Two librarians from the Sachem Central School District recently received awards for their remarkable contributions to literacy and learning during a meet and greet of the Suffolk School Library Media Association, on October 19th at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Sachem High School North librarian Madelyn Haussner received the 2018 SSLMA Outstanding Contribution to the School Library Profession Award for her efforts in leading SSLMA at both the local and state level. Haussner served as the president of SSLMA for the past four years and previously held positions as the vice president and treasurer. In addition, she is on the executive board for the New York Library Association – Section of School Librarians, which represents approximately 600 Suffolk County and Nassau County school librarians. Holiday Food Collection In recognition of the holiday season, staff and students from Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently came together to collect various food items to benefit less fortunate families of the Cherokee community. With assistance from Youth and Family Services
Coordinator Nicole Coogan and teacher’s aide Nicole Masi, the fifthgrade peer leaders were able to fill about 20 boxes to the brim with holiday essentials such as stuffing, pie crust and mashed potatoes. The school would also like to thank the teachers of Cherokee Street Elementary for donating enough turkeys
to ensure that every family has one to enjoy on Thanksgiving. Due to the generous number of holiday foods collected, all extra items are going to be donated to a local food pantry to benefit other families in need of a proper holiday meal.

Mel B: From Spice Girl to Survivor By Allison Kugel
Melanie Brown aka Mel B has reigned supreme as the spiciest of her band mates since bursting onto the entertainment scene as Scary Spice in 1996, with the group’s #1 hit Wannabe. She instantly began making headlines, and she never stopped. Her tempestuous marriages and some romantic near misses, including her split from Eddie Murphy heard ‘round the world, have at times overshadowed her on-camera talent on recent hit shows like UK’s X Factor and America’s Got Talent. In her recently released memoir, Brutally Honest, Mel opens up about her ten year marriage to exhusband, Stephen Belafonte, whom she claims kept her captive with multiple forms of abuse. She is finally speaking out and advocating for victims of domestic partner abuse, and she is excited about 2019’s Spice Girls reunion tour. Allison Kugel: After all you have been through, how are your spirits? Mel B: Obviously, I’m still on my healing path and it’s going to be an ongoing thing. I’m taking care of myself, meditating, doing my Reiki and eating well. I actually couldn’t be happier right now. I know there
are more happier times to come, but right now I’m in a really good place and it’s taken me a long time to even get to this place, so I’m thankful. Allison Kugel: Let’s go back a bit. What did the Spice Girls fame of the 1990s feel like for you? Mel B: It was tiring, but we really didn’t care because it was five girls together who had each other, living our dream life. We were living in England, struggling financially, not having much to eat, convincing people to let us borrow their recording studios so that we could sit down, and write and [record] our music. There was a phase of a couple of years where it was really tough. When we got to release our first single, Wannabe, and we signed with a record company and got Simon Fuller involved to manage us, it was really good, happy times that all five of us had dreamed of. We were traveling the world, singing, performing, dancing, writing music and making a movie. It was a really beautiful few years. Of course, we were tired, because we didn’t allow ourselves any time off. We knew that we had to soar through life like a big tornado and strike while the iron was hot.
Allison Kugel: What do you feel you came into this life as Melanie Brown to learn? Mel B: The number one thing is that I come from a white mother and a black father. Back in the 1970s when they got together and had me, that was seen as something that wasn’t really done. They had a lot of things that they had to overcome in bringing me into the world and raising me. I had to find my own identity. Apart from the likes of Neneh Cherry and maybe Tracy Chapman, there really wasn’t anybody that I could look up to where I felt like I belonged, or anyone who I felt like I even looked like. For me, it was all about creating a path where hopefully other mixedrace girls, and other mixed-race kids could actually follow. I do believe I am here, somewhat, to make it okay to be in the skin that you’re in. Allison Kugel: Obviously, the situation with your most recent ex, Stephen Belafonte, is extremely contentious. In general, how are you navigating co-parenting your three daughters with three different fathers in the picture?
Allison Kugel: After the abuse you experienced, are you frightened for your daughter, Madison, when you send her off to see your exhusband, Stephen? Mel B: All I can say is that I fought through the courts for her to have mandatory therapy every Saturday with a specialized therapist who is very aware of the situation. If there was anything for the therapist to be concerned about she would be able to flag it, based on the kind of intense therapy that she is doing with Madison. I have to trust and believe that if there was anything that I should be majorly concerned about,
Allison Kugel: I would imagine it took courage to keep a lot of the more explicit passages in your book. What was the hardest part, not just to write, but to keep in the final draft? Mel B: Everything that is out there now is pretty salacious, and I know it seems so random about the sex and the drugs I wrote about. The physical and emotional abuse had already kind of been out there [in the media]. I just wanted to make sure that I clarified and made my puzzle understandable. When you read my book, you do understand that certain things were due to coping mechanisms, which are very common with somebody that’s in an abusive relationship. The book addresses things like why it took me so long to leave. It’s because you’re trapped, and you don’t have friends and family because you’ve been isolated due to how your abuser does things. That’s why in the back of my book, I put the 15 warning signs of what an abusive relationship looks like. Sometimes we don’t know until it is too late, and you’re heavily in it. I want my book to be an education and insight into what it looks like to be in an abusive relationship. Allison Kugel: Why make the recent public declaration that your middle daughter Angel’s father, Eddie Murphy, is the love of your life? Mel B: One of the parts of the book that my friend couldn’t quite piece together was… why was I at my most vulnerable when my abuser came into my life. I’d just had Angel. She was two months old and then the monster came into my life. My friend and co-writer, Louise [Gannon], was trying to figure out why I was feeling so vulnerable. Then it became, “Oh, you felt vulnerable because of the Eddie situation, so let’s talk about that.” I wanted to be able to talk about it and express it. I didn’t even fully understand it when we started talking about it; what went wrong and how it all kind of fell apart. It was important for me to put it all down on paper and do it from my recollection. I needed to remind myself that I do know what a loving, respectful relationship is, because I had that and much more with Eddie. It was so important for me to put pen to paper with that, because I also had never spoken about it. I wanted people to know, and I wanted my daughter to know that it was a very loving courtship. It didn’t end well, but it was one of the biggest love stories of my life. Allison Kugel: You’re about to run off to a Spice Girls meeting later. Can you share?
Mel B: It’s about our 2019 tour. We put six shows up for grabs and we ended up doing thirteen because they sold out. We’re going to be talking about staging, choreography and our dancers. It will be all of us on tour, but without Victoria. She sends all of us her blessing, but she has always been adamant that performing is not really her thing. She’s busy with her family and her fashion empire. I still have hope that at some point she joins us, but as of right now she’s not. Allison Kugel: The Scary Spice of twenty years ago was brash and bold, and very tell it like it is. You were the tough girl. After everything you’ve been through publicly, with heartbreak and abuse and people seeing that you are quite vulnerable, who will Scary Spice be as you head out on the 2019 Spice Girls tour? Mel B: I’m still the same. A little more educated and more aware, and I would say more honest which could be misinterpreted as being even more brash and even more loud (laughs).

Mel B: My oldest is nineteen, so I had to do the every other weekend and certain weekdays for eighteen years. I’ve never said a bad word about any of their fathers to my daughters. Angel’s eleven years old and she sees her dad (Eddie Murphy) on a regular basis. She’s actually going to his house [this] week to do the family Christmas card, which is really lovely. My seven-year-old, Madison, that’s all happening through the courts, so that is kind of out of my hands. One thing I do with all my three girls, is I make sure they know that they’re loved, and that they came from a place of a loving relationship. Even though they didn’t quite work out, and me and their dads didn’t stay together, they all know that they came from a lot of love. One thing that is mandatory is that I always make it a very exciting thing when I send them off to their fathers.
I’ve got a professional right there that can spot it before I do.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
Leslie was referred by her Care Coordinator to receive Options Home and Community Based Services, HCBS. Her history included abuse by people in authority and makes her shy when meeting new people and unsure about anything new or unfamiliar. Leslie and her husband have been married for several years and as they’ve aged, they have developed some health issues. With minimal cooking skills, Leslie wanted to be able to prepare healthy meals for herself and
Leslie’s symptoms caused her such distress that she rarely left her apartment unless accompanied by her husband or mother. Even though her mother lives only a half a mile from her home, she has not walked there independently in 3-years. Leslie was determined to overcome her fear so that she could live a more fulfilled life…..go to stores, visit family and take an art class. For months, Leslie worked to become more familiar with the walking route to her mom’s. She gradually grew more comfortable and walked with an Options employee until she was ready to take the walk on her own. Leslie completed her first solo trip to her mother’s home and her family celebrated her accomplishment! They were so impressed by her courage that they became more involved in helping her achieve other goals. Now, with the support of her family, Leslie is applying for a gym membership and plans to work with her Options HCBS provider on becoming more fit and healthy. Leslie is less fearful of her community. She has learned that each small step brings her closer to the life she wants for herself and her family. When Patricia and her two siblings were growing up, her late mom, Ethel Henry, began whipping up this delectable confection during World War II. When the war ended and the whole family was reunited, their Red Devil Cake tradition continued. Patricia’s mom, Ethel, baked this cake for the entire family as her three children were growing up. As Patricia recalls, “My father loved my mom’s famous Red Devil Cake, and so did all three of us kids. You’re going to love it!”

Combine: 2 cups of sugar 1/2 cup of shortening (preferably Crisco) 2 whole eggs 1/2 cup of baking chocolate/cocoa 2 1/2 cups of flour 1 tsp of baking soda 1 cup of water 1 tsp of vanilla extract Mix until smooth. Spread evenly into a glass 10x13 baking dish and bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cool, frost if desired and enjoy.

Conversations with Masters For The Holidays The Holidays are a time of hope, love, joy and reflection. It’s a time to slow down, put our routines on hold and spend time with family. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have some time off, we are granted the best gift of all... the ability to be present with the people we love. The musical talents of 28 Sachem Central School District fourthgrade elementary school students recently shined during the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s 10th annual Parents, Educators and Kids Music Festival at Northport High School. Approximately 200 students from 32 Suffolk school districts were represented during the PEAK Festival where they participated in several musical workshops exploring areas such as world drumming, folk
dance, ukulele and bucket drumming, led by Sachem music educator Dr. Dylan Benson. The gifted studentmusicians shared these musical experiences with family members before the festival concluded, with a performance comprised of the top fourth-grade elementary musicians from Suffolk County. “The PEAK Music Festival is an excellent opportunity for students to perform music of all different genres and mediums on a grander scale than that of the general music classroom,”
said Laura Wasdo, Sachem chairperson for elementary music. “These experiences engage students in performances with hundreds of other peer musicians.” For the 10th consecutive year, Cayuga Elementary School music teacher Jennifer Fischer organized the festival. Music educators participating in the workshops are encouraged to draw inspiration from the activities they attend and incorporate elements into their own classroom lessons.

The Mindful Room As a means of finding inner peace and relieving stress, Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently opened up the doors to their “Mindful Room,” a soothing area where students of all grade levels are invited to visit throughout the school day to engage in healthy activities. In tandem with her health lessons, Youth and Family Services Coordinator Joanne Pisani conducts lessons and activities with the goal in
mind of promoting selfawareness and boosting mental focus for the students. Following the traditional mindfulness techniques, Mrs. Pisani leads the students in meditation sessions, as they practice such poses as “Frog,” “Crane” and “Lotus.” The room features a number of visual components as well, including inspirational quotes, a cascading water fountain, a soothing nature sound machine and relaxing bean bag chairs,
to name a few. According to the students, they’ve noticed improvements in their work habits and academic performance throughout the day after taking part in mindfulness sessions with instruction from Mrs. Pisani. The district would like to thank Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell for bringing this idea to life, and contributing her beautiful artwork to the room.

Sachem NYSSMA All-State Six distinguished student-musicians from Sachem High Schools North and East were selected to showcase their musical mastery during the 2018 New York State School Music Association’s All-State festival at the Rochester Convention Center in Rochester, New York, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. From High School East, students Timothy Demott and Ralf Jean-Francois will perform with the mixed chorus, while Rachel Sauer will perform with the symphonic band.
From High School North, students Morgan Tiller and Joseph Albano have been selected for the mixed chorus and Sofia Sangiorgio for the symphonic band. “Selection for the All-State performing groups is a rare honor earned by only the most talented, dedicated and hardworking students,” said David Jaklitsch, the chairperson for secondary music. “These amazing young musicians have worked at the highest possible level for many years and under many
teachers, studying both in and out of school to attain this accomplishment. We are all very proud to have these exceptional students represent Sachem as some of the best in all of New York State.” The selection process for an All-State musician is rigorous and includes teacher recommendations, audition scores at the NYSSMA solo evaluation festival during the prior spring and participation in other performing organizations.

This September, Sachem High School East Science Research teacher Dr. Michael Vaccariello was selected to attend the Society for Science & the Public’s Research Teachers Conference in Washington, D.C., to share best practices for supporting students in conducting original scientific research. As one of the 200 esteemed science research educators chosen from 1,000 applicants nationwide, Dr. Vaccariello had the opportunity to attend several specialized breakout sessions led by fellow educators aimed at assisting students reach their research goals. Among the sessions available were tips on
finding local mentors, helping students write scientific research papers, securing summer research opportunities for students and assisting students in the selection of research topics. “Research is a complicated process,” Dr. Vaccariello said. “It requires follow-through, perseverance, creativity and problem-solving, which leads students to cultivate patience, improve upon a positive attitude and engage in creative problem-solving skills in order to conclude their experiments in a successful manner.” In addition to the informational presentations, educators
gained further knowledge about world-class science research competitions such as the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search, which will feature the research of Sachem students this winter. “The Sachem Science Research program provides our high school students with invaluable experiences and skills for advanced professional degrees and careers,” Dr. Vaccariello said. “Throughout this process, students are introduced to more complex modes of thinking and analysis, and must stretch their intellectual talents. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to attend this conference.”
Icons of Freedom Symposium Connetquot High School students enrolled Christine Lennihan’s AP Government and Scott MacLagan’s Civil Rights classes recently attended the Icons of Freedom Symposium held at Touro Law Center in Central Islip on Nov. 30. During their visit, the students met with and engaged in constructive conversation with Mary Beth Tinker and Cathy Kuhlmeier, who were both
subjects of Supreme Court cases in the past. Mrs. Tinker served as one of the lead plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines, when she was a 13-year-old student who was trying to convey her message of student expression in protest of the Vietnam War. Additionally, Mrs. Kuhlmeier was the subject of the famous Hazelwood vs. Kuhlmeier Supreme Court Case in 1988, where she claimed

that her school did not have the right to violate her First Amendment rights by removing an article written for her school newspaper. This event served as the 50th anniversary of the landmark holding which is the basis for First Amendment rights in schools today. To this day, both women continue to work as advocates for students’ rights.

Technology, Literacy and Learning Fourth-grade students at Tamarac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District connected literacy and learning during a recent library lesson that utilized laptops in a unique way. Led by library media specialist Lori Capozzi, students connected a recent reading assignment with elements of technology. Students began reading the fiction book “The One and Only
Ivan” by K. A. Applegate and answered numerous questions about the story using Google HyperDocs. Students learned how authors incorporate descriptive language to appeal to all five senses of the reader. In addition, students examined how the choice of descriptive words can entertain, persuade, inform and educate those reading different forms of writing. Further creating a connection to technology,
once the students identified the main character as a gorilla, they then researched the animal to better understand the author’s inspiration for writing the story. As students’ progress through the activity they will be presented with additional questions to collaboratively answer with their peers using Google HyperDocs.
Restoring Local Waterways Last October, Sachem High School North students in Monica Marlow’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science class attended a field trip at Sunken Meadow State Park to monitor and aid in an estuary restoration. Working with Long Island Sound Study, New York Sea Grant, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Parks and Save the Sound since 2010, students collected baseline data prior to and have been monitoring the progress
since a dam was removed in 2012 to restore tidal flow to 132 acres of estuary habitat. Alongside agency professionals, students tested water quality and samples for organisms and caught numerous fish, including baby flounder, sea robin and blackfish. The presence of these species serves as a great indicator of the success of the restoration project thus far. “I see tremendous value in involving our students in this long-term project,” Marlow said. “It provides a memorable opportunity
to engage in hands-on learning and generate excitement for the AP curriculum, as well as help students take ownership and responsibility for our local waterways.” The students will be presenting their data at the Open Space Stewardship Program celebration at Brookhaven National Laboratory this spring. The conference provides students an excellent opportunity to interact with professional scientists and other motivated high school students in the environmental science field.

Author Empowers Students A longtime Sachem resident, author and retired educator Sal Nicosia recently visited fifth-grade students at Hiawatha Elementary School to share the importance of civic engagement. Author of the book “Empowering Our Children To Be More Effective in the Political Process,” Nicosia
is a passionate advocate for educating and empowering students to ask questions and be engaged members of the community. Mirroring the advice in his book, Nicosia answered several student questions such as how he became so involved in the community, how he began his career and his motivation to continue his
work. This November, in honor of New York State History Month, students engaged in social studies activities exploring the voting process, local laws and various areas of government.
