Did You Know? While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Guardians of Rescue Finds Dog Struggling to Walk, Creates Medical Fund to Help Save Him

In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured. He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians of Rescue have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen. “This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch. We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.” Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam Bam. He was found alone and struggling

to move, but could wag his tail. The funds will be put to use providing him with the necessary medical technology needed to help him walk again, as well as help him receive the medical care he needs to recover from his other injuries, and be adopted out. Bam Bam will need a specialist in order to be able to walk again. During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care. “Imagine how frightened Bam Bam must have been to be hit by a car and left with injuries that made him unable to move,” Misseri. “One look at this dog, at how brave and determined he is to move around, and it’s clear that we have to do everything we can to help him.” Guardians of Rescue appreciates all donations, no matter what size they may be. Students Prepare 100 Meals to Go Congratulations to the students in Lauren Daquet’s Food Prep class at Islip Career Center. Every Thursday, these students prepare lunch for staff and students who place orders in advance, which gives them authentic restaurant experience. They organize incoming orders, handle the money, prep and prepare every meal under deadline pressure, and deliver everything as well. During a recent week, they produced more than 100 meals for the lunch rush,

which is three times more than the average Thursday. The class changes the menu each week to reflect what they are learning. The recent marathon rush incorporated sauces, such as marinara sauce for the chicken parmesan, a derivative sauce for the penne a la vodka, and a traditional béchamel to create macaroni and cheese. Said Daquet, “My students are working just as they would in a restaurant. It’s fast paced, it’s stressful.

They are focusing on teamwork, sanitation, time management; they are multitasking. They are training to not only work in a kitchen, but for any job that has similar demands.” Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that offers Special Career Education Programs, which provide skills training to students with special education needs. This training may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries.

THREE KINGS DAY - January 6 marks the celebration of the Epiphany, sometimes referred to as Three Kings Day, Little Christmas, the Baptism of Jesus, and Día de los Reyes. the real celebration of the holiday season does not begin until December 24 and then continues through Three Kings Day. While the four weeks preceding Christmas, also known as Advent, are supposed to be times of reflection and prayer in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ, the 12 days of Christmas are times of great celebration. On the Epiphany, children may leave their shoes out for presents in a similar fashion to the way stockings are hung. Gifts are exchanged, reminiscent of the three gifts the magi presented to the Christ child of gold, frankincense oil and a resin called myrrh. The gold

The holiday season begins with Thanksgiving, and many people believe that the festivities come to a close after ringing in the new year. In fact, for the faithful, the Christmas season does not end until January 6 (January 12 in Eastern churches). January 6 marks the celebration of the Epiphany, sometimes referred to as Three Kings Day, Little Christmas, the Baptism of Jesus, and Día de los Reyes. The Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after December 25. In fact, that is where the phrase the Twelve Days of Christmas, and the song of the same name, originated. Christians believe that

represented Christ’s royal standing. The frankincense marked Christ’s divine birth. Finally, the myrrh stood for Christ’s mortality. Many celebrants will bake ring-shaped cakes in which they will hide plastic baby figurines that are meant to symbolize Jesus Christ. The cake is called The Kings Ring, or Rosca de Reyes. delivered mail and packages unattended. You wouldn’t leave important items sitting on the front seat of your unlocked car overnight. So don’t leave your mail and packages sitting in mailboxes or on front porches for any length of time. 2. Going out of town? Hold your mail at the Post Office. You can sign up for Hold Mail service on usps.com if you plan on being away from

home for a few days. Your letters and packages will be held securely at your Post Office until you pick them up or request they be delivered to your home. 3. Plan ahead. Ship using Hold for Pickup. If you are sending packages, you can choose the Hold for Pickup option on usps.com. The packages will be safely held at the recipient’s local Post Office until they can pick

it up. If you are expecting a package, you can redirect it to your Post Office by selecting Hold for Pickup using Intercept a Package under Track & Manage on usps.com. 4. Customize the delivery. If you are expecting something you know will not fit in your mailbox and you won’t be home to receive it, you can authorize the carrier to leave it in a specified location. Visit

usps.com, enter the tracking number in Track a Package, and select Delivery Instructions. 5. Secure the shipment using USPS Special Services. Signature Confirmation helps ensure the package ends up in the right hands by requiring a first initial and last name at the time of delivery.
