Dreidels are especially popular during the eight-day Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of

the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”

Lewin’s Farm has continued a wonderful tradition that has been going on for nearly twenty years. On November 25th, the farm donated all of their remaining produce to local food pantries and soup kitchens! Over the years Lewin’s has donated over 250,000 pounds of food and this year The Rocky Point Rotary Club

ROCKY is an approximately 12-14 year old male German Shepherd mix. Sadly, Rocky and his two siblings (Cali and Suzie) found themselves orphaned when their dad passed away. This sweet old fella deserves the chance to live out his days in a warm home with a loving family. Rocky has significant arthritis and hearing loss. While Rocky does get along with his siblings, he should be the only pet in the house, if adopted without them. He adores being the object of attention and being around people. We would love to see Rocky adopted or in a permanent foster home in time for the holidays. If you are interested in meeting him, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs and our Dog Walk trail.

New Toy Donations Needed to Help Those in Need

Mariposa Family Assistance Program, located at 782 Larkfield Road in East Northport will be holding a toy drive on Thursday, December 10th from 12-5PM. They are a community based organization with a goal to support all families in need, regardless of religion, race or financial status. Recently they accumulated donations for victims of a multi-family house fire in Islip Terrace. They regularly receive

donated gently used clothing, toys, books and essential baby items to give away monthly. Between March and August of 2020, they had 8 giveaways a month to supply a vast number of people in need and contributions poured in from community members! Mariposa is now seeking new toys for children (infants to 18 year olds) in our community. They normally put bins in stores and display a Christmas

tree with names of those in need in local nail and beauty salons, however, this year is different and they are having a difficult time. They are in need of help, so if you can, please drop off a new unwrapped toy at their Drive Through Toy Drive on Thursday, December 10th from 125PM (they are located just south of Savers on Larkfield Road). Local School Scores Touchdown With New York Jets Alumni

The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) was recently joined by New York Jets alumni, Tony Richardson, for the presentation of a $5,000 grant award from the New York Jets & American Dairy Association of the North East to be applied towards the district’s lunch program financing. “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to provide our students with increased access to healthy lunches, a districtwide goal that has been made much easier with the generosity of our friends at the New York Jets & American Dairy Association of the North

East,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, superintendent of schools. “It’s so important, now more than ever, that our students have access to healthy food options to remain healthy, focused and engaged. As a district, we place a heavy emphasis on promoting health and wellness, and this grant provides us with a tremendous opportunity to do both.” In September, Middle Country’s District Manager for Whiston’s Culinary Group Laura Gaglione, applied for the grant with a vision to address food insecurities that students in the district face and to promote health and wellness for students’

development within the Middle Country school buildings. Tony Richardson, the New York Jets & American Dairy Association of the North East and Whiston’s Culinary Group representatives joined Centereach High School and Newfield High School students, principals and coaches, as well as district and community leaders for the socially distant presentation of the grant. Many students had the opportunity to speak with Tony Richardson, learning about his years playing professional football and his motivation to help promote nutrition in schools.

Deliver Delicious Brisket For The Holidays Beef brisket is a relatively inexpensive, yet highly versatile cut of meat. It’s equally at home in a pastrami or corned beef sandwich as it is on Christmas and Chanukah holiday tables. When cooked correctly, brisket is tender and delicious. Brisket comes from the area of cows or steers ages two and up, or veal ages two to four months, according to the recipe and cooking technique resource Food Fire Friends. The brisket can be found right above the leg in the area between the front legs. Brisket is essentially the lower chest, or pectoral region of the animal, responsible for holding up the weight of the cow. As a result, this is a dense and tough muscle area with a lot of connective tissue. Thanks to its density, brisket requires long cooking times at relatively low temperatures to produce a tender, boldly flavored beef dish. Brisket is best smoked or braised, which means simmered in a small amount of liquid. Most briskets will have a layer of fat on the surface. Better Homes and Gardens magazine says that this should be sliced away before preparing the brisket. Try using brisket in place of a rump roast in this recipe for “Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce” from “CrockPot® 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from The Crock-Pot Kitchens. Keep in mind that brisket will require long cooking times in a slow cooker and may need to be cut in half to fit into the pot. Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce Makes 6 servings

1 beef rump roast or beef brisket (about 3 pounds) 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup dark rum, divided 1⁄2 cup beef broth 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 whole bay leaves, broken in half 1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 1⁄4 cup lime juice
