LIU Post’s growing fashion merchandising program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion industry. The mannequins and dresses will be part of a Capstone project this spring where the students will catalog and display the items, creating a full fashion exhibition with detailed signage as their culminating project. Cherie Serota, Director of Fashion Merchandising at LIU Post, was thrilled with the significant gifts for the program. As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help! The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children. This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more. The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers. They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless. demonstrate a high level of physical education achievement, display leadership qualities in school and community activities and maintain a high level of academic excellence. The Suffolk Zone of the NYSAHPERD honors one young man and one

As part of a cross-grade level initiative called the Buddy Program, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grade students in Christine Wicks’ class have been sharing their love of learning with the kindergarten students in Melissa Martin’s class. Most recently, they combined their English language arts skills to draft letters to Santa as part of the Macy’s Make-A-Wish letter campaign, which donates $1 to the Make-A-

Wish Foundation for every letter it receives. The older students made a template of a letter and encouraged the younger ones to fill in the words, helping them to sound out letters and assisting them with spelling and ideas for the content. The two teachers have partnered for close to a decade on having their classes work together and have both seen growth in the school’s program with other classes partnering

and more importantly the friendships that are formed and endure throughout the school year. According to Wicks, together the students experience the skills of communication as the older students learn patience and perseverance and the younger ones are being helped with spelling and sentence structure, a twofold positive outcome for learning.

Additionally, they shared information about the centuries-old Roe House, which displays a letter from Washington thanking the members of the Spy Ring and a map that details the trail they traveled to send messages

from Connecticut across the Long Island Sound into Port Jefferson and then into Manhattan. “The students are learning about this time period during class and had the unique opportunity to connect textbook learning to an authentic, interactive experience allowing for the synthesis of knowledge,” said seventh-grade teacher Monica Consalvo, who organized the learning program.

As part of their English language arts curriculum, students in Carleen Parmegiani’s second-grade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District have written and illustrated Realistic Fiction books. They have been learning about the genre, in which stories may resemble real-life occurrences and fictional characters may act or react similarly to actual people. To celebrate their published pieces, they hosted a Holiday Book

Shop to read and answer questions about their writing process. As guests stopped by their desks, they fluently read their stories and followed up by asking two questions such as – “how did you like my book?” or “what was your favorite part?” – to help them with feedback on their work. They also shared their creative process including why they chose a character’s name or if they mirrored their setting or plots on real-life events. Student Nina Gnatenko

used some exceptional language in her story including “mechanic,” “unsure,” “excitedly” and “demanded,” words she learned by listening closely to conversations as research for her story. Family members were encouraged to attend the Holiday Book Shop where each student had 10 copies of their books printed that could be “purchased” for holiday gift giving with coupons presented to the guests.

Suffolk Zone Winners Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors Connor Kaminska and Luigia Than were each named 2017 Suffolk Zone award winners by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. This award is presented annually to the top female and male senior physical education leaders in each Suffolk County high school. According to Dr.

along with second-grade teachers, led the excited and cheerful students as they sang holiday songs to the residents. “The students played their instruments, and taught the residents how to play along,” said Mrs. White. “Before leaving, each child introduced themselves to a new

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
