After a gaining recognition as Suffolk Title I recipients with a win over Lindenhurst, the Longwood Lions captured the 2015 LI Championship Class I title when they defeated the Farmingdale Dalers 47-28 at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium. The team played under the guidance of their Coach, Jefferson Cipp.

Long Island Authors’ Circle A group of published Long Island writers has formed an organization to be known as the “Long Island Authors’ Circle.” The newly established ‘LIAC’ is currently composed of six charter members who have been published individually in virtually every fiction and non-fiction genre; from poetry and drama, to journalism and novels. The core group consists of four women and two men who hail from St. James, Northport, Dix Hills, Massapequa Park, and Smithtown. Their varied backgrounds include:
Town Councilwoman, Newspaper Publisher, College Professor, Literary Critic, Businessman, and Television Personality. Purpose of the Authors’ Circle is the exchange of information and ideas valuable to members in the execution and furtherance of their respective writing crafts. Communication is conducted primarily via email, though physical meetings are held when proposed and unanimously agreed to by the charter participants. Each of the core members may sponsor new
Long Island candidates for membership if they have been published. When unanimously approved, nominees are invited to join the organization. The “Long Island Authors’ Circle” has no mandatory meetings or dues; no officers, committees, or elections; no by-laws ... and participation in the group’s activities is at all times strictly voluntary. “We’re sort of like the free-and-easy ‘Algonquin Round Table’ established by Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and company,”
said celebrity biographer, Richard Grudens, and poet-dramatist-novelist, Charlene Knadle, agreed. “This sort of ‘loosely structured’ group is often the most successful,” she noted. I think guests were a lot happier with the service.” As the breakfast crowd began to thin out, the Moriches Rotary took the chance to share some happy news and announced the addition of two new members; Laura Traina and John
Gruber were applauded and congratulated on their acceptance into the rotary. Moriches Rotary and other community organizations help make Camp Pa-QuaTuck possible with their event coordination and sponsorship. Thanks to the support and participation in fundraising events, the camp is able to send several campers to summer sessions free of charge, so that they may enjoy a week-long vacation in a safe, encouraging environment. The campers engage in activities such as swimming, music and movies, socialization, sports, and visiting the petting zoo on camp grounds. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Santa came to visit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Sunday, December 13th, bringing with him the joy of the season – and pancakes! Everyone had a smile on, thanks to the green and red decorations and the pretty Christmas tree. While volunteers served breakfast, Santa and Mrs. Claus asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas and gave out candy canes. The fundraiser benefited Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a summer camp and weekend respite for children and young adults with extra physical and mental needs. Many families attended the breakfast, which was run by The Moriches Rotary Club and staffed by volunteer students from organizations like the Interact Club at the Center Moriches School. One young student, Isabella Burke, shared her experience as a waitress for the fundraiser: “It

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Community Housing Innovations (CHI) in launching the organization’s Fresh Start program. In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, this initiative allows the public to directly help the homeless through purchases of Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards through a special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. As part of the kickoff for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Startfunded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond® gift card, which he personally purchased as a gift. Mr. Bellone and CHI are encouraging the public to follow suit, especially during the holiday season. “The holiday season is an especially important time to realize that we’re all part of a larger family and we’re

all going through tough times,” said Mr. Bellone. “There are things that happen in life that create difficult circumstances and that’s when the community matters. The family signed the lease on the house in Bellport, New York during Thursday’s press conference with Mr. Bellone. The Harrises, who have been without a home for 14 months due to no-fault job loss and a sudden rent increase more than 30 percent, will move into their new house today, just in time to enjoy the holidays.
“It’s always hard to deal with homelessness; this is my first time going through this,” added Nathaniel Harris, father of the family. “It’s really embarrassing when you struggle even though you work so hard. I worked all of my life. So, to receive this opportunity, that somebody heard me, actually heard me, is amazing. I appreciate everybody who participated

LEADING IN THE PLEDGE - A Middle Country Central School District’s Bicycle Path Pre-K/Kindergarten Center class recently attended a Board of Education meeting to lead school staff and members of the community in the Pledge of Allegiance. Honor Society Inductions LEARNING THE DANGERS - Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently hosted a representative from the Suffolk County Department of Health, Ms. Ronnie Anderson, to speak to students about the dangers of smoking as part of the District’s annual “United We Stand for a Drug and Bully-Free Community” initiative. Ms. Anderson was welcomed by Idle Hour Elementary School Principal Mrs. Sandra Rubin and Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally to explain the impact of nicotine and the effects of tobacco on the body to discourage students from smoking.

My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…
I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me
a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait. Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. PJ COLLECTION - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School partnered with Scholastic Reading Club Pajama Drive to collect pajamas for families in local shelters. For every pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic will donate a new book to the shelter. Through the efforts of both students and the community, the school district hopes hundreds of children this holiday season can go to bed with a new pair of pajamas and a bed time story. RECIPE FOR LEADERSHIP - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 5th grade students recently prepared “Leadership Recipes” to promote the qualities necessary to make good leaders. Mrs. Malone’s 5th grade class worked collaboratively in groups to generate lists of the qualities good leaders possess. They used their list to create “Leadership Recipes” which identified the ingredients needed for being a great leader.

Candy Canes for a Cause
CLASS I CHAMPIONS - On December 11th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert presented Certificates of Congratulations to the members of the Longwood Lions football team. After a gaining recognition as Suffolk Title I recipients with a win over Lindenhurst, the Longwood Lions captured the 2015 LI Championship Class I title when they defeated the Farmingdale Dalers 47-28 at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium. The team played under the guidance of their Coach, Jefferson Cipp, and Assistant Coaches, John Murphy and Sean Kluber.
The holiday season is well-known for candy canes, and at Longwood Junior High School, candy canes are also known for raising money for those in need. Through the commitment and hard work of seventh grade students Trinity Miller, Kayleigh Mooney and Ayana Marsh, 800 candy canes were sold and more than $450 was raised in support of Longwood
families during the holiday season. “This fundraiser is a tribute to these three particular students,” said Junior High School Principal Adam DeWitt. “They came up with the idea and then gave of their time and energy in support of others. Their efforts show tremendous character and kindness.” Beginning December 17th–21st, the students’ sold the candy canes
during their lunch periods for $1.00 each; although any monetary donations were happily accepted. “All around us are people in need,” said Kayleigh. “I knew I wanted to do something to help those that need it most. I decided to start raising money here in my own community. Hopefully these efforts will continue to help others around the world.”
SCHOOLWIDE PLEDGE - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently pledged to promote a “drug and bully free” life during Red Ribbon Week. Students decorated the school with red ribbons, read books about the negative impact of drugs and participated in group activities to promote an inclusive, bully-free environment. Volunteers with special needs lent their helping hands at Camp Pa-QuaTuck on December 11th. AHRC workshop students checked off windowwashing, bathroom cleaning and general housekeeping duties from their to-do lists as they worked cheerfully for the good of the camp. Friday was AHRC’s second time working in tandem with the camp. Russell Smith, an instructor at AHRC, said the two organizations began working together via a suggestion from the camp’s
Treasurer, Newt Homan, who works for Suffolk County Transportation, transporting the AHRC students. Many of the volunteers have a personal connection with the camp, looking back fondly to the days when they attended summer sessions. “My favorite parts of camp were dancing, the talent shows and the camp fires,” said Crystal Concepion, a firsttime volunteer, who plans to return and help the camp prepare for winter in the coming weeks. Camp Director Bridget
Costello hopes to expand the volunteer program to former campers outside of AHRC to further foster the connection between camp and camper. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a summer and respite camp for children and young adults with physical and mental special needs. Since the camp hosts respite sessions and fundraising events throughout the year, volunteers are always needed for various events.
