My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,
becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by-54-foot playing field on which participants earned points by accomplishing set tasks. Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower – which resulted in extra points. The winning trio/ alliance comprised of Patchogue-Medford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks” of Cold Spring Harbor. The finalists were PlainviewOld Bethpage High School Team #353 “POBots,” Plainedge High School Team #527 “Red Dragons” and finally Wheatley School Team #2872 “CyberCats.” The Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to students, schools,

Connetquot Central School District’s Lego Club members from Ronkonkoma and Oakdale-Bohemia middle school showcased their engineering skills when RMS recently hosted Long Island’s First Lego League competition. The event, which featured more than 70 Long Island schools, involved hundreds of
students, advisers and volunteers. Sponsored by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, The Lego League competition is a technology-focused program for students that combines hands-on, interactive robotics with a sports-like atmosphere. Using the most advanced technology Lego has ever
produced, “Mindstorms,” students work to design, build and program a robot to compete on a table-top playing field. “This competition is a great way to promote Lego competition to families with elementary and middle school children,” said Anthony Carbonaro, Ronkonkoma Middle School Lego Club adviser.
Making Wishes Come True Students, faculty and staff throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently contributed efforts to ensure that the children of the Make-A-Wish Foundation could be provided with a happy holiday season. As part of Macy’s MakeA-Wish Believe campaign, students from Slocum
and Cherokee elementary schools helped to raise funds for the organization by putting pencil to paper and writing hundreds of letters to Santa. The students eloquently described their holiday wishes and deposited their original messages in a large holiday collection box at the school. For the initiative, Macy’s has

promised to donate $1, up to $1,000,000 to the MakeA-Wish Foundation for every letter contributed. Slocum Elementary School is hoping to exceed their goal of $500 this year and Cherokee Elementary School is working to exceed last year’s total of 425 letters.

It’s been a very successful season of giving for one Longwood student, who for three years has been doing his part to ensure that more children’s wishes are granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. After reaching out to students and staff throughout the District, sixth-grader Armanie Rivera collected close to 1,500 letters to Santa for the Macy’s Believe campaign. On Friday, December 9th, he delivered DRAWING CHAMPION - James Mauceri, a fourth-grade student at Edith L. the letters to Macy’s as part Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District, was recently of National Believe Day, named the winner of Newsday’s Kidsday Drawing Contest, which promotes the artistic raising $2,936 for Make-Acreativity of young students. James took the title of the best sports drawing for his age group, and was awarded with some wonderful prizes and accolades, including the opportunity for his drawing to be published in the December 31st edition of Newsday. Wish. For each letter collected, Macy’s donates $1.00 or up to $1 million to MakeA-Wish, the national organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. On National Believe Day, Macy’s doubles their donation. Born with a rare form of congenital heart disease, Armanie found out about the Make-AWish Foundation, which partners annually with Macy’s in its Believe campaign, when he had his own wish granted by the
foundation. Since then, he continues to volunteer and raise money to help grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Armanie’s teacher, Melanie Holroyd, explains that it’s a joy to see his excitement as gives back to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For someone his age to be so giving and compassionate by donating his time and energy for such a wonderful cause, is a joy to see, especially during the holiday season,” said Ms. Holroyd.

Hour of Code Elementary school students throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently explored the basics of the ever-growing industry of computer coding by participating in the internationally recognized program, Hour of Code.
At Sycamore Elementary, with the help of school math specialist Susan McInerney, students of all grade levels were able to sign into the program and learn about a global movement that reaches tens of millions of students in over 180 countries.
