctor. If you have a medical condition,

don’t exercise on a regular basis or are middle aged or older, meet with your doctor prior to the first anticipated snowfall. · Be aware of the dangers of hypothermia. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. To prevent hypothermia, dress in layers of warm clothing, which traps air between layers forming a protective insulation. Wear a hat because much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head. Heart Attack Warning Signs Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where it is clear what’s happening. But most heart

attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: · Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. · Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. · Shortness of breath

with or without chest discomfort. · Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness · As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Call 9-1-1 emergency medical services (EMS) for rapid transport to the emergency room and treatment when they arrive on the scene. Don’t drive yourself--have someone

drive you to the hospital right away. Heart attacks can cause sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart stops beating, or beats irregularly, failing to pump enough blood. If a victim is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, quick recognition and fast action are the keys to saving a life. What You Can Do Bystanders can help cardiac arrest victims survive, if they act fast. First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away. Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Hands Only CPR is effective in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive” (100 beats per minute) until help arrives. The American Heart Association says that for most people, shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems. However, the association warns that the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some, as the combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energysaving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic

devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. · Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. · Install a high efficiency air source heat pump

(ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems.
