So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

Through read alouds and silent reading, students took notes of clues that would help them solve the problem and worked to put the pieces of the puzzle together before the detectives in the story did. As an added sense of

fun, throughout the study and during the day, the teachers created different clues for various classroom activities. The students eagerly worked to solve these clues using the strategies they had learned in the reading and writing unit. Later in the year, the students will utilize their new skills as they begin to explore fiction books.

President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

Comic Contest Winner famous Big Nate comics. Evan’s piece showed a comical encounter between a young boy and a bear who just awoke from hibernation. Evan describes himself as a comic enthusiast, having penned hundreds of original strips in his life. “Making comics is a fun thing to do and helps to relive stress,” said Evan.

Lesson Launched Rocky Point High School students in Janece Guerra’s Algebra II classes recently learned about parabolic arcs in a very visual and hands on way. The students were challenged to build an army man launcher using their original design in a 20-minute time frame

and only using a select number of simple supplies. These included a paper cup, one spoon, two feet of string, two feet of tape, two rubber bands, six popsicle sticks and an army man to launch. Once completed, the students tested their creations to see which one

would launch the plastic man the furthest. This exercise was designed to model parabolic arcs, as the pathway of the launched army man was in the shape of a parabolic arc. The farthest army man launched went over 15 yards!

Reading Companions Wearing her bright red Therapy Dogs International bandana, eight-year-old Stella listened attentively as students at Charles E. Walters Elementary School quietly read their favorite books. Stella and her owner Karen Meier are part of Therapy Dogs International, a volunteer group organized to provide qualified handlers and their therapy dogs for visitation to institutions, facilities, and schools. As part of the school’s Reward Committee “Read to our Dog” program, students were able to earn Charles E. Change coins to

purchase a coupon good for 10-minutes of reading time to Stella. Coins are distributed to students as part of the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) where students are reinforced for showing examples of Respect, Integrity, Good Behavior, Helping Others, Teamwork (R.I.G.H.T). “Stella is an ideal reading companion because she is such an attentive listener and has such a calming, gentle demeanor,” said Charles E. Walters Elementary School Library Media Specialist Diane Hall. “Reading aloud to

Stella builds the student’s confidence. They also learn the value of saving up for something as they defer other purchases to save their coins for this larger priced coupon.” The Therapy Dogs International program provides a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. News According to Murphy R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighthgrade students in Cristina Cereola’s English classes in the Three Village Central School District have been learning about the journalism field as part of a recent narrative writing unit of study. As part of the curriculum, students learned about responsible journalism and put their lessons into practice by composing

individual newscasts on social issue topics in the community. In addition to their classroom assignment, students also spoke with a professional in the field. During an in-class workshop, Grant Parpan, the executive editor of the Times Review Media Group, which is located in Mattituck, spoke to the students about the journalism career and

how conveying news to the public has changed over time. He showed the students the difference between news that is printed in a newspaper versus those published through electronic mediums such as websites and social media. At the end of the workshop, students shared their own newscasts with Grant and received feedback on their writings.

Passing Along Hope Ward Melville High School 10th-grade English classes and those students enrolled in the Holocaust elective course recently participated in a daylong event called “All Night in a Day” focused on the book “Night” written by the late holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. The book recounted Elie’s experience in a Nazi German concentration camp at the height of the Holocaust toward the end of World War II. The students began the day by visually understanding how individuals were transported to

concentration camps. They packed into a small square in the front of the auditorium – the same size as the cattle cars that were used – and then one by one took a seat as the individuals they represented perished during the trip. Throughout the remainder of the morning, the students listened as several teachers and administrators read portions of the book aloud and paused several times to participate in workshops and activities. These included analyzing passages, listening and reacting to music

mentioned in the book, viewing an interview with Elie and artistically creating reactions to the messages of written piece. The students also helped to create the word “LOVE” on large poster boards using candles, one for each individual who was named to have lost their lives in the book. To continue to pass Elie’s message forward, the students passed out paper candles throughout the school the following day with the goal of inspiring others to be the hope they want to see in the world.

The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized middle school student Sapphire Perera on January 10th for an article she wrote titled “We Enjoy Holiday Lights, But Do the Trees.”

The researched article appeared in the December 15th edition of the Port Times Record after Perera submitted it for publication. The article focuses on the potential dangers holiday lights are

to trees and migratory birds. “Sapphire is an inspiration for standing up for what she believes in,” said Dr. Robert Neidig, middle school principal.

To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. Councilwoman Bonner said, “I commend this extraordinary group of

young men for their commitment to scouting and their service to the community. Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is a great achievement that they should all be very proud of.” Kyle Wrigley’s Eagle project was to enhance the grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches. The storage area in the camp needed to be secluded from a neighboring property. Vincent Uzzi’s Eagle project was to provide storage space for a veteran’s home in North Bellport using an old shed from Gera Gardens. William Loper’s Eagle

project was at Camp De Wolfe in Wading River. Cabins at the camp are in need of constant care. William’s project included the scraping off old paint on a cabin, pressure washing and giving it a new coat of paint. Noah Blunnie’s Eagle project was at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches. The seven benches surrounding the fire pit at the camp were in need of replacement. Under Noah’s direction new benches were designed and then constructed using Mahogany, stainless steel hardware and heavy duty aluminum frames.

Math Scholars Named The Institute of Create Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury has named two Port Jefferson Middle School students as Long Island Young Scholars of Mathematics. Teppei Fukuto and William Wu were among 86 students selected for

the honor out of a field of 600 top ranking students nominated from school districts across Long Island. As part of the honor, the students will participate in 60 hours of classes at SUNY Old Westbury, ranging in mathematical topics from algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory.

(NAPSI)—Older homes often have a unique charm—but few have insulation that meets modern energy efficiency standards. This can result in air leaks, wasted energy and high utility bills. One way to fix this is with spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. It can be seamlessly added in and around walls, attics and roofs. By sealing cracks, seams and joints,

some SPF products provide a waterproof membrane that acts as a vapor and air barrier, which in addition to insulating improves energy efficiency. A properly insulated home can reduce heating and cooling needs by 30 percent, according to the Department of Energy.
