Christmas Tree Lighting

he Annual Davis House Christmas Tree Lighting was recently held in Coram. The Davis House, located at 263 Middle Country Road in Coram, was built in the 1750s and served as the site of the annual Town meeting in the 1800s. The house is a historic site in the Town of Brookhaven and was added to the NYS Historical Registry in September of 2000 and the National Registry in August of 2001. Pictured are some of the attendees with Santa.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldﬁsh quite like you.

EVOLUTION

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Think Bright, Do It Right Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia took part in several interactive skits performed by the school’s fifth grade Peer Moderators. On October 23rd, Ms. White and YFS (Youth & Family Services) Coordinator Mrs. Donna Leopardi, watched as students performed several anti-bully/anti-drug skits as a kickoff to the district’s

United We Stand For A Drug And Bully Free Community week. The 5th graders acted out the danger of illegal drugs, and the scourge of bullying. The performances demonstrated how being mean, verbally or physically, in a threatening manner is not only inappropriate, but hurtful, especially to youngsters. The audience was encouraged to speak up when they encounter

a bullying situation, not stand by, but try to get the attention of an adult who could help. Ms. White thanked the Peer Mediators and Mrs. Leopardi for the thoughtful skits, and the important messages they shared with their classmates. During Connetquot’s United We Stand week, district students renew their commitment to a healthy, drug-free and bully-free, lifestyle. PJ DONATION - Connetquot Central School District Idle Hour Elementary School students recently held a special Pajama Day event for a great cause. Students and staff members wore their favorite pajamas to school, and were also encouraged to bring in a new pair of pajamas to be donated to a local shelter for local families in need. “Pajama Day” was organized by Youth and Family Services Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally to teach students the importance of giving back to the community. Winter Gear Distribution On October 29th, Connetquot High School Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Brodsky, along with Youth & Family Services (YFS) Coordinators and students, continued the process of distributing Super Bowl gear throughout the district. 400 boxes containing winter wear, including a jacket, hat, scarf, gloves and backpack, were distributed to schools throughout the

district. The YMCA of Patchogue generously donated brand new Super Bowl XLVIII gear that was generated for volunteers who worked at last year’s Bronco’sSeahawks championship game hosted at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Mr. Brodsky thanked the YMCA organization for passing these colorful, warm, memorable, jackets for distribution to members

of the Connetquot community. Mr. Brodsky would also like to thank Assistant Superintendent Sharon Donnelly, Eddie Vaccaro, YFS Coordinators Ms. Baldi-Abbate, Ms. Monahan and Ms. Malinowski, along with CHS Assistant Principals Louise Burger and Mike Moran as well as the dedicated custodians, for all their support.

INTERACTIVE HISTORY - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently created shark teeth from plaster and rubber mold, carving scrimshaw - engravings done in bone or ivory - on them as part of the school’s interactive Native American history lesson. The school welcomed Christina Godfrey from the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences to speak to students about Native Americans and how they influenced the history of Long Island. TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION - The Annual Davis House Christmas Tree Lighting was recently held in Coram. The Davis House, located at 263 Middle Country Road in Coram, was built in the 1750s and served as the site of the annual Town meeting in the 1800s. The house is a historic site in the Town of Brookhaven and was added to the NYS Historical Registry in September of 2000 and the National Registry in August of 2001.

Four longtime SCOPE employees were honored for their dedication, commitment and more than 85 years of cumulative service this December as part of the SCOPE Employee Recognition Program. SCOPE Education Services is a not-forprofit, private, voluntary organization permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to provide services to school districts. During the annual event, the Board of Directors commended Suzanne Raulli (Internal Controller – 30 years of service), Betty Westcott (Coordinator for Professional Development – 20 years of service), Beverly DeSanctis (Account Clerk/Student Accounts – 20 years of service) and Josephine Giuffrida (Field Trainer – 15 years of service) for their hard work and service to the organization. As winners of the challenge, 11th grade students Ruojing (Jenny) Fang and Yunjie (Jack) Su will program satellite sensors that will collect scientific data and provide new information about climate change. The experiment will allow the collection of ground temperatures across all different surfaces, such as both oceans and land, as a function of existing cloud cover in realtime. The students will program sensors to detect cloud signatures as well as surface temperature simultaneously over one week, which should allow the entire Earth to be

examined. This experiment will provide important new data which can be used to further refine climate change models so future trends can be more accurately predicted. “I am especially excited about the satellite data that will be collected over ocean surfaces,” said Jenny. “Since data collection over ocean surfaces is uncommon, the results will provide valuable insight as to how ocean surfaces react to radiative flux and cloud cover.” Working in conjunction with Ardusat satellites, the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) challenged students to brainstorm ideas on conducting their own experiments using a real satellite in orbit. Criteria for judging the experiments included originality, technical feasibility, and proper use of the scientific method. “We have a great opportunity to collect

our desired data with our own codes,” stated Jack. “Through the collaboration of an innovative and dedicated team, we can interpret interesting results.” In an official statement, Ardusat President Sunny Washington said that the competition provides a unique opportunity to connect the universe to the classroom, and will spark increased interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-related fields. “We strongly believe that there is a direct correlation between making STEM education more engaging and getting more students involved in these critical fields,” said Ms. Washington. “The broad commercialization of space is opening up unprecedented opportunities to engage in space education and explore career options in STEM fields.”
