Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact
entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because
I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

December’s Charity of the Month is:
Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.” If you wish to inquire about receiving help as well, or you want to volunteer and or donate to this organization, please contact their Development Director, Denise Waterhouse at DWaterhouse@OptionsCL.org!

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa. I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem. Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!
What You Will Need:
Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Thin chicken cutlets, pounded Liquid whole beaten eggs in a bowl Large bowl of Rice Krispies Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing Wash chicken cutlets and pat dry Dip each cutlet in liquid egg Roll cutlets in Rice Krispies bowl Place egg-dipped, Rice Krispies covered cutlets on 10x13 baking sheet Drizzle a generous tablespoon (or two) of Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing over the top of each cutlet Bake chicken at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club recently stopped by Edith L. Slocum Elementary School to engage the fifth-graders in a variety of leadership and team-building activities. During their visit, the high school students told the younger students of their personal accounts as they moved to the upper grade levels, which included more demanding schedules and the option to consider new clubs and athletic teams. Each of the visitors talked about how they learned to believe in themselves and continued
to work to reach their goals. Additionally, they took time to explain the many advantages of participating in extracurricular programs such as music, band and cheering, as well as sports. “Athletes Helping Athletes members visited the fifth-grade classrooms to share their experiences of overcoming obstacles, working hard and persevering through adversity,” said Philip Clark, Connetquot High School guidance counselor and AHA adviser. “This is the first of several visits that AHA will make to the fifth-grade classes at
each of the Connetquot elementary schools to promote confidence, leadership and value-based messages.” The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club has a large participation rate, with more than 60 serviceminded student members who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students. Connetquot’s AHA Club partners with Molloy College, and its advocates/mentors consist of caring professionals, including major-league athletes.
Foundation For Healthy Habits After several weeks of extensive training and preparation, students from Sachem High Schools North and East came together to educate sixthgrade students across Sagamore Middle School as part of the Teens as Teachers Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Program Club and course. During their recent visit to Sagamore Middle School, the trained peer educators facilitated interactive lessons on how to build self-confidence and resist the pressures to use alcohol and drugs. Utilizing the researchedbased Too Good for
Drugs curriculum, the trained student educators empower sixth-grade students with the skills to make healthy decisions that lead to a substance free life. “It is important for younger students to have positive role models,” said Elizabeth Reimer, president of the Teens as Teachers Club. “This course teaches students how to navigate middle and high school by making healthy decisions, managing emotions and setting positive goals to achieve.” The peer educators who participate in the program
will travel to each Sachem middle school as part of a four-workshop series educating sixth-grade students on these healthy strategies. “The sixth-graders are not the only ones who benefit from this program,” said Chairperson for Secondary Health Education Lori Hewlett. “The peer educators build valuable leadership skills, improve communication skills, build confidence and contribute to the success of fellow students. Our program has expanded by acting as a model which other school districts seek to emulate.”

Cracking the Case A mysterious student discovery prompted a second-grade study of bird eggs at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District. After a second-grade student stumbled upon a bird egg during recess earlier this year, students were determined to identify what type of bird the egg came from. In class, students began researching numerous species of birds found on Long Island and
compared their eggs to the one that was found. Students observed the egg and gathered information on the color, size and shape to make a prediction based on their research. Each class chose one type of bird it believed the egg came from and presented its reasoning to all secondgrade classes. Peter Walsh, the education director of the Seatuck Environmental Association, visited students and delivered
a presentation on the different species of birds found throughout Long Island. Students learned the essential characteristics used in identifying birds, such as their beak length and thickness and feather coloration. In addition, students explored different eggs from birds around the world, such as the ostrich. Students from both John Pearl and Sycamore Avenue elementary schools recently showcased their artistic and literary talents as they worked to promote safety as part of the annual Fire Prevention poster and
essay contest sponsored by the Bohemia Fire Department. As part of the contest, the students drew colorful pictures highlighting important fire prevention tips and wrote about a variety of
safety measure tactics. The winners of the contest were rewarded with a token of appreciation and gift certificate for their efforts.

Mathematics Honor Society Thirty-six Connetquot High School students were recently inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society on December 5th. Adviser Christopher Dolce introduced the officers of this prestigious group, along with Connetquot School District Director of Mathematics Louise Burger. Mrs. Burger welcomed the newly inducted members, as well as the proud family members and friends who attended the ceremony. The induction
ceremony was held in the appropriately-decorated high school cafeteria, and began with MAT officers addressing the history of the national organization, its purpose, as well as the history of mathematics. According to Mr. Dolce, membership in the Mu Alpha Theta chapter is quite selective for the more than 2,100 chapters across the United States and several foreign countries. During the ceremony, Mr. Dolce asked the newest members stand up and take the honor society pledge before distributing
the commemorative certificates to each of them. “I am beyond proud of our students and their achievements in mathematics,” said Mr. Dolce. “I would like to thank our entire team of math teachers, our director, Mrs. Burger, and the board of education for their support as we honor our outstanding mathematics students.” Following the ceremony, light refreshments were available for the members and their proud family members and friends.

Centereach Tree Lighting For almost thirty years, the Centereach Civic Association has celebrated their community with a Christmas tree and Menorah lighting. This year’s event took place on Wednesday, December 5th at 2100 Middle Country Road, across from the Suffolk Diner. Over the years this event has evolved and grown steadily! For about the last 8 years, various choral groups from Dawnwood Middle School and Centereach High School have performed at the event. The groups take turn singing Christmas Carols, Hanukkah songs and some miscellaneous songs chosen simply as a crowd pleaser. The attendance this year at this community event was record breaking! There
was an estimated 270 to 300 people enjoying the festivities. As the almost 50 foot tree was lit, a fire truck came around the bend with flashing lights and Santa aboard, who then went around to greet everyone! At the microphone throughout the night was Diane Caudullo, the Centereach Civic President. She encouraged everyone to take the time and look around, say hello to one another and realize that “by mere location we have become neighbors, but by choice we have become friends.” Although everyone certainly enjoyed the complimentary hot cocoa and fresh baked cookies served by Gerard and Lynn Donohue of JeJoJo Bagels and ate donuts
provided by Hilda Gonzales of White Castle, the true takeaway was good old fashioned holiday cheer, a sense of community and an unofficial start to what can be a wonderful but stressful time of year! This Civic Organization believes this is one event that truly brings the community together and they look forward to many more years of hosting it. As the night wrapped up, the younger kids were invited to take the microphone and sing their favorite Christmas Carols.
