We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

Teacher Pens Story As a special tribute to her grandmother and the bond shared among her family, Ward Melville High School special education teacher Virginia McCaffrey has authored and published the first in what she hopes to be a series of children’s books. The book, “Chased by a Bear,” was inspired by the stories her grandmother would tell during family sleepovers.

Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club in Port Jefferson School District completed their annual Blizzard Bags event for the Three Village Meals on Wheels program. Club members purchased the food items and assembled the bags before the December holidays. The items were sent to the Three Village Meals on Wheels program, which

then delivers them to senior citizens who receive their services. Each package contains four meals for seniors to have in their home to use when their daily Meals on Wheels delivery is canceled due to poor weather conditions. The meals consist of boxed or canned nonperishable items that can be stored for a later date. The Leo Club raises funds through

bake sales at the school and uses the proceeds to purchase the needed food items. “The Leo Club members recognize the real need for this program,” said technology teacher and Leo Club adviser Brian Chalmers. “Delivering food to the Three Village Meals on Wheels clients is a true community outreach event.”

Two Miller Place High School students were recently recognized for their excellence in physical education classes during a recent Suffolk ZONE Physical Education awards ceremony. Students Tyler Ammirato and Keara Thomson were selected by their physical education teachers to receive the

“Outstanding Senior Students in Physical Education for 2017-2018” award based on their exemplary effort, attitude, conduct and compassion within the curriculum of physical education. The Miller Place School District is committed to offering a rigorous physical education program. This

Partners in Science Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System and the internationally renowned research facility, they were accompanied by Middle School/High School library media specialist Mary LaSita. Both students have independent research projects under the leadership of science teacher Michel Krivosta. LaSita and Krivosta have collaborated and attended the program with students for the past three years. While at BNL, the students toured the electron storage ring, the

National Synchrotron Light Source II and attended a lunch with an environmental scientist and LaSita. The highlight of their visit was the opportunity to speak with a BNL research librarian about the research process, culling through extensive academic materials and the facility’s scientific databases. The students now have the opportunity to access the lab on school breaks and after school to continue their research.

Star Students Five students from Port Jefferson School District’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School were named “Star Students” by librarian Selinda Stout to promote the importance of literacy. The school’s version of the American Library Association Celebrity READ Campaign takes place several times per year.

The students were chosen for their excellent attitude, behavior and work ethic in the library. To recognize their achievement, their photos are displayed on the bulletin board outside of the library along with a summary of their favorite book. A printed version of each child’s poster is also sent home for their families to enjoy.

“When students experience the pleasures of independent reading, it encourages them to become lifelong learners,” said Stout. Star students are Dean Zaltsman – grade 1; Nina Gnatenko – grade 2; Jack Krause – grade 3; Lillianna Swift – grade 4; and Christopher Lotten – grade 5.

Students at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District are gaining valuable skills in leadership, communication and problem-solving as part of the LaunchX program. The students are learning everything they need to know about creating and growing their own business in the entrepreneurship club and competition that motivates them to solve a real need in a different way. They are supported by mentors and the detailed programs and resources of LaunchX. “LaunchX is not

a business plan competition,” said Earl L. Vandermeulen High School English teacher and club adviser Michael Augello. “The students are expected to actually create, test and sell their ideas.” The theme for this year is “Environmental Sustainability.” Open to students in grades 9-12, the high school has four teams in the program working on a way to filter out CO2 emissions from cars; creating a chip bag that is better for the environment; producing a self-sustaining gym and generating a platform that connects people with local

opportunities to volunteer. Each group is encouraged to start in a small market and works with a mentor who has experience in the field and can help the first-time entrepreneurs work through some of the challenges they will encounter. “It is truly impressive to see not only how creative and bright these students are, but how confident and professional they are becoming,” Augello said. “They are gaining skills that go well beyond entrepreneurship and will help them well beyond high school.”

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School honors level eighth-grade earth science classes recently attended a workshop and discovered several interesting facts about extraordinary fossils. During the event, Dr. Isaiah Nengo, a paleontologist working at Stony Brook University through the Turkana Basin Institute, shared an exciting discovery he and his team made in Kenya.

Beginning with a general explanation of science and paleontology, the story he narrated took the audience through the natural history of the Lake Turkana region and the conditions that led to the evolution of humans. The students held and examined a detailed replica of the incredibly intact fossil skull, determined by the team to be approximately 13

million years old. The skull provides a very important piece of the evolutionary puzzle leading to modern humans. The young ape was from a time that is not well represented with good hominid fossil specimens. Dr. Nengo donated a 3-D printed copy of the fossil skull, which the team named “Alesi” from a Turkana word-meaning ancestor, to the school.
