Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Aidan Kaminska has committed to the Stony Brook University Seawolves and becomes the first Division I lacrosse commit to hail from Port Jefferson. Aidan has been a two-year starter for Port Jefferson and plays for a highly competitive club team. His experiences have helped pave the way to a bright future both
athletically and academically. Port Jefferson’s varsity head coach Taylor Forstell sees this commitment as a great fit for both Aidan and the Stony Brook lacrosse program. “Aidan has been a special player for our program for many years,” Mr. Forstell said. “He is visible all off-season putting in the extra time to improve his game. Ward Melville Alumni Members of recent graduating classes from Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District returned to their alma mater in December to shed some light on college life and acceptance process for the building’s current students. During the annual Alumni Day event, the returning Patriots reflected upon their college experiences and shared sound advice with many students currently immersed in
the college application and decision process. The alumni spoke about the fears and excitement they faced during their first semesters, how they selected their college and the challenges they encountered when making the transition from high school to college. Throughout the day, the alumni addressed a number of questions as well. They spoke about their living situations, school size and academic requirements. Those who have already
entered post-graduate professions addressed their transition to the job market as well as their experiences in the college setting. January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation
Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day. Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends! It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve
allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways
to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community. They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction. After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community

As part of their English language arts curriculum, Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School second-graders in Carleen Parmegiani’s and Darleen Wells’ classes have written and illustrated realistic fiction books. The students have been learning about the genre, in which stories may resemble real-life occurrences and fictional characters may act or react similarly to actual people.
To celebrate their published pieces, they welcomed guests to a Holiday Book Shop to read and answer questions about their writing process. As guests stopped by their desks, the students fluently read their stories and followed up by asking for feedback on their books. They also shared their creative process including how they chose their settings or plots, many of which were mirrored on

Students from other classes, teachers, administrators and family members were encouraged to attend the educational and festive event. Each student had 10 copies of their books printed that could be “purchased” for gift giving with coupons presented to the guests. Peer Leadership Training Dozens of Earl. L Vandermeulen High School students took part in a full day of training about the health effects of vaping and nicotine. Taught by Bonnie Anderson and John Martin, educators from the Suffolk County Department of Health’s Office of Health Education, the peer education, interactive format will help these student leaders share the lessons they learned to other students in both the high school and Port Jefferson Middle School. The students viewed a
Powerpoint presentation, were educated on the negative effects of electronic cigarettes, refusal skill development, learned about resources they can share and worked together to create improvisational vignettes, which they will continue to practice and refine to be ready to present to their peers. “The more we educate our students, the more empowered they are to make positive decisions,” said PEER LEADERSHIP TRAINING - Earl.
