SHIMMERING SOLSTICE at Old Westbury Gardens, presented by Catholic Health, will offer visitors the opportunity to behold a series of magical light displays as they walk along the beautiful meandering paths through Old Westbury Gardens’ Walled Garden, Rose Garden, South Lawn, and Allée. The event runs through January 9, 2022. S H I M M E R I N G SOLSTICE is a completely custom-built show that has been uniquely designed to highlight the features of Old Westbury Gardens. Ward Melville High School’s talented student actors, musicians and set designers recently impressed audiences as they took to the stage to perform the Broadway classic, “Les Misérables.” The cast took audiences

on a journey through 19th century France during the 1832 June Rebellion as a French peasant, Jean Valjean, sought redemption after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. Audiences marveled at the students vocal talents and

acting abilities, which were supported by a flawless pit orchestra and stage crew. The show was directed by Ward Melville teacher Linda Contino and the stage crew was overseen by teacher Steve Rogers.

FRIENDS OF SARAH-5K - The Sarah Grace Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race this past spring drawing participants from across the country, the year. The Foundation is also considering the return of the popular Night of Laughter fundraiser dinner if these events can be held safely. New for 2022 will be a clothing drive fundraiser in January. Old clothes can be dropped off at a designated site, and the Foundation would be paid per pound of clothing. Another BakeLESS-Cake Sale is in the works for next summer. The Foundation is also planning restaurant fundraisers, in which Sarah Grace would be the featured charity on certain dates at local restaurants. Supporters would be notified of those dates to dine out at these restaurants and the Foundation would receive a percentage of the sales that night. Three-ply, washable face masks with the Sarah Grace Foundation logo continue to be sold on the website, www. thesarahgracefoundation. org. The masks are adjustable and available in adult and child sizes. The cost is $13 for an adult mask and $12 for a children’s’ mask. “The supporters of the Sarah Grace Foundation allow us to continue our mission in aiding children and their families during such a difficult time,” said Foundation President

A Week Of Spirit And Culture

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff recently celebrated an International Spirit Week through collaborative interactive projects and initiatives. Throughout the celebration culturally diverse music was played over the PA system between classes and several ELL students shared inspiration quotes and information about their heritages during the mornings’ announcements. In

addition, the building’s World Languages teachers coordinated a fun classroom activity that embraced diversity and cultural awareness. Using paper cut outs, students decorated the images with descriptions of their own family culture and used the pieces to create beautiful displays of unity outside the classrooms. Many teachers also contributed to a collaborative Google Slides presentation to

help the students learn about their teachers’ myriad backgrounds. The slideshow was displayed within the cafeteria during the week. Lastly, club members participated in a windowpane decorating contest embellishing the windows outside the cafeteria to represent countries around the world. The winning club – the National Junior Art Honor Society – was honored with a pizza party.

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza raffle, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday meals and gifts to struggling families. Ongoing toy drives have enabled the Foundation to send gifts to children at its core hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. To mark Childhood Cancer Month in September, anyone who made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year; An inperson 5K race in addition to another virtual race later in

Port Jefferson School District Forming Capital Advisory Panel

The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education and District Administration invite community members to join a newly formed Capital Advisory Panel. The panel will provide feedback on proposed capital bond projects potentially slated for fall 2022. Committee members will explore possible construction projects and discuss the financial parameters for the proposals. The panel will provide insight to assist the district in developing a long range plan for the

school facilities. “We are looking for a broad range of input from all of our community members,” said Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan. “This includes students, staff members and residents. We welcome anyone with a background in finance, planning and construction - or just an interest and love for our schools! Please join us for this important dialogue that will impact our Port Jefferson students and facilities for years to come.” Interested members can

New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) will be able to expand its marine conservation and educational programs through a multiyear grant from Bank of America, after being named as a 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardee for its impactful work on Long Island. PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold

onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they

get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety

guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from

floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an
