I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt… Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

Sponsored by the Middle Island Teachers Association in conjunction with First Book, the event provides educators, church groups, day care providers, scout leaders, PTA members, civic groups and community members with brand new, free books for children. There will be a large assortment of brand new books available ranging from preschool to high school. Individuals are welcome to choose up to 15 books and educators can choose up to 50 books. Through the National Book Bank program, First Book connects publishers with local schools and community programs serving children in need. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,

include playing video games and streaming on Twitch. Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. Character Education Social workers at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Westhampton Beach Learning Center organized Character Education Day and invited retired military personnel to participate in the event. Members of the United States Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Army were present. The veterans presented Character

Education certificates to the special education students. After the assembly, the students visited the local American Legion Hall located in Eastport. In order for students to receive the Character Education certificates, they had to, on a consistent basis, portray citizenship and caring for those

around them. School Social Worker Karen Audia said, “Success in life is based as much on social/ emotional learning and personal character as it is on reading and writing skills.” Sixteen students received certificates at the ceremony.

Student Council Inductions

The Honorable Patricia K. Romeo of Patchogue Village presided over the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center (BAC) @ PatchogueMedford High School Student Council Induction Ceremony. Romeo swore in members and officers at a ceremony held in the school’s auditorium, saying, “It was a great honor.” Student Advisor Patricia Rizzi said, “We were grateful to have Judge Romeo swear the students in again this year. She is an inspiration to all of them.”

Romeo is the first woman justice in the village and as a long-time resident of Patchogue is committed to serving her community. The ESBOCES Student Council is also committed to serving the community, engaging in several projects throughout the school year. The council’s motto is, “Making a better tomorrow, today!” “The motto is a guiding tool for the students,” said Rizzi. For the past several years, council members have sold pink and white cookies, donating the

proceeds to the Maurer Foundation; this year the students donated $960. After the induction ceremony, Eileen Pillitteri, program manager from the Maurer Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education, presented the students with certificates for dedication and commitment. “The donation will fund so many programs for us. We are very appreciative and love the continued support from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES students,” said Pillitteri.

Nutcracker Coming to Staller

The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker has become a perennial holiday favorite on Long Island. This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. This classical ballet rendition has earned praise

from critics and audiences alike. The cast will be led by guest artist Nick Coppula (Cavalier) formerly with the Pittsburgh Ballet plus Seiskaya’s award winning principal dancer Alexandra Palma with 1st soloists Jenna Lee, Natasha Butkevich, Diana Atoian, Brianna Jimenez, Madison Mursch and Jamie Bergold.

The company’s 2015 Nutcracker season should again garner praise. The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker is considered Long Island’s premier Nutcracker production. Summit a Success According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. The annual event is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC as a free community service program and focuses on patient education, providing an overview of

the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction. Hundreds of guests attended this year’s program which was hosted by Kristin Thorne, WABCTV Eyewitness News Correspondent. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.” “Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained

Griffin. For her efforts in the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit. The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support. The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer.

The program was livestreamed for those who may not be well enough to attend the program in person. “It’s important to the practice to do our part and educate the community. We bring together patients, support groups, and medical professionals, and provide a public forum for learning and networking,” explains Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight. She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy,

a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission. She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. “Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time. Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access them,” said Griffin. “I am

honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.” Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent. Stay Active: The American Heart Association recommends that healthy children, age 2 and older, participate in an hour of moderate to vigorous activity every day. Finding activities the entire family can participate in such as a family walk can become a healthy holiday tradition for the entire family. For every two hours of vigorous activity, adults can add one year to their life expectancy. So make sure and keep your scheduled time at the gym. Stress: Stress can be at its highest level when you are trying to take care of

the family, cook, clean and prepare for any guests. To keep stress to a minimum try some of these tips: Plan ahead to help manage your time. • Focus on one task at a time • Get the kids to help with chores • Take time to relax • Get enough sleep Getting enough sleep can impact your heart health. The American Heart Association recommends adults get six to eight hours of sleep per night. Over the holiday, get into bed early to give yourself enough time to wind down after your day and to fall asleep faster and more soundly. Also, a recent sleep study of teenagers found that greater variability in day-to-day sleep habits was associated with higher calories consumed throughout the day. Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year. This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive,

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas, a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps

adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. Westy is open for drop off 7 days a week. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $12,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Student Assistance Programs - Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) and Teen Intervene. Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of these evidence based-programs

designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need. Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate December 23rd, 2015, through January 3rd, 2016, will get a long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.
