Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District took part in a festive Winter Sing-A-Long just before the holiday break. During the program, music teachers Kyra Kenwood led the crowd in the jolly performance while Dave Venture accompanied the vocalists on guitar and Mark Muchnik performed on piano.

Ward Melville High Schools seniors Jessica Ju and Eric Edward Wang have been named semifinalists in the 2015 Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Only 300 students nationwide received this honor in early January. The students were recognized based on the original research projects they completed in the area of science and mathematics.

On January 7th, the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter presented its first “Dogs Playing for Life” seminar, an introduction to a training program for shelter dogs featuring canine play
groups. The program, which has been introduced to more than 50 shelters across the United States and Canada, utilizes play groups as an assessment, enrichment, training and adoption

Training Seminar enhancement tool. The goal of the program is to demonstrate how play groups can improve the quality of life for dogs and the people who work and volunteer at shelters.
(Un)Deck The Halls Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree
to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did
when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Climate Change As part of their studies in Jon Maletta’s Living Environment class, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Jessica Gurevitch, a professor in the Department of Ecology & Evolution at Stony Brook University. During her lecture, Dr. Gurevitch spoke to students about key connections
between an increase in anthropogenic pollution in the form of greenhouse gases and average global temperatures. “So much evidence has now accumulated that there is no remaining scientific doubt that rising CO2 is resulting in an increased greenhouse effect,” she said. She also highlighted the importance of
understanding projected temperature changes and the impact on vulnerable, low-lying areas, such as the NY Metro Area, the Maldives and Myanmar. The Port Jefferson students, noted Mr. Maletta, were actively engaged in the discussion and appreciated the detailoriented presentation.

OBESITY IN AMERICA Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning
about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. We must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to recreate the lives that we have and the futures that we want.

Service Fair Held The Annual Agency Services Fair sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES)Student Support Services provided an opportunity for parents, school social workers, school psychologists, and teachers to connect with a wide-variety of service providers to prepare for their child’s/student’s future. ESBOCES School Social Worker Jennifer FarnumWeber said, “The goal of the fair is to make connections between school districts and outside community agencies. We hope to fit the needs of our students and our component school districts to the best of our ability.” Jennifer’s role is to partner with the community and outside
agencies to keep social workers and psychologists up to date with the most recent trends. Program Administrator Elizabeth Melichar said, “It’s never too early for parents and schools to think about transitioning their child/student. In essence, the social workers make the connections. They are the conduit to give parents names and information about services and programs. As part of the New York State Education Department regulations, we need to provide parent training and education on a regular basis. This fair is a perfect forum.” More than fifty representatives from day habilitation programs, group homes, respite
programs, service coordination, and financial planning services were on hand to provide important information to attendees. Herb and Regina Johnson from Westhampton Beach attended the fair on behalf of their eighteen-yearold son who has autism. They were looking for guardianship information but after visiting all of the tables, they had two bags filled with brochures, pamphlets, business cards, and more. Mr. Johnson said, “The fair was very beneficial. Everything was here, all in one place. We got very useful information about social security, and now we know what we need to do, where to go, and who to talk to for our son.”
Holiday Cheer In 1998 Paul Olenick said he saw an ad in a local paper asking for holiday donations for the children of migrant workers. He said, “I thought maybe the older children might like a new bike. So, every year since then I look for bicycles on sale and I buy two so I can donate one to a boy and one to a girl when Julia Schnurman has the holiday party for the migrant families.” Muriel Froehlich, mother of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Associate Superintendent of Educational Services Peggie Staib, held several parties this summer and asked that attendees bring a new toy for either a boy or girl. Ms. Froehlich received several hundred toys and donated them to Julia Schnurman for the Family Outreach Education
Program (FEOP) Holiday Party. Julia Schnurman is administrative coordinator for FEOP at ESBOCES. Every year a holiday party and informational meeting is held for the migrant families. FEOP programs are a cluster of speciallyfunded Title I programs that serve at-risk children from ages 2 to 22, who are the children of migratory agricultural workers, who live below the poverty line. Educational and advocacy services in early childhood education, as well as academic support for school-aged students, is available at no cost to districts to help these students have an equal opportunity and be successful in school. Families gathered in the multi-purpose room at ESBOCES Ward Tech
campus in Riverhead, enjoyed pizza and snacks, while listening to Francisco Prieto, representative from the United States Department of Identification and Recruitment and migrant education programs, about updated information and services. Student Joselyn Valentin was recognized by Julia Schnurman for achieving Honor Roll status at Riverhead Middle School. Joselyn’s mother thanked the FEOP staff for all their hard work, “because of you and all your support, my daughter made the Honor Roll,” she said. After the meeting, Santa arrived to present the bicycles and presents donated by community members Muriel Froehlich and Paul Olenick.
Two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors have been honored with Congressional Service Academy nominations from former Congressman Timothy Bishop. A Congressional nomination is a necessary first step in gaining acceptance into a military academy and requires students to submit applications and participate in an interview process. The Port Jefferson
students, Dylan Wennerod and James Murphy, both have had life-long dreams of attending a service academy. Wennerod intends on applying to the Merchant Marine Academy to study engineering and also play football, a sport he has been involved in since the third grade. “I have always wanted to serve my country,” said Wennerod. “Both my grandfathers were in the military.”
Likewise, Murphy said he too has always had his eye on attending a military school. His goal is to attend West Point, a school that he was exposed when he competed in gymnastics. Also motivating him is a long-line of relatives who have served their country. Murphy said he plans to study engineering and also possibly pre-med as he is thinking about a future career as a physical therapist.

TOP SPELLER - After seven challenging rounds, R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighth-grader Samarah Ahmed was named this year’s school spelling bee champion. After correctly spelling the word “sheathing” Samarah was crowned the winner and will now advance to represent the school at the Long Island Spelling Bee at Hofstra University in February.
In preparation for one of the most important decisions they will make in the near future, Ward Melville High School juniors and seniors had the chance to learn the ins and outs of several colleges when more than 50 graduates participated in this year’s Alumni Day. During the annual program, the former
students spoke about what drew them to their current school, campus and dorm life, debunked a few common misconceptions and offered advice on how to make the most out of the experience. This year’s presenters came from 39 different colleges in more than 25 states. As a new addition, two presenters were recent
college graduates who spoke about what helped them land jobs at two top financial firms. To add to the spirit of the day, Ward Melville faculty and staff wore spirit wear from their alma mater during the event.

(ADRC), held its annual holiday luncheon at The Milleridge Inn in Jericho to recognize the sponsors and top fundraisers for this year’s Walks to End Alzheimer’s. Sitting here on a bench, the sun shining down on my head As I look around, I begin to use my five senses Touch I’m touching hot wood that is as warm as a cup of tea Sound I hear birds chirping a soft melody while a lawn mower is buzzing far in the distance, making the birds sing louder Sight I’m seeing green all around me, the trees whooshing in the light breeze very faintly The grass sitting, still rooted in the dirt Scent I smell the faint scent of fresh tangy cut grass as the wind blows the smell all around me. The air is fresh, not a cloud in the sky It’s a vast open blue, as if an ocean without the soaring waves It is hot, but a good hot; mild,where you want to be out all day There seems to be no end in sight, time is gone
