Representing the Port Jefferson Boys Soccer team were AllConference players Casey Abelein and Kent Ueno, All-League player Jasper Rubin-Sigler and All-County Academic player Dan Gross. The district also received the 2013 League 7 Sportsmanship Award for both Varsity and JV Boys Soccer.

Congressional Nominations
The Port Jefferson School District is proud to announce that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students Paul Cavanagh and Nicholas Heide have received service academy congressional nominations from New York State Congressman Timothy Bishop. In order to attend a service academy, a candidate must
receive this nomination. In a congratulatory letter that both students received, Congressman Bishop wrote, “Your military leadership potential is evident, and you have consistently shown that you are a dedicated and responsible individual who is deeply committed to serving our country.”
On December 15th, the two students and their families attended a luncheon for nominees at the Coram Fire Department, hosted by Congressman Bishop and his staff. Paul received a nomination to the U.S Merchant Marine Academy and Nicholas received a nomination to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Tim Mazzei and Councilwoman Bonner announced today that the Town will hold two special “post-holiday” residential shredding and e-waste drop-off events for residents to recycle their old paper documents and safely dispose of unused electronic devices. The events will be on Saturday, January 11th at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville and Saturday, January 18th at Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mt. Sinai. “Many residents will be getting new electronic items for Christmas and we can help them dispose of the old ones in a way that is not harmful to the environment,” said Supervisor Romaine. “These events will also give people a chance to clean out their closets, basements and garages to recycle their papers. It’s all part of the Town’s efforts to encourage residents to recycle more in the new year. Councilman Mazzei,
who serves as Town Board Liaison to the Department of Waste Management said, “After the holidays is the perfect time to hold a paper shredding and e-waste recycling event and I urge all residents to do their part for the environment by dropping off their old electronics and paper. By participating, they can help make Brookhaven a better place to live.” Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who represents Council District 2, where Rose Caracappa Senior Center is located said, “Our last e-waste event at Rose Caracappa, was a huge success with over 15,000 pounds collected. We should all make recycling our New Year’s resolution and this is a great way to get started.” Residents can also drop off old electronic devices all year round at the resident e-waste drop-off site at the Brookhaven Town Landfill, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. Starting January 6th,
residents can dispose of their e-waste at the Manorville Compost Facility, located on Papermill road in Manorville. Drop off Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Documents brought to the shredding event will be dumped into a 65-gallon container and then into the shredder, enabling each participant to witness the secure destruction of sensitive papers. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags. Documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other contaminants such as rubber bands. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center is located at 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. (Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations. Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/Cutchogue
Elementary Schools students who made donations. The Webelos 1 den won the Scout raffle, and Aiden Russell, a 5th grader from Southold Elementary, won the school raffle. “The ‘Stuff a Boat’ campaign is our way of giving back to Southold and to other local communities nationwide,” said Capt. Students in Kristin Poulos and Karen Stamatopoulos’s class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School took a closer look at the children’s book The Polar Express this December to help them get into the holiday spirit. “The children listened to the story and worked on a variety of reading and receptive/expressive
language skills,” said Poulos. “They made predictions and inferences, asked questions, stated opinions, recalled events, sequenced information and engaged in conversation about the story.” The students also viewed segments of the 2004 motion picture based on the book, comparing and contrasting it to the text. The unit concluded with a

On December 19th, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School hosted its annual schoolwide spelling bee as part of the National Scripps Spelling Bee competition. The opportunity is offered to all fourth- and fifthgraders by the school’s SEAL program to help improve spelling, enhance vocabulary and foster a deeper comprehension
of the correct usage of the English language. Prior to the event, each classroom hosted its own competition, producing two winners each to advance to the school bee. The 16 classroom bee winners put their minds to the test in front of an audience of their peers in an attempt to claim the top spot. With the correct
spelling of “portmanteau,” fifth-grader Peggy Yin won the championship round, followed by runnerup Royce Perera. Peggy will move on to the local spelling bee, which will be held at Hofstra University on February 9th, to compete against students from across the island.

Students in Nancy Winkler-Brogan’s thirdgrade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, along with the help of teacher Jacqueline Gandolfo, baked 20 loaves of bread as part of a “good deeds” initiative. The baked goods were donated
recipe instructions and worked cooperatively as a group to complete the task. The students applied their math abilities to a real-world setting while simultaneously improving listening skills.” Students mixed ingredients in the classroom and then gave the loaves to the lunchroom staff to bake in the school cafeteria. To wrap up the project, classmates worked together to package and prepare the loaves for delivery. “Most importantly, the class realized that working together and helping each other really is the true meaning of the holiday season,” said Winkler-Brogan. “It makes me happy to hear my students ask to participate in projects such as these more often.”

Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately
inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a job well done.” Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn. “Our men and women of Emergency Medical Services in Suffolk County have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am proud of Christine’s unwavering composure and thank her for her commitment to serve the people of Suffolk County.”
The Thought That Counts
Isabella Gordon used the contents of her own piggy bank, and then collected over $300 in donations, to purchase gifts to donate to the Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital. In addition, several Gordon family friends purchased even more gifts for Isabella to donate! Isabella Antonia Gordon is a 10 year old 5th grader at the Terryville Road Elementary School in Port Jefferson Station, NY. Isabella told her mom and dad, Alexandra and Michael Gordon, that she wanted to do something special for the children at the hospital that “… helped me when I was sick.” Isabella, her mom, sister Emma and
brother Joseph, traveled over to Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital on December 18th, to “… make the sick boys and girls happy” for Christmas. Isabella’s mom explained that in November, 2011, Isabella was transported to the Pediatric ICU at Stony Brook Hospital by ambulance. She was diagnosed with Epilepsy and spent three days there. “Though she and her family were frightened, the staff did everything it could to allay our fears, and make Isabella comfortable, said Ali Gordon.” ‘Bella’ most remembers the staff of the Child Life room that brought toys and activities
to keep her distracted, and provide a sense of normalcy during her stay. Isabella remembers their kindness and smiles, along with the children who are sometimes at the hospital for a very long time. She wanted to help those children this holiday season, and make them smile. Fortunately, Isabella’s family is relieved, and grateful, that with medication, her epilepsy is under control. And now Isabella has provided Children’s Hospital patients with a few more toys and activities to make them smile this holiday season!

At this point, your picture of a “retirement lifestyle” may be, at best, hazy, hidden as it is behind a veil of experiences you’ve yet to encounter. But as you move through the years, your view of retirement comes into clearer and closer focus — and this vision will have a big impact on your savings and investment strategies. Consequently, to create and implement those strategies effectively, you’ll need to define your retirement vision by identifying its various parts. Here are some to consider: Travel — If you’re like many people, you may dream of traveling during your retirement. But what does “travel” mean to you? Do you envision taking a cruise or an international trip every year? Or is your idea of travel just a short jaunt to a popular destination, such as a lake or the mountains or the beach? The difference in costs between global and U.S.-based travel can be enormous, so you’ll need to define your goals and estimate your expenses. Second home — Once you retire, you’ll have to make some housing-related decisions. Should you sell your home and “downsize”? Or do you want to keep your current residence and possibly purchase a second home, such as a condominium, in another part of the country? Obviously, you’ll need to factor in these choices when you think about how to invest before you retire and how to manage your withdrawals from your 401(k), IRA and other accounts during your retirement. Volunteer activities — You might think that your volunteer activities during retirement won’t affect your finances much. But if you are particularly ambitious, and your volunteerism involves travel, renting space, purchasing equipment and so on, you might be looking at some large cash outlays. Furthermore, if you host people at your house, you may be incurring some types of liability risk, which you might need to address through appropriate insurance coverage. Hobbies — During your working years, you may pursue your hobbies always with the thought that you can devote a lot more time to them after you retire. However, expanded hobby activities may involve expanded costs. For example, if you’re good with cars, you might decide to invest in that foreign sports car of which you’ve dreamed. Or, if you’re fascinated by genealogy, perhaps you’ll start traveling to places once inhabited by your ancestors. These types of activities can be expensive, so you’ll
have to evaluate your saving, spending and investing habits to determine how to accommodate your increased expenditures on your hobbies. Second career — Many people look forward to retiring from one career so they can start another — opening a small business, consulting or even taking a part-time job. Clearly, if you were to start your own business, some expenses would be involved, so you’ll have to plan for them. Even if you become a consultant or work part time, you could incur various costs, including travel. And, in relation to
these types of work, you may also have insurance and health care issues to address. By identifying the various components of your retirement vision, and estimating their respective costs, you can make those saving, spending and investment choices that can help you work toward your retirement dream.
