The Annual Service Fair sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES provided hope to parents, and information to social workers and mental health staff. ESBOCES School Social Worker Jennifer FarnumWeber said, “The fair allows parents the ability to have more control over what programs their children are involved with. With
over 50 vendors, we hope they can find programs that relate to their children’s passions and they can make connections for future support.” A parent of a 16 year old with autism from Northport found out about the Service Fair from her SEPTA group. SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association. She shared
that she came to the fair to get help on what to do next. “The paperwork is overwhelming,” she shared, asking that her name not be used. “I have so many questions - Do I get Medicaid first, how do I get services for my son, what agencies should I talk to for respite care.” A social worker interning at Central Islip attended the fair on the advice of his field supervisor. He thought the fair was very beneficial allowing him the opportunity to collect information in one place and fill up his “tool box” with resources and information on new and improved services that agencies may be offering. Farnum-Weber said, “We host the fair every year to give mental health staff and parents the opportunity to meet a wide-variety of service providers so everyone can prepare for the future.”
STUDENT OF THE MONTH - On December 5th, Councilman Kevin LaValle visited Sachem North High School in Ronkonkoma to honor Student of the Month Billy Aumick. In addition to being a strong student academically, Billy has been involved in hockey, football, lacrosse, and wrestling throughout the years. Students Recognized Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended a special awards program at Our Savior New American School in Centereach. Last spring, five of Ms. Josette Leon’s 11th grade History Honors students participated in the New York State Student Research Award competition. The goal of their extensive research, which included a visit to the office of Brookhaven Town Historian Barbara Russell, was to learn about the
Selden Telescope Hill Fire Tower, which is no longer in existence. The honor students created a website that provided historical information about the tower, some of which they shared at the ceremony. After presenting the students with Certificates of Recognition, Legislator Muratore called School Principal Dolores Reade up to the podium to thank her for 25 years of service at Our Savior. He presented a special proclamation to commemorate the event.

And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and
tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. He made it a point to mention that he loves work so much that he could wake up at 7 a.m. and work until midnight, and do it all again the next day without a problem. Anthony Scotto’s newest business venture, One North, a Mediterranean style restaurant located at the old Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, is nothing less than exquisite. This historical building sat empty for just about 10 years when, finally, local residents reached out to Mr. Scotto to ask if he was interested in renovating the building and opening a new business there. Two and a half years later, Mr. Scotto had it completely revamped, and it now looks better than ever! One North offers a unique and tasteful menu, which Mr.
Scotto assisted in creating. It has a modern décor, which was inspired by European coastal living. A mozzarella bar creates a cozy setting near the kitchen; beautiful private event rooms are available to rent out; and you’ll never be left cold on their patio, which holds multiple heaters and a luxurious fireplace. In the spirit of giving, Anthony Scotto donated $75,000 from his first week in business at the new location to the following charitable organizations: Heroes To Heroes Foundation, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He knows what it means to struggle and feels that everyone has a duty to help the less fortunate. It was nothing less than obvious, upon speaking about helping those in need with Mr. Scotto, that he truly has a generous heart. After all, money can come and go, but generosity from one to another can never be taken away.

In the Spirit of Giving... Anthony Scotto donates $75,000! Anthony Scotto, one of Long Island’s most successful entrepreneurs, understands more than just business – he understands the importance of giving. Mr. Scotto immigrated to the United States from a fishing village in Monte di Procida, Italy when he was eighteen years old. Once in America, he went to work for his uncle in Brooklyn at Romano’s Restaurant as a dishwasher. As someone who always felt that “work was a good thing,” he wasn’t afraid to work hard. As an immigrant, Mr. Scotto felt a great hunger to do something, so he progressed from washing dishes to cooking meals to eventually venturing off with his two brothers and opening Scotto’s Pizzeria. INTERFACE FOOD DRIVE - This year the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Thanksgiving Food Drive provided more families in need with hearty Thanksgiving meals than it ever has before. Through the drive 942 families and a total of 3,912 people in need in Brookhaven Town received a Thanksgiving Day meal. Last year the drive provided Thanksgiving meals to 823 families in need.

The Leader in Me is a program that provides students the opportunity to organize a service learning project that will contribute to the community. Each proposed project is presented to students and staff before implementation. The student duo worked together to create flyers and announcements to promote the Kicking for a Cause drive throughout the building. The fundraiser provided students across all grade levels an opportunity to synergize and work toward a common goal while having fun. “With the Leader in Me
program our students have developed valuable skills such as leadership, communication, empathy and teamwork, all of which have contributed to a school culture that values project-based learning, goal setting and critical thinking,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “All of the students learned a valuable lesson about contributing as a community.” As a result of the school’s generosity, hundreds of items were donated to the cause. At the conclusion of the drive, Michelle Nelson’s kindergarten class, Peter Gentzlinger’s first-grade class and Lorraine Alvarez’s fifthgrade class were presented with trophies donated by Port Jefferson Sporting Goods to be displayed in their classrooms as the three winning classes.

Two Merrimac Elementary School siblings in the Sachem Central School District went above and beyond as they organized a kickball tournament aimed at collecting nonperishable food items and cleaning supplies to donate to the nonprofit organization Island Harvest, benefiting those affected by the devastating hurricanes Harvey and Irma. As part of the Leader in Me program, third-grade student Gabriel Nagel and fifth-grader Sarah Nagel organized the engaging benefit to involve all students of Merrimac Elementary by creating friendly competition amongst classes. With help from gym teachers Robert Romano and Nicole Kessinger, the drive was arranged so that every two days each class’ donations would be tallied to arrive at that class’ total score. Pledging for Peace Students across grade levels at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently attended a special assembly promoting peace throughout their school community and beyond. They helped to plant seeds of kindness as they wrapped daffodil bulbs in peace pledges that were planted in front of the school. As part of the character education curriculum, each student at Waverly Elementary School was asked to write an essay
on what peace means to them. Then, during the assembly, several students were selected to read their essays to fellow classmates, allowing the students to reflect on the ideas of their peers. Continuing the connection to promoting peace throughout Waverly, the students organized a fundraiser to benefit the nonprofit organization The Team Jesse Foundation, which provides education and support to families of fallen soldiers in honor of SSG Jesse Williams. The
students sold Team Jesse bracelets and raised $400, which they presented during the assembly to the parents of Kevin Mincio, founder of The Team Jesse Foundation. To conclude the event, all students wrote pledges on how they can make Waverly Elementary a better place. They then walked outside the school to plant daffodil bulbs that will bloom beautiful flowers in spring, reminding each student of their promises to promote peace.

officers lighting candles representing scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. A reception honoring the inductees and their proud families was held in the cafeteria following the ceremony.
COLLECTING FOR CHARITY - The Connetquot High School Future Teachers of America Club recently spearheaded a bake sale fundraiser in order to purchase toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation and pajamas to donate toward the Scholastic Book & Pajama Drive. Sharpening Business Skills Connetquot High School National Business Honor Society members took part in Adelphi University’s Apprentice Challenge, joining more than 240 of Long Island’s top business students as they worked with expert business faculty and marketing professionals to
sharpen their skills. Throughout the event, students learned essential and relevant marketing components, including the four P’s (price, product, promotion and place) and how to successfully create a marketing plan. The students then tested their skills and worked
collaboratively in teams to develop a marketing plan based on a sample case assignment. Based on their efforts, the one team that created the most successful marketing plan was awarded the coveted title of the “Adelphi Apprentice.”

Alaskan Travels In an effort to enhance their literary skills and learn more about cultures other than their own, third-grade students in Diane Boccio’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently sent and received letters from pen pals at Ninilchik School, a K-12 school located in Ninilchik, Alaska. The Connetquot thirdgraders included factual information in their letters
to their pen pals, such as what activities they take part in after school, their favorite television shows and how many family members live in their household. In response, the students from Ninilchik stated that they enjoy the same television shows and have a similar family structure. But a vast difference in their home state, as they often see wild moose and caribou roaming around, along with the fact that
there are two active volcanoes located near the school. Additionally, the Ninilchik school contains a grand total of 132 students K-12, as opposed to the 224 students in John Pearl Elementary consisting of grades K-5. As an addition to their literary activity, the students were shown the geographical location of Ninilchik via Google Earth, and were able to make note of geographical similarities and differences.

The Middle Country Public Library has been selected as one of America’s Star Libraries for 2017. This designation puts the library in an elite group of 13 libraries nationwide to receive a five-star rating 10 consecutive years as Library Journal’s America’s Star Libraries. This year marks the 10th edition of the Star Library Ratings and the LJ Index of Public Library Service, sponsored by Baker & Taylor’s Bibliostat. The LJ Index compares U.S. public libraries based on per capita measures of service output. Measures used for rankings include circulation, library visits, program attendance, public Internet computer use and circulation of electronic materials, which all contribute to a library’s LJ Index score. “We are honored to receive the prestigious designation as one of 13
libraries nationwide to have earned five Stars in all 10 editions of Library Journal’s Star Libraries.” stated Middle Country Public Library Director Sophia Serlis-McPhillips. “Our mission is to enhance our community’s quality of life, striving for excellent customer service, consistent community engagement and collaborative work with local and national organizations to enrich our community.
