Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 17th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. Some of the teams set to participate in the local regionals will move on to compete at the 2018 FIRST Championship in Detroit. Leading up to the regionals, SBPLI students will work with engineering mentors to apply concepts of math and science learned in the classroom to build their robots. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. Many SBPLI students use these skills while pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received millions of dollars in scholarships for higher education. This year, students participating in FIRST will have access to
more than $50 million worth of scholarships. “We are very excited to get our 2018 season underway and are looking forward to another great kick-off event,” says Larry Toonkel, newly appointed Co-Director, FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Long Island. “With two Regionals in the works, we know that this year will be an especially pivotal one for SBPLI and STEM education on Long Island. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in

Towards the close of the event, each team will then collect its kit of parts to construct a 120-pound robot over the six-week design and build period leading up to the FIRST Robotics Competition tournaments. Following last year’s record-breaking registration for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, the organization will now be hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates. In the meantime, Santa (who spends the rest of the year as a Cohen Children’s employee) spoke lovingly to the children who were accompanied in the playroom by Child Life staff members dressed as elves and other holiday characters. And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-to-room for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children. “We’re so happy that Cisco was able to bring their expertise once again to Cohen during
this holiday season,” said Patricia Ottavanio, special events coordinator at Cohen Children’s. “Thanks to them, we are able to bring Santa to the children. During this time of year, it’s very difficult for children and their loved ones to be away from home. Events such as these help make Chanukah and Christmas a happier time for these families.” Brian and Keri Adams, of Central Islip, joined their infant son, Derek, in the playroom. Watching with happiness as he banged on a little drum, Derek’s parents said: “This event makes children feel like they’re not in the hospital. We appreciate the effort being made by everyone here today to being Santa to our children.”

Christmas came a little early this year to the young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to the kindness of technical wizards at Presidio and Cisco Systems. Through the Cisco Santa Connection, patients who are unable to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes due to illness can still experience the magic of the holiday. Using a video monitor and web-enabled camera today, Santa “virtually” visited with children in the third floor playroom who were eager to discuss their holiday wish lists. The children, who were led to believe that Santa was communicating live from his home in the North Pole, deliveredw a list that ran the gamut from

Tapping into Coding During the month of December, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a collection of computer science activities in honor of the worldwide Hour of Code initiative. For younger students, the Hour of Code initiative acts as an introductory experience to the world of computer science, covering programming as well as an exploration of how coding technologies are present in everyday life. For older students, the district’s continued participation in Hour of Code provides them with an opportunity to expand their prior coding knowledge as they explore more challenging areas of the discipline. Elementary students throughout the district
learned about algorithms and how they act as a list of steps to complete a task. Utilizing Code. org, students engaged in interactive games that included creating their own lists of instructions to move a character through a computer-generated maze. At Wenonah Elementary School, fourth- and fifthgrade students chose to forgo recess and help kindergarten students as they embarked on their first coding experiences. Around other schools within the district, students participated in multiple “unplugged” coding activities, taking coding away from computers and integrating hands-on activities challenging students in other areas of coding.
Ozobots were incorporated into code lessons as students controlled the tiny robots through colorcoded commands written on paper. As student grade level increased, so did the level of difficulty in the coding challenges they faced using the Ozobots. Middle and high school students took on more advanced coding activities as they navigated through drag-and-drop coding tasks before breaking up into teams to compete in robot races using mBots. Students also programmed the robots to move throughout different mazes. mBots are an all-in-one educational robot that allows students to experiment in programming, electronics and robotics.

Members of the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) attended the annual Holiday luncheon at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore on an appropriately snowy December 14th! This business meeting and fund-raising get-together puts the retirees in the spirit of the holidays, and helps raise funding for the association’s May, 2018, Scholarship luncheon. The CRTA grants several $500 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at it’s scholarship luncheon. Knitting for Those in Need Tamarac Elementary School students in Deborah Allocca’s fifth-grade class in the Sachem Central School District acquired a creative new skill as part of a community service project to help a family in need during the holiday season. Each year, students in
Mrs. Allocca’s class give up their recess period to learn the art of knitting. Students work independently as they knit one square each that is then combined to form a large, multicolored blanket to be donated to a family in need. Students excelled as they surpassed their original one-square goal,
knitting multiple squares each. Eventually they incorporated multicolored designs into their squares. The blanket will be donated to a family adopted by Mrs. Allocca’s class, along with various other clothing items and toys for the holiday season.
Letters of Intent On Friday, December 15th, five Longwood High School student-athletes, along with their coaches and family, gathered to participate in a signing ceremony. The students recently signed their National Letters of Intent to play sports at the college level. Jake Murphy will be attending Long Island University/LIU Post to play lacrosse, while teammate
Robert Lopez will play lacrosse at Molloy College. Emily Koerick will attend New York Institute of Technology to play softball, and teammate Gabriella Vicidomini will play softball at Queens College. Jarred Vanderhoof will attend St. Thomas Aquinas College to play baseball. Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics Gina Curiale wished the students luck
in their transition into college athletics. “On behalf of the entire Athletic Department, we wish you all continued success as you participate in athletics on the next level,” said Mrs. Curiale. “We are all truly proud of you, and we look forward to tracking your achievements next year on the lacrosse, softball and baseball fields.”

In December of 2016 Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Antony Felicio, Jr., made a donation on behalf of the CTA to the BideAwee Pet Adoption Center after arranging to visit teachers at Connetquot High School. There was so much support for BideAwee and the little friends they brought along, that this year three adorable black lab puppies visited Oakdale-Bohemia and Ronkonkoma Middle Schools on December 15th. CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., presented a check in the amount of $200 to “…this wonderful rescue group located
in Westhampton, Long Island.” Felicio continued “… our teachers had a chance to visit with the puppies during some free time, to play and share their love with them.” Everyone present agreed that interacting with these beautiful puppies releases stress, and puts a smile on everyone’s face. The CTA would like to thank Beth Albert, Terry Mennona and Lauralee Flynn for helping organize this year’s BideAwee visit. After visiting the high school in 2016, and the middle schools in 2017, the plan is to have this wonderful rescue organization visit Connetquot’s elementary
schools in 2018! Members of the CTA agree that it is a pleasure supporting such a wonderful organization that does so much for abandoned, and abused, pets, and the families that adopt them. In keeping with the true spirit of the holiday season, Brookhaven residents opened their hearts in a big way by donating thousands of toys at the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. The event, held on December 15th, in the lobby of Town Hall, was cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau and JVC Broadcasting with on-air personalities
from all five JVC radio stations broadcasting live throughout the day. According to the organizers, it was the most toys they ever collected in one day. In an effort to enhance their scientific studies, first-graders at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti and Edith L. Slocum elementary schools recently received a visit from a Maritime Explorium representative for their “Wiggly Worms” workshop. Throughout the course of the STEM-oriented activity, students became animal behaviorists as they took part in
respectful, animal-friendly experiments to investigate the senses and reactions of earthworms. Within designated workstations, the students explored what components of the habitat provided worms with the most desirable living environment. The students were highly engaged as they discovered multiple factors which would impact the worms’ environment, such as their reactions
to different intensities of light, the types of soils and substrates most beneficial to their living situation, and how they responded in dry or moist conditions. At the end of the experimentation period, the students gathered around in a circle and shared their findings amongst one another, explaining the factors they found to be most beneficial and harmful to the worms’ environmental factors.

And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Multiple Connetquot High School studentmusicians were recognized for their participation in the 61st annual Senior High School All-County Music Festival, held
on November 17th at Hauppauge High School. These students were chosen to participate based on their high academic scores and incredible musical abilities. Connetuqot High School student-musicians and brothers Paul Foschino and Thomas Foschino were presented with tokens of appreciation for being named finalists in the Long Island’s Got Talent music competition. During the competition, both students performed Scholastic designed to extremely well and Paul’s support students love for talents captured him first place, which included a reading and writing. Gavin’s entry was so $1,000 cash prize, and extraordinary and full of detail that he was declared one of 10 winners throughout the nation, and he was rewarded with a copy of Pam Muñoz Ryan’s critically acclaimed Young Adult novel, “Echo.”

Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) was once again home to FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmages – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which brought science and creativity together on a robotics playing field. On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, twenty-nine teams from across Long Island competed in a friendly tournament-style scrimmage that prepared them for the upcoming season of FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world are asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponentcolored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions.
