All Sales Are Final By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not a fan of shopping lists. My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

25% off, free shipping and, oh, let’s throw in something free along with it, less. The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Next, we have Animal Kingdom where you can take a safari ride to see all of the animals from A-Z.

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Personality Of The Month

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men’s Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December. Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the National Championship last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment. Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-4-0 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on November 14th.

A twelfth minute goal by Romario Hulea was all the Sharks needed to avenge their 2013 loss to Herkimer in the National Championship game and advance, 1-0. The Sharks continued as underdogs in the national title game on November 16 against number two seed Richland Community College from Texas, who previously defeated them 5-2 in September. Joseph Lopez and Hulea scored for the Sharks and goalkeeper Jon Zapata, named championship game MVP, made six saves in the second half to preserve Suffolk’s 2-1 lead and secure the championship title. Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said Coach Vertullo is an inspiration not only to student athletes, but to the College Community. “Coach Vertullo’s leadership, inspiration, and ability to motivate has helped deliver two National Championships to Suffolk County Community College by our very talented and accomplished student-athletes,” McKay said. “Congratulations,” he added. “There are so many factors that are involved in winning multiple national championships. Consistency, recruiting, experience and creating a family atmosphere within the program are the key components. The success of the program has also helped in the recruiting process of potential student-athletes wanting to leave home to play at Suffolk even without the convenience of campus housing. However, just bringing in talent is not always good enough, ” Vertullo, who was named Coach of the Tournament, said. “My student-athletes have always given me 100% and have done everything I’ve asked of them. The family

atmosphere we create makes the student-athletes want to perform for one another and they hold each other accountable. They also draw on my experiences from coaching in eight Final Fours in the last 14 years. Each year, we pull positives and negatives out of each Final Four experience and bring that into the next year’s tournament to further be prepared and to put the student-athletes and the program in the best possible position to succeed,” Vertullo said. As a player, Vertullo played in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), for the North Babylon Bulldogs and Massapequa TNT. Frank also competed for three years on the LIJSL Select Team and two years on the Eastern New York ODP. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003. Vertullo served as Dowling’s assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship. Vertullo took over the Suffolk Community College men’s program in 2007 and has led the Sharks to five Region XV titles and two National Championships, been honored as Region XV Coach of the Year four times and NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2010. Vertullo also won the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award in 2008.

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Mohammad Rana and Biology Club students from its Long Island Campus received citations from Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, declaring November 19th as “St. Joseph’s College Biology Club Day” and “Dr. Mohammad Rana Day” in the Town of Brookhaven, New York. On October 29th, SJC staff, students and faculty held a meeting with Village of Patchogue, Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County and Department of Environmental C o n s e r v a t i o n representatives to discuss the invasive vegetation that chokes the waters of the Patchogue Lake. The SJC Biology Club, along with Dr. Rana, presented research and solutions

to clear this troublesome plant life from the Lake. As a result, government officials vowed to assist in the clean-up process. “I recently announced that I am joining the efforts of the St. Joseph’s College Biology Club in clearing trash and debris from the Patchogue Lake,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “The Town and Village will provide work crews to assist and we all look forward to working with the College regarding these ongoing concerns.” On November 19th, Village of Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri and Supervisor Ed Romaine visited SJC to reassert their commitment to clean up the Patchogue Lake. Employees from the Village of Patchogue will begin the clean-up on the south side of the Lake and

employees from the Town of Brookhaven will begin on the north side. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys ranging from stuffed animals, board games, dolls, toy trucks and bicycles. The event runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is open to the public and those who stop by are asked to donate a new unwrapped toy to help

bring joy to a family in need. Junior Division Champs On Sunday afternoon, November 23rd the SYAG junior division ‘Oregon Ducks’ football team completed an undefeated season of competition by defeating the ‘Avengers’ in the annual ‘Super Bowl’ championship game. The Sachem Youth Advisory Group (SYAG) ‘Super Bowl’ Championship game was played on the beautiful artificial turf field at Sachem East High School. Coach Phil Maniaci and his staff went into the championship game undefeated, with a record of 9-0. The Avengers’

tenacious defense, and swift running backs, kept the game close early, but the final score of 35-12 secured the championship and an unblemished record for these 7-8 year old Oregon Ducks! The 2014 Ducks have demonstrated tremendous intensity, pride and sportsmanship all season long. The coaching staff is to be congratulated for their work with these youngsters. They have done a wonderful job of teaching these 7 and 8 year-olds the skills to appreciate the game of

football, while emphasizing sportsmanship and respect for their opponents. The coaching staff thanks the players for their hard work and dedication this season. The staff would also like to recognize the parents, grandparents and friends that followed, and encouraged, the boys all season long. Collecting Candy For Troops

To show their gratitude and support for the dedicated men and women actively serving our country overseas, seventh and eighth grade students at Longwood Junior High School collected candy for Operation Gratitude. “With only two days’ notice, the students collected more than 70 pounds of candy to show their appreciation for those who sacrifice so

much for our freedom,” said Longwood Junior High School Social Studies teacher Herman Rohan. “I am so proud of the philanthropic actions taken by our students.” Operation Gratitude annually sends more than 150,000 care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to new

recruits, veterans, first responders, wounded warriors, caregivers and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas. Their mission is to lift spirits and meet the evolving needs of our active duty and veteran communities. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than one million care packages.

Council Honorees The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) recently held its Champions of Children 29th Anniversary Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The event honored two Long Island champions: New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney and John A. Rizzo, economist, the Long Island Association, and professor of Economics, Stony Brook University.

Two Longwood High School senior student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their athletic and academic careers at the collegiate level. Leah Mele recently signed to play softball at C.W. Post where she will pursue her studies in health science. As a dedicated student-athlete, Leah is a five-year starter who played an integral part of the team’s success in winning their first-ever Suffolk County Championship title. Leah has earned numerous awards including Rookie of the Year, All-State Player and All-Long Island Player of the

Year. “For the past five years, Leah has been the heart of our softball program,” said Coach Jackie Legnon. “After participating on various elite baseball teams, Leah made the switch to softball in eighth grade; she has been a dominating force ever since. up his wagon, and sold the goodies to people at his mother’s job. In the end, Bobby raised almost $300! Bobby, along with his parents, joined Dr. Scriven and members of Stony Brook Medicine to show their gratitude to the hospital and presented a check which will be contributed to the Children’s Hospital and the Child Life Program.

Migraine Facts And Treatment Tips (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. (NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your

Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know. Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address. • Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.
