Celebrating the Festival of Lights Students in Edna Louise Spear Elementary School celebrated the Festival of Lights with activities throughout the school. Amy Castaldo’s thirdgrade class welcomed two parents who shared a celebration of Hanukkah with them. Stacey York and Natalie Litman taught the students about the history of the dreidel
and the meaning of its letters. The students then tried their hand at the traditional game. They also learned about some of the symbols and traditions of the holiday and enjoyed potato latkes with applesauce. Mrs. York then read the book “How the Kvetch Stole Hanukkah,” a fun story with rhyming

Partners in Science with BNL Four Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students recently visited Brookhaven National Laboratory for the Partners in Science program. Hana Ali, Dylan Dugourd, Ameen Khan and Peggy Yin applied to be a part of
the program that grants high school students who are working on approved science projects access to the vast BNL scientific database of reference and research materials. Sponsored by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System
and the internationally renowned research facility, the students were accompanied by Middle School/High School library media specialist Mary LaSita. While at BNL, the students toured the National Synchrotron
Light Source II with BNL scientist Kara Laasch, attended a lecture on the synchrotron, used the research library and attended a lunch with several scientists and LaSita.

Growing up in a family in the culinary field, Vitto Lombardi started cooking at the age of 8. “My mom was not the best cook, so I thought if I could do it and put good food on the table, why not?” he said. Annual fundraising event was held Beauty on Wednesday, December 12 simultaneously in the Cosmetology Departments at both Edward J. Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale and Harry B. Ward Technical Center in Riverhead. This event was open to the public and offered salon services for a donation of $5 along with a nonperishable
food item. Available services included haircuts, thermal styling, blow outs, manicures, and paraffin treatments. St. John’s Nepomucene in Bohemia and the Long Island Council of Churches and New Beginnings Brendan House in Riverhead benefitted from this event, which raised $750, in addition to the
food that was collected. Cosmetology students proudly donated their time by utilizing the skills they are working hard to perfect in class on real customers, friends, and family members. Chewy Macaroons

In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes. Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.
What You Will Need:
2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla

Drop by the teaspoonful onto a lightly greased baking sheet Leave about 2 inches in between each cookie on the sheet Bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes or until golden brown

A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”
I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then
why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

On Monday, December 17th, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr was joined by service providers and county employees at a ribbon cutting ceremony inside a new “program pod” called Choose to Thrive for incarcerated women at the county jail. Choose to Thrive is an important step forward in Sheriff Toulon’s pledge to ensure that all county inmates will receive meaningful transitional assistance while incarcerated. Sheriff Toulon moved female inmates from Riverhead into the Yaphank Jail
in October, and began meeting with non-profit groups over the summer to plan programming for his Choose to Thrive initiative. The groups, including New Hour for Women and Children and the Empowerment Collaborative of Long Island, began offering services inside the women’s housing area late last month. Incarcerated women commonly report addiction and mental health issues, domestic violence, and traumatic incidents in their lives. Many have also been victims of human trafficking. The
programming is designed to provide a full continuum of services from prerelease to post-release, and address substance use disorders, parenting and family reunification, mental health, and human service needs. Other participating agencies include the Family Service League, Alcoholics Anonymous, the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk, ES BOCES, Connecting for a Purpose, Leaving the Outlaw Behind, and Journey for a Difference. Additional programming is being planned for 2019

If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.

It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.
One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.
My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us.
I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves. This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,

The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose.

Putting Her Best Foot Forward At their last luncheon meeting of 2018, the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson was delighted to welcome their newest Most Motivated Student of the Month from Comsewogue School District, JFK Middle School 6th grader Alyson McKay. Alyson was accompanied at Cafe Spiga in Mt. Sinai, usual site of the club’s regular noon meetings, by her parents as well as by Jen Quinn, Deputy Sup’t. of Schools, Mike Fama, JFK’s Principal, and Melissa McMullen, Alyson’s reading teacher. When considering who to nominate for this award, Ms. McMullen said that she carefully considered the meaning of the words “motivation” and “most motivated student” and decided that the concept must refer mostly to someone who is induced or finds incentive and is motivated from within. With this idea, Alyson immediately came to mind.
The teacher explained to the Rotarians that Alyson usually comes in to class smiling. However, one day this student arrived at the class and wasn’t smiling. When her teacher asked why she looked glum, Alyson responded that she had an argument with her mother before leaving for school and now felt the need to call her mom and apologize. Given the opportunity to do so changed this youngster’s demeanor back to her ever-smiling self. The teacher allowed that while schoolwork isn’t always easy for Alyson, this student always plugs away at her assignments. She always returns to the classroom and finds other students who can help her so that she is able to complete tasks and master the concepts required to move forward. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart
disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
(NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for
optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider
special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly
clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at
least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.
