Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certiﬁed”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so ﬁrst responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. Connetquot To Officially Unveil Renovated School Libraries Connetquot Central School District Board of Education trustees and administrators officially unveiled the district’s newly renovated library media centers at Connetquot High School and Cherokee Street, Edith Slocum, Edward J. Bosti and Idle Hour elementary schools during individual ribbon-cutting ceremonies, held on Nov. 19. The renovations were part of a 2019 communityapproved capital project. At each of the schools’ ribbon-cutting ceremonies, library media specialists provided a tour of the new surroundings, which included new learning centers, reading nooks, makerspace centers, updated technology and more. The high school library, which officially opened for student-use in September 2020, also includes a

tiered instructional area, quiet rooms and soundabsorbing tiles. Assistant to the Superintendent John Allen explained that school libraries are no longer just a repository for books but have evolved into multimedia centers for the entire school. “The idea of a library and it’s design has changed,” he explained. “The previous [library] designs did not align to the way the spaces are now utilized.” Director of English Language Arts Christina Poppe explained that the district’s library media center renovation projects have yielded studentfriendly, accessible learning environments. Every component of these spaces was designed with the students experience in mind. They feature a combination of the traditional and the flexible,

including accessible shelving, inviting furnishings and adaptable, adjustable learning spaces. “This fall, the district’s library media specialists were excited to introduce these spaces to students and staff and to open them for use,” Ms. Poppe said. As trustees and administrators visited each library media center, students filled out posters, prompted by the phrase, “Why I Am Thankful for My Library,” which included observations describing the new surroundings as “cool,” “has more space,” and “has new comfy chairs.” Makenzie from Idle Hour Elementary School said, “I am thankful for my new library because it gives us space to relax and be ourselves in book form, and it’s a huge difference from before.”
