Attitude For Gratitude In correlation with Thanksgiving, Nassakeag and Setauket elementary school students in Kerry Diana’s health classes completed a project focused on attitude for gratitude. They have been recognizing and expressing thanks and appreciation in all parts of life, for both big and small things. The students played a gratitude game which
was essentially “pick-up sticks with a purpose.” The challenge in the game is to successfully pick up a colored stick without moving any others but the added challenge for scoring the points associated with the stick is to report out to the group and record on their gratitude score card something they are thankful for associated with the category assigned
to the stick color (Red = a person, Yellow = a place, Blue = an item, Green = anything). The additional challenge was to think to themselves, why are they thankful for this; they did not have to report that to the group if not comfortable but they were challenged to think about it personally.

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.
Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.
This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

“Heart Attack” Noodles By Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York
Don’t let the name of this dish scare you, but we do recommend splurging on this one as a once in a while treat! For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. This dish was always a big hit!” *Editor’s Note: Try serving with a side of sauteed greens for a balanced meal
What You Will Need:
1 Bag of Egg Noodles 1 Lb. of Fatty Bacon (you’ll need the fat for flavor) Fine Bread Crumbs - plain is best
Preparation:
Prepare Egg Noodles and set aside Cook bacon until crispy and set aside Pour warm bacon fat over egg noodles Crumble bacon and add to noodles Add in fine bread crumbs until all bacon fat is absorbed (you can eyeball it)

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to
LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,
my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”
Students and staff members throughout the Port Jefferson schools helped spread holiday cheer through festive concerts, toy and food collections and seasonal carol-grams. The elementary, middle school and high school winter concerts were joyful celebrations throughout December. Members of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s chorus delivered holiday carol-grams to the delight of recipients and onlookers. Their songs of the season surprised and delighted classmates, teachers, staff members and administrators. With the generosity of so many in the schools and community and
various clubs and school organizations, 17 families in the Port Jefferson school community were gifted with food baskets and other needed items. Members of the National Honor Society, along with advisers Mary Lacita and Kathi Galvin, hosted a food fundraiser, which was all donated to the program run by social worker Kristin Britt. The high school Student Organization, under the leadership of adviser Gina Fedler, joined in the giving by creating breakfast baskets for all of the families also. Along with Port Jefferson Middle School teachers and advisers Christina Marino and Kayleen Everitt, the National Junior Honor Society collected gifts to
donate to children in need as part of a toy drive for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. “Our goal was to make a difference and bring some holiday cheer to the families in need,” Ms. Marino said. The students and staff donated a total of 60 gifts to the coalition. At Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, under the leadership of guidance counselor Jessica Peterson, staff, students and parents collected toys, gift cards and other items and worked along with members of the Port Jefferson Library and Port Jefferson Fire Department to ensure a happy holiday for eight families with 17 Port Jefferson children in total.

Ward Melville Alumni
Members of recent graduating classes from Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District returned to their alma mater in December to shed some light on college life and acceptance process for the building’s current students. During the annual Alumni Day event, the returning Patriots reflected upon their college experiences and shared sound advice with many students currently immersed in
the college application and decision process. The alumni spoke about the fears and excitement they faced during their first semesters, how they selected their college and the challenges they encountered when making the transition from high school to college. Throughout the day, the alumni addressed a number of questions as well. They spoke about their living situations, school size and academic requirements. Those who have already entered
post-graduate professions addressed their transition to the job market as well as their experiences in the college setting. Some of the colleges represented during the event included Boston University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Duke University, FIT, Marist College, MIT, Stony Brook University, University of Miami, University of Texas and the University of Vermont.

Champions at Arrowhead Under the leadership of special education teacher Marisa Castoro, Arrowhead Elementary School’s classes collaborated to create a project, “#thechampionproject.” Seeking inspiration from
the song “The Champion” by Carrie Underwood, the group created a wall collage of student work (writing and an acrostic poem) based on the song. The project is a great reflection of this year’s
school theme of being one’s own champion, having a growth mindset and persevering despite any challenges.
Village For Veterans Setauket Elementary School fifth-graders in Christine Beck’s class used their creativity to fashion an enormous Gingerbread Village this holiday season. With the help of Math AIS teacher Lisa Wall, the
students used traditional ingredients to bring the display to life. Such items as pretzels, frosting and various candy items helped the space take shape and bring unique items such as an igloo, a train, snowmen
and even Christmas trees to life. The completed project was donated to the Long Island Veterans Hospital in Stony Brook.
