The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition. The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th, 2017. Three students are recognized with Juror’s Awards. Maria Mancz, a student from Division Avenue High School earned an award for her mixed media piece, “Old Man and The Sea”. Ms. Mancz’s art teacher is Timothy Ryan. Maria Anania from Farmingdale High School earned an award for her pen and ink piece, “Withering Youth.” Ms. Anania’s art teacher is Regina Nicholas. Ricky Vargas from Valley Stream South High School earned an award for his graphite piece, “Restraining Hatred.” Mr. Vargas’s art teacher is Ed Lee. “This year’s work is an excellent example of a wide selection of media,” said the coordinator of the exhibition, LIU Post adjunct professor of art Cristina Lomangino, “yet there is a coincidental and beautiful content theme in many pieces. It is evident that each piece is personal to the artist and conveys real talent in form at such an early age.” For Gallery hours, please call 516.299.2464. Scholar Athlete Status The Miller Place High School Athletic Department announces Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer, Field Hockey, Girls Tennis and Volleyball varsity fall teams have achieved Scholar Athlete Team status from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). “The District is proud of the athletic and academic success of each of our student-athletes on and off the field,” said Miller Place School District Superintendent Dr. Marianne Cartisano.
“These students are models of the standard of academic and athletic excellence characteristic of the Miller Place School District.” The NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Program recognizes Varsity teams that have a total Grade Point Average (GPA) of 90.00 or above for 75% of the team’s roster. In the fall of 2016, 149 students participated in the seven teams that earned Scholar Athlete status. NYSPHSAA also recognizes individual athletes who achieve a 90.00 GPA or higher. Of the 193 students participating in all sports at Miller Place
High School, 113 earned Scholar Athlete status. that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Miller Place High School seniors Joe Filippetti and Jillian Spreckels were recently recognized by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAPHRED) as the top performers in the District’s physical education program. Both students were honored at the organization’s Suffolk County Zone awards banquet. During the banquet 114 students from 57 high schools throughout the county were honored. The students were
chosen for their effort and compassion in physical education class, as well as their understanding of the role physical education programs play in building relationships and inspiring a life-long commitment to health. To qualify, students had to maintain an “A” average in physical education throughout their high school careers, have an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate outstanding character and leadership and be a recognized role model for living a healthy lifestyle.

Ward Melville High School seniors Albert Liu, Kirti Nath, Kavya Tangella and Nestor Tkachenko captured top science accolades this January and were recently named 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars in recognition of their work on complex science research topics. Only 300 students were selected from a pool of 1750 as 2017 scholars; each of who were awarded a $2,000 scholarship and a matching $2,000 donation per student was donated to their school. From the pool of scholars, 40 student finalists will be selected later this month and invited to Washington, D.C. in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists
and compete for awards, including the top award of $250,000. The Regeneron Science Talent Search, a program of the Society for Science and the Public, is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. It was formally known as the Intel Science Talent Search and, under that name, recognized students at this level as Intel Semifinalists. Albert, whose project was titled “Anomaly Detection in Time Series of Dependent Stochastic Block Model Graphs” worked under the direction of a mentor at Johns Hopkins University. He is planning to study computer science at Carnegie Mellon University this fall. The other three scholars worked under the tutelage of mentors at
Stony Brook University. Kirti, whose project was titled “Assessing the Developmental and Metabolic Toxicity of Neuroactive Pharmaceuticals Using Early Life Stage Zebrafish (Danio rerio),” is planning to study economics and life science at the University of Pennsylvania. Kavya, whose project was titled “Hearing Sounds, and the Illusion of Seeing Longer-Lasting Shapes,” will be attending Johns Hopkins University and is leaning toward studying neuroscience. Nestor, whose project was titled “Can Cars Fly? Eddy Current Levitation as Viable Technology,” is undecided on which college he will attend but is looking to explore the field of engineering physics.

Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifth-grade select chorus High Notes recently took the stage to perform the comedic musical “How to Train Your Reindeer (To Fly).” The musical, which incorporated historical
information about the rise of American aviation, included five original songs focused on a group of cadet reindeer learning the way to fly. Throughout the story, a number of famous North Pole residents graced the stage to offer input and feedback as the
ambitious young reindeer attended the magical training. The students worked to perfect their performance for weeks under the direction of teacher Craig Knapp.

The Miller Place School District recently celebrated the athletic and academic accomplishments of 14 students from Miller Place High School as they signed National Letters of Intent, identifying the college they will be attending and playing sports on the
collegiate level. Athletic coaches from throughout the District joined the studentathletes, who were wearing shirts emblazoned with their respective colleges’ logos, as they officially made their individual college decision.
The schools students will be attending include Stony Brook University, University of Pittsburgh, Lehigh University, Mercy College and Arizona State University, as well as several others.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the
holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in
countless preservation projects. The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation. “The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “This year’s event

SPELLING TO THE TOP - R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh- and eighth-graders recently showcased their linguistic skills when they took part in the school’s annual spelling bee. After going head-to-head for 20 challenging rounds, eighth-grader Elizabeth Star captured the schoolwide title by correctly spelling the word “negativism.” She will now compete in the Long Island Spelling Bee, which will be held at Hofstra University on February 5th. present-day lighthouse keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the light keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Includes a tour of the Lens Building and the Boat House. Tour takes approximately 2 1/2 hours. The fee is $15 for FILPS members: $20 for non-members. Reservations required. Limit 12 people. *** Lighthouses are for Lovers Saturday, February 11th,
