On The Horizon As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. The United States Air Force Thunderbirds last headlined the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach in 2009 and were scheduled to appear again in 2013, but were forced to cancel due to government sequester budget cuts. “We welcome the team back to Long Island with great enthusiasm,” continued Gorman. “Over 360,000 spectators chose the Bethpage Air Show as their Memorial Day holiday weekend destination in 2009, when

the Thunderbirds last visited. We are confident that their return to Long Island in 2015 will draw in a sizeable crowd as well,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “Memorial Day weekend is an important time to honor the men and women of our country’s military, which is exactly what the Thunderbirds demonstration squadron is all about – to honor and share the story of our nation’s military who have served and currently serve at locations around the world,” Armyn continued. The Thunderbirds were formed in 1953, and since have been charged with demonstrating the professionalism of Airmen and the capabilities of modern airpower. Their performance at the Bethpage Air Show will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines.

She has completed nursing school and is preparing for the board exams to continue her career in healthcare. “Being a single working mother with limited income, as well as a student with no family members around to support or assist, we find ourselves moving from place to place,” Olabisi said. “From living in one room with two active boys to living in a tiny one-anda-half bedroom basement apartment we were grateful to have our own place.” Otega, 18, is a freshman in college and Tobor, 15, is an honors student and a sophomore in high school. They are active members and regular volunteers for the youth department in their church and in the community. “The introduction to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk came just in time,

as God provided for our situation,” Olabisi added. “The most exciting moment was being approved and hearing the news of where our house would be built, a place we could sit back and count our many blessings through the great vision and mission of Habitat for Humanity. This is overwhelming for us and we are so thankful.” For 25 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered over 165 families to achieve their dreams of homeownership through our affordable housing program. Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

A holiday wish came true for Olabisi, Otega and Tobor Ogunnoiki when the family recently celebrated the wall raising of their dream home in Connetquot with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk on December 18th. Habitat staff, volunteers and students from Connetquot High School, which marks the school’s 14th year of participation with Habitat Suffolk’s Student Build program, along with representatives from house sponsors Optimum and Thrivent Financial, their 12th house sponsorship through the Thrivent Builds partnership, as well as local leaders, worked feverishly constructing the first walls of the Ogunnoiki’s new home. Olabisi, a single mother of the two boys, originally hails from West Africa and has dedicated her life to working with people with

(NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. Cherches and SO Vice President Kayley Okst both said they were more than happy to lead this year’s effort. “It’s nice to be able to help,” said Cherches. Okst agreed, adding, “It’s great to know that we were able to get these children what they wanted this year.”

Children who are staying at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the holiday season will receive “busy bags” thanks to Heather Colucci’s second grade class at Charles E. Walters Elementary School. “I liked putting the bags together because the kids may not have toys,” said student Summer Riekert. “If their friends come to visit, they can play with

them too.” To let the young patients know that they are thinking of them during the holidays, the class decided which items to include in the activity bags and wrote letters asking the school community for donations. The class then carefully assembled the bags with Play-Doh, coloring books, crayons, pads, stickers, and handcrafted games.

Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the Hallelujah Chorus. Refreshments and fellowship followed. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need.Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has

also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB

found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided

to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According

to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit

bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We

encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
