In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five
counties outside of New York City. As part of the kick-off for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. school-age children, age five, 17 and 19, who have all been without a home for 14 months due to job loss and rent increases. “As we are all thinking about and preparing for the holidays, there are many families who are in search of a permanent home,” said Mr. Bellone. “Today, we had the opportunity to introduce a family to their new home and provide them with much-needed assistance in purchasing the items necessary to make this house a home. I applaud Community Housing Innovations and Bed Bath and Beyond for collaborating on the launch of the Fresh Start Program.” Community Housing Innovations, the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, has connected with Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards through the Bed Bath & Beyond special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. One hundred percent of this anonymous, taxdeductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties to purchase household items from the retailer. Donors will receive an acknowledgment of their contribution for tax purposes. “No family should have to spend the holidays in a homeless shelter, yet thousands of low-income New York individuals and families find themselves in that situation,” says Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “Our goal is to provide a $100 gift card to each family when they find permanent housing, but the public may donate whatever amount they like, starting at as little as $5.”

HOLIDAY CELEBRATION - Connetquot Central School District’s Alternative High School Principal Louise Burger recently brought together students, staff, friends and family for a very special Thanksgiving celebration. Students enrolled at the Eastern BOCES Regional Alternative High School program at Connetquot prepared a delicious, traditional Thanksgiving feast. Many of the proud students invited family and friends to join them for dessert, while others were pleased to bring the leftovers home. The students were practicing cooking as part of a home economics program to help students develop valuable life skills.

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council Advisors Mrs. Kenna and Mr. Cavanagh recently helped more than 15 students, 7-8 years-old, write letters to Santa for Macy’s National Believe Day. Students wrote their letters in class and parents were asked to donate one envelope and stamp to be used for the project. Members of the student council then stuffed the envelopes. Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter submitted by December 11th, 2015. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Cherokee Street Elementary School students have already submitted over 150 letters. Students wrote letters to Santa Claus to practice writing and raise money for charity. SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently. The medics presented the toys to the patients and their parents and were joined by Dr. Victor Politi, President/CEO of the NuHealth System/NUMC, as well as by Michael Mirotznik, chairman of the Board of Directors, during their visit. They pulled up to the main entrance of the hospital with Santa and the elves on a train followed by an ambulance.

Approximately 68 top spellers at Middle Country Central School District’s Selden Middle School recently participated in the school’s Annual Spelling Bee Championship. Round after round of increasing difficulty, the group of gifted spellers was narrowed down and the top three winners
emerged. Nikki Renelle brought home the first place award and was crowned this year’s Selden Middle School Spelling Bee Champion. Tristan Mazer was runner-up and winner of the second place award. Cristian Crespin rounded out the top three and was awarded third place. Selden Middle School
thanks all of the students who participated in this year’s Annual Spelling Bee Championship. Each student’s hard work and preparation shinned through, making this year’s event a truly fun and enjoyable one for everyone in attendance.
Named the Best Four students from the Middle Country Central School District recently received awards for their stellar performances in physical education during a recent congratulatory dinner held by the Suffolk Zone Alliance for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AHPERD). Each year, physical education staff from every school in Suffolk County nominates their best physical education students for this honorable distinction. This year, Melody Young and Andrew Farin from Centereach High School and Matthew Sharp and Jordynn Aiello from Newfield High School each received honors for being the best physical education
students in Suffolk County. Melody Young is the Fencing Team’s captain, fencing-2nd team allcounty, and accomplished a PE GPA of 100. Melody is ranked 1st in her class in academics, maintaining a 98.6 academic GPA. She is also the President of the National Honor Society. Next fall, Melody will attend Princeton University. Andrew Farin has a PE GPA of 100 and is a member of the lacrosse, soccer and winter track teams. Off the field, Andrew maintains an academic GPA of 96.9 and is a member of both the National and Spanish National Honor Societies. In the fall, he will attend Binghamton University where he will study biology. Jordynn Aiello has a PE

GPA of 98, is All-Division in both varsity field hockey and lacrosse and a volunteer coach with the Junior High Program. Academically, this student athlete ranks 5th in her class with a 97.2 GPA and has received honors from Minds in Motion and Academic All-American. In the fall, she will attend the SUNY Cortland where she will study Criminology and Psychology. Matthew Sharp was a member of the boys’ soccer team for two years and currently maintains a PE GPA of 96. After high school, he will attend Stony Brook University where he will study to become a chemical engineer.

Overcoming Adversity More than 300 Connetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School students recently learned how to overcome adversity by listening to Dr. Frank Saladino, a veteran music instructor in the District, talk about how he overcame the challenges of his early life. Dr. Saladino discussed how he was raised by his young mother, left a widow
with two children and no formal education after a fateful car accident. He spoke passionately about his family’s daily struggle to survive, his mother’s addiction to drugs and his stepfather’s abuse. Despite these obstacles, Dr. Saladino told the students he knew he had a choice; instead of choosing to use drugs or alcohol to ‘escape’ from his difficult life he chose to improve
his education in writing, music and poetry. When he eventually attended college he realized he was the master of his own destiny, which has helped him be a better son, brother, father and husband. The students were deeply moved and inspired by Dr. Saladino’s story to recognize the choices in their own lives to overcome adversity.

Tree Lighting Held The evening’s Memorial service was uplifting as the family of Anthony Caliguiri performed tree lighting honors. Mr. Caliguiri passed away while in hospice care in June and those attending shared memories of his life. The Fellowship
Reception that followed was a moving occasion with members of the Bellport High School Choir singing carols as hospital staff, hospice caregivers, patients, invited guests and community members joined in.

Guilds Support he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition
of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various
programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.
