Tuesday, November 23, 2021 was a pretty busy day in the district for Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa. Due to the overwhelming response to his holiday food drive, he delivered many of the proceeds to Pastor Hank Kistler at Connect Church, located at 31 Horseblock Road in Centereach. Connect Church passed the food along to needy families. Legislator Caracappa

also visited an historic Revolutionary site in Coram, referred to as the “Burning of the Hay.” On November 23, 1780, Major Benjamin Tallmadge and approximately 80 of his revolutionary patriots burnt 300 tons of hay in Coram to deny the British that essential winter staple. Caracappa went to the location to pay tribute to this daring act of bravery. “I love how our community played a

significant role in the United States’ success in the Revolutionary War,” stated Legislator Caracappa. More importantly, I am so proud that our modern day community looks out for those in need, and really showed an outpouring of generosity with the many food donations my office received. I am truly fortunate to live in and serve the people of the Fourth Legislative District.”

Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to signiﬁcantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

Connetquot Students Reach Out For The Holidays

Connetquot High School students reached out to the community in a number of ways this Thanksgiving, making the holiday special for struggling community families. The Interact Club, in conjunction with the Connetquot Teachers’ Union, held a coat drive throughout the month of November. Many Town of Islip residents will stay

warm due to the generosity of donors. The Helping Hands Club also collected food and assembled Thanksgiving baskets for community families in need. They also crafted handmade cards to accompany each basket, spreading cheer during the holiday. Additionally, the Ronkonkoma Middle School Peer Leaders

and Student Council collected food for local families at Options for Community Living in Ronkonkoma. Thanks to the students and with the help of the Connetquot Teachers’ Union and faculty donations, baskets with a full Thanksgiving meal were gifted to those families in need.

Congratulations To Connetquot’s Lady T-Bird Cross-Country Team! Connetquot High School girls’ cross-country coach Mike Austin is so proud of this year’s team, and shares the following accomplishments for these talented Lady T-birds! To begin with the team finished 2nd in their Suffolk League II, with an impressive overall record of 5-1. The team also finished first in the two invitational tournaments of the season. Connetquot Boys’ Basketball Season Opens With Exciting Confrontation With Sachem Connetquot High School boys’ varsity basketball coach Kyle Black had been looking forward to the team’s 2021 home opener on November 30th against crosstown rival Sachem HS. So many fans were looking forward to watching the T-birds in action, live, for the first time in over a year, and weren’t disappointed by the team’s outstanding effort.

Connetquot exchanged leads with the visitors throughout the first half, but fell short in the second taking the 56-41 loss confident that they will improve and work towards their potential as the season progresses. The T-birds were led by juniors Mike Catalano (17 points, 4 assists), Dan Youmans (10 points and 10 rebounds) and Malaki Rogers (10 points). Ryan Waring is the

team’s only senior, and the coaches are expecting his leadership, along with the talented, yet inexperienced, underclassmen to excite the fans. Varsity Girls Volleyball Ends 2021 Season With 8th Consecutive Playoff Appearance

Congratulations are again in order for Connetquot coach Karen Edwards and her varsity volleyball team. For the eighth consecutive season, the Lady T-birds earned another invitation to compete in the Suffolk County playoffs. Despite the fact that the ladies fell short (3-1) in the county semifinals to Patchogue-Medford HS this time, they have so much to be proud of. “I am incredibly proud of these young ladies, not only for their hard work during

the playoff push, but for the work they’ve put in all season on and off the court,” said coach Edwards. “I’m excited for what the future holds for CGVV. We will work hard to come back better and stronger next Fall. As for my seniors you will be greatly missed. I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.” Congratulations to the girls’ varsity volleyball team, with a special ‘thank you’ to the following graduating seniors: Karly Colletti, Lexi

Raimondi, Joanna Forrest, Marissa Edwards and Sierra Baldock. Connetquot’s Lady T-birds have won the New York State AA Championship in 2015, 2017 and 2019. The T-birds finished the 2021 volleyball season with an overall record of 11-2 As a result of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association decision not to hold a state championship tournament in 2020, Connetquot is still the reigning AA girls’ volleyball champion!

Connetquot High School hosted its annual World Language Honor Society Induction, held on Oct. 21 in the school auditorium. During the evening event attended by foreign language faculty and administration, 77 students were inducted into the society for their academic success in French, Italian and Spanish. During her opening remarks, WLHS President Stacy Vilca, who studies Italian, explained that foreign language has

always been a large part of her life. “I took foreign language because of my desire to be able to connect with people,” Stacy said. After students Emily Mohr and Hannah Steiner led participants in the Pledge of Allegiance, Manar Mabrouk (French), Emily Rewkowski (Spanish), Stacy Vilca (Italian) read the WLHS oath in their studied language, which was repeated by inductees studying the same language. Honor society advisers then handed each of the students their

certificates. The evening was also punctuated by music from the Connetquot High School Chamber Orchestra. Director of World Languages and ENL Cheryl Sosa congratulated the students on their academic accomplishment. She also said, “Learning a foreign language is how we grow. It invites us to enter other worlds of discovery and helps us see history from a different perspective.”

Three Prominent News Broadcasters Step Up To Help Life’s WORC

Besides being wellknown news broadcasters, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also have a deep respect for, and willingness to help Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services. The organization, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently received $50,000 each from these prominent media professionals. According to Victoria Schneps-Yunis, it was Geraldo Rivera, who made the first contribution. It was Geraldo’s riveting investigative report in the early 1970s, which exposed the atrocities of Willowbrook State School, then the largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Victoria’s daughter was a resident there and she had long been fighting for better conditions. Geraldo’s report, which won him a Peabody Award, and Victoria’s fervent advocacy, ultimately led to Willowbrook’s closing. Victoria then founded Life’s WORC and opened its first group home in Little Neck, Queens 50 years ago. Geraldo has been

It was a visit by Geraldo, his wife Erica Levy, and Victoria to Bill O’Reilly’s home in Montauk where Bill learned more about Life’s WORC. Over lunch, Victoria and Geraldo shared the history of Life’s WORC and the amazing progress it has made over the past five decades. Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was

founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information. See the website at www. dec.ny.gov. All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, to hunt waterfowl, must also be registered in the Harvest Information Program (https://www.dec.ny.gov/ permits/6405.html) and have a federal migratory bird hunting stamp (“duck stamp”). Reports of rabies in

deer have been rare, but hunters and other park users should be alert to the possibility of encountering a rabid raccoon, fox or skunk. To reduce the risk of exposure, follow these guidelines: • Do not approach wildlife that acts abnormally. • Do not touch any animal found dead for unknown reasons. Hunters are advised to wear gloves and eye protection to avoid coming in contact with tissues or bodily fluids that may carry infectious disease. To obtain a copy of the rules and regulations for hunting big and small game, contact any DEC office, including the Regional Wildlife office at SUNY Stony Brook, 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790-3409, (631) 444-0310.
