My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

On December 16th, all five JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All of the popular personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio 103.9, Party 105, La Fiesta 98.5 and JVC’s newest station, Oldies 98.1, will be broadcasting from the lobby at Town Hall. The event is open to the public and will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who stop by are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a child of a family in need as they open a gift during the holiday season. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys,

ranging from board games and dolls to toy trucks and bicycles. Supervisor Romaine said, “Thanks to our Youth Bureau, JVC Broadcasting and the generous residents of Brookhaven Town, so many children will enjoy a Merry Christmas this year. I urge everyone to come down to Town Hall, join in the festivities and donate toys for this great cause.” The INTERFACE Toy Drive is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau. Through raising donations, they will provide presents for more than 7,000 children in need, ranging in age from infant to 15 years of age. Donations can be dropped

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

LIFESAVER HONORED - At the December 1st Town Board Meeting, Councilman Michael Loguercio honored Ridge Fire Department member Daniel DeMeo for his heroic efforts to save a woman’s life while he was on vacation in Mexico. Upon observing the woman in cardiac arrest, Daniel proceeded to perform CPR, keeping her alive until EMS arrived to take her to the hospital.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

A Year in the Life of the Library innovative programming and so much more, the library continues its mission. The library strives “to impart a lifelong love of learning through access to educational, professional, and recreational materials in a variety of formats along with cultural and intellectual programming for all.” In addition to in-person registration, the library has enhanced the process to include online registration for both children’s and adult programming. For those unable to come inperson, this option was a welcome addition. The library has added three new passes to the Museum Pass Program, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the Guggenheim and the Fire Island Lighthouse. Along with these changes, library programs continue to increase in both content and interest. The children’s department saw the addition of Experience Pre-K at the Library, a first-time program

designed to give children the opportunity to learn early literacy skills and experience a “school setting” in a familiar environment. The increased role of the library’s Teen Advisory Board members has proven to be a valuable asset through the interaction of young patrons and the teaching of community participation. The children’s department continues to provide programming to the youngest patrons from Baby Steps to a Soldier Support program, for teens. During this program, students designed notebooks for soldiers overseas and packed over twenty care packages. With story time, games, art, cooking and more, all of the library’s children’s programs are designed to entertain and enrich a young mind. Throughout the year, the library continues its tradition of bringing out the best in local talent. On most Sundays, the library’s

community room is filled with patrons enjoying the best of music from rock to reggae, soul to swing and country to classic. From Sundays to the Summer Concert Series, the music only gets better. The library’s Afternoon Movies, with exciting and new releases, remains a favorite for patrons, along with the Family History Roundtable Series, Hot Topics in the News, Mindfulness Mondays and Book Discussions. With a continued emphasis on creativity, history, computer learning, health and well-being and more, the library’s programming cultivates awareness and encourages the desire to learn at any phase of life. The library provides vital information to seniors through the presence of HIICAP volunteers and a Senior Advocate from the Suffolk County Office of Aging. HIICAP, the Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program, funded by the Centers for Medicare

and Medicaid Services, provides information about Medicare, Medicaid and EPIC. The Office of Aging representative assists seniors with questions on healthcare, housing and more. For specific times, please refer to the newsletter or visit the website. On any given day, as you enter the library, you can hear the sound of children coming from the play area, see people playing games, studying or reading. You can see the staff, from clerks to librarians, working to enhance your library experience. Behind closed doors is a dedicated staff of people who keep the library running, from administrative services to the technical department, as well as the computer and maintenance departments, all striving to make your library experience productive and rewarding. A library has an important presence, not only in the local community but in the global one as well. What children learn in the

library can take them far beyond any boundaries. Nestled between the pages of heroes and heroines, intrigue and honesty, tragedy and triumph, you learn. Knowledge is the best currency there is, and its value never decreases. For the third year in a row, the library undertook an initiative, A Book on Every Bed. The library collected over 1,000 books for the Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start in Ronkonkoma, as well as St. John Nepomucene Parish Outreach in Bohemia. Thank you to the patrons for their continued generosity. As they conclude the year, they wish all the patrons a joyous holiday season and the hope for a Happy, Healthy and peaceful New Year. Longwood Middle School sixth-grade students recently attended an in-season practice of the New York Islanders as part of a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. Funded by the New York Islanders, the Future Goals Hockey Scholar program inspires student interest in STEM initiatives through the exploration of real life hockey concepts. In preparation for the event, students participated in online learning modules which leverage game-based simulation including, rates and ratios; states of matter; force and energy. In partnership with EverFi, the nation’s leading critical skills education platform, the Future Goals Program teaches important skills that help students prepare for success in life. Using the fast-paced, exciting game of hockey as a learning vehicle, the program helps students understand the real-world applications of science and math principles. “My experience at the Islanders practice was indescribable,” said sixthgrade student Cassie Edwards. “Being able to see the player’s practice was amazing, and seeing them doing the moves we are learning about with the EverFi program, made it even that much cooler.” In addition to watching the Islanders practice, the students participated in STEM trivia and joined in a panel discussion with Islander staff members who discussed how STEM closely relates to their chosen professions.

Hundreds of Connetquot High School students, spanning grades 9-12, worked together with faculty, staff, administration and community members to build important leadership and life skills during the school’s annual Freshman Awareness Weekend. During the overnight

event, which was hosted by the Connetquot Civic Club, students heard from a series of guest speakers and participated in interactive activities geared to promote leadership skills and problem-solving abilities. Coordinator Ms. Michelle Goodwin, and her co-adviser, Mrs. Cheryl Carr, helped to

facilitate this memorable experience as a means of promoting college and career readiness for the newest members of the Connetquot High School community.

Ridge Elementary School students recently participated in a special event to increase their knowledge about disabilities and foster positive attitudes about people living with disabilities. Coordinated by Ridge Elementary School Counselor Kristen Kopp, Disability Awareness Day provided the students with a unique opportunity to learn compassion and sensitivity when dealing with someone who looks or acts differently. To provide hands-on activities demonstrating the difficulties and frustrations someone with

a disability may experience in their everyday life, 13 workstations were located throughout the gym focusing on different classifications including, learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, speech/ language impairments and visual/hearing impairments. Members of Longwood High School’s Best Buddies Club volunteered their time and spoke about their own personal experiences with disabilities or the challenges they encounter living with family members with disabilities. Launched in 2016, the Best Buddies High School

Club promotes one-onone friendships between students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and those without a disability, within the school. “It was incredible to see the connection made between the high school students and our students here at Ridge,” said school counselor Kristen Kopp. “Whether it was during their time sharing personal stories or running an activity table, our elementary students were not only engaged but also heard some very powerful messages.”

Service to Community Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco presented a proclamation to honor the Excellence in Library Service Award winner Linda Accardi of the Patchogue-Medford Library. Accardi was given the award for her years of dedicated work serving the Patchogue-Medford area.

Lauren Nichols was presented a Proclamation by Legislator Calarco for her service to the community. Nichols was instrumental in reopening the historic Carnegie Library and has served as director of the PatchogueMedford Library since 2013. She is stepping down

as director of the library on December 31st. Legislator Calarco presented the proclamations to Nichols and Accardi at a General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on November 22nd at the County Legislative Building in Hauppauge.

Disability Awareness Day

Week in Review Connetquot High School students enrolled in English teacher Ross Castaldo’s Sports Journalism half-year elective course have recently been writing, producing and filming an end of the week wrap-up, titled “Week in Review.” This is an opportunity to update all faculty and students of news-worthy happenings throughout

the school. Connetquot High School junior Maggie Gioia and sophomore Joe Savino, both aspiring journalists, have been serving as the news anchors since the broadcast’s inception in mid-November. They will be continuing this effort through mid-January, when a new group of newscasters will take over for them.

“This is a great opportunity for the students,” said Mr. Castaldo. “The biggest reward that the students will be able to take out of this is that they’re getting the hands-on skills required to be a news reporter, and none of this would have been possible without Christina Poppe, our district director of English Language Arts.”

SOCCER TEAMS HONORED - At the December 1st Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle recognized the accomplishments of the Newfield High School varsity boys and girls soccer teams. The girls’ team was only three seasons removed from the Developmental League and made it to the playoffs. The Varsity Boys Soccer team had a historic season in 2016 as it captured the Suffolk County League III Championship, its 9th in school history. The team then went on to win their next three playoff rounds to be the first Newfield soccer team in school history to make it to the Suffolk County Finals. The team finished with a 12-1-1 league record and a 16-2-1 overall record, 48 goals for and 15 against, with 9 shutouts on the season. The team finished as the #2 overall team in Suffolk County and the #6 ranked team in the state, both are records as well.

The applications were submitted by The Patchogue Theatre For the Performing Arts and The Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association. Once a thriving mill town, Patchogue faced years of economic hardship as retail shops and restaurants faced pressures from surrounding malls and big box stores. Over the past decade, however, Patchogue Village has seen a renaissance unlike any other downtown in Suffolk

County because an alliance of business owners, arts organizations, non-profits and local government worked together to grow Patchogue’s historic main street with new restaurants, small businesses, and housing. The revitalization efforts began when a grant was made to support the Patchogue Theatre For the Performing Arts and grew as more money was secured to support the village. The Village of Patchogue was able to leverage monies from federal, state, county, and local sources to support new restaurants, retail, and housing projects that has

enhanced the local tax base and further encouraged small business growth. “I want to thank the Downtown Citizens Advisory Panel for recommending these important projects for our community,” said Legislator Calarco. “The revitalization of Patchogue began with the Patchogue Theatre and I am proud to continue to support this great institution. Patchogue has come a long way in the last decade and it is because we have supported our arts and community organizations” Medford Memorial Park has become the center of the Medford community

in recent years. The park is the home of many popular community events like the Medford Concert Series, which Legislator Calarco has sponsored for the last five years, and the Medford Christmas Tree Lighting. The new pavilion will save money on future concert series events and will allow more community events to be held in the park. “Medford Memorial Park is the home to so many fantastic community events and gatherings. The new pavilion will further enhance this already great park and our community,” said Legislator Calarco.
