Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School student-athlete Marina Duszak on being presented with the Ronan Guyer Memorial Scholarship on behalf of the County Cross Country Coaches Association. The award is named in honor of Ronan Guyer, who competed for the Southold High School cross-country team and passed away in 2012. It honors his memory, as it recognizes the courage of the male and female student-athlete whose personal characteristics

of courage, kindness, generosity and service to the community are reflected strongly. “Marina is a four-year member of the crosscountry team, Student Government president, ranks in the top 10 percent of her class, works part time as a Starbucks barista, is the leader of Connetquot’s largest fundraising program and is a cancer survivor,” said Connetquot High School girls cross-country coach Michael Austin. “We are all extremely proud of her.” Marina Duszak has continuously worked to maintain her elite running

status, even after enduring treatment for leukemia. Since beating her disease, Marina holds a steady pace runing a 21-minute 5K. Beyond the world of athletics, she organized a highly successful “Give Back” Chinese auction for the past two years that has raised close to $50,000, which supports the MakeA-Wish Foundation. In addition to receiving the Ronan Guyer Memorial Scholarship, Marina also recently acquired the Student of the Month Certificate courtesy of the Sayville Rotary Club.

Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients to community agencies and coalitions and help facilitate applications. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity to address issues related

to reconstruction. Each patient is encouraged to explore her unique feelings and needs surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery. By providing a safe place to discuss body image, intimacy and fears, each patient is enabled to make an informed decision reflecting her unique needs. Social Workers are also available to support each patient throughout the process and help to facilitate ongoing communication with her plastic surgeon and treatment team. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Taking Learning Sky High Physics equations fueled learning outside of Sachem High School North in the Sachem Central School District as students in Robert Wentzel’s Rocket and Aircraft Design class gathered to test launch multistage rockets they had constructed. Prior to launch, students

worked through various physics calculations to ensure the overall safety and success of their rockets. The studentengineers calculated the thrust necessary to reach 30 miles per hour while allowing the rockets to maintain a straight flight path. Also, students

determined the speed at which their rocket had to fall to make a safe landing and then designed their parachutes accordingly. During the testing phase a focus was placed on unique design elements such as tube and fin size and how each component affected the rockets’ flight.

Art students at Tamarac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District have been working toward something special this year as part of a recycled rainbowcrayon reward program promoting teamwork, respect and recycling

Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District connected literacy and learning during a recent community service initiative – the Read to Feed food drive. The initiative, which benefited the Sachem Food Pantry located at

Sachem High School North, works through a pledge system. For every 75 minutes of reading accomplished outside of school, a friend or family member donated a food item to the participating classes. Throughout the drive the students watched the donations

add up, as colored feathers representing the classes were added to a turkeythemed bulletin board. In addition to the literary connections, the drive also incorporated mathematics, as students tracked all weekly donations and used the data to graph their progress.

Display of Knowledge Students enrolled in Patrick Brennan’s and Tracy McIntyre’s fourthgrade classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently displayed their vast knowledge of the Iroquois people, as they invited family and friends into the school’s atrium for a Native American Museum event. The project came as a conclusion to the students’ classroom lessons on the

Iroquois tribe, covering important topics such as hunting and gathering techniques, the most common forms of shelter and family lineage facts. With their immense knowledge of the tribe on hand, the students chose one particular aspect of Iroquois culture and wrote a detailed report on it and created artistic representations of their topic. Some of the incredible displays of art

included representations of hunting traps, comprehensive longhouses and wigwams, tomahawks, fishing poles and even a Haudenosaunee version of a lacrosse stick. The invited guests enjoyed walking around the room, asking the students about their chosen project and learning important historical facts along the way.

Centereach High School senior Abigail Blount, Newfield High School senior Ally Hu, Dawnwood Middle School seventh grade student Timothy McCarthy and Selden Middle School seventh grade student Cameron Unger were all recognized for their academic excellence, athletic achievements and positive spirit. “Each month the District honors four students who have excelled academically and made an impact on both their peers and the community as a whole,” said Superintendent of

Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “This month, we come together to honor these students and thank the two graduating seniors for their positive contributions in our schools throughout the years. The District also looks forward to the continued and expanding involvement of the two seventh-grade honorees.” Centereach High School senior and November student of the month recipient Abigail Blount was selected for her success in the classroom, extracurricular activities and athletic achievements. Her drive and intelligence has placed her eighth in the class of 2018, and she will be graduating in June with more than 18 college credits. Abigail’s academic

success is matched by her extensive involvement in the National Honor Society, the Art Honor Society, the Spanish Language Honor Society and her position of secretary in the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Additionally, Abigail is a member of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team and was recently selected as captain for her leadership and ability to foster comradery among her teammates. During her free time she coaches youth basketball teams throughout the community. Abigail looks forward to continuing her education next fall at the collegiate level. Ally Hu is a senior at Newfield High School holding an unweighted GPA of 96.9 and has the

potential to graduate in June with 45 college credits. Ally has challenged herself academically throughout her high school career by enrolling in 15 college and advanced placement courses. Despite her vigorous coursework, Ally has made time to be an active member in the Newfield community— serving as president of her sophomore and junior class, president of the Book Club and the Executive Officer of the Foreign Language Honor Society. In her free time, Ally has volunteered more than 150 hours as a counselor at Middle Country’s Camp Invention at Holbrook Road Elementary School. Ally will be continuing her studies next fall at a college

Students of the Month to be determined over the next several months. She will be majoring in either computer science or computer engineering. Dawnwood Middle School seventh-grade student Timothy McCarthy was selected as the school’s student of the month. Timothy, described universally as an “outstanding” student, has maintained high honor roll status since he entered Dawnwood in fall 2016. Along with his high marks, Timothy is a member of the school band, soccer team and basketball team, and he plans to run track in the spring. Timothy has already set a professional goal for himself as he hopes to become a pediatrician. Cameron Unger is a

seventh-grade student at Selden Middle School and was selected as the student of the month, holding a GPA of 96.9. Cameron’s favorite subjects are Spanish and Social Studies; upon completion of the first quarter he holds a 100 average in his Spanish class. He has served as a role model and inspiration to his peers, but he is inspired by his twin sister, Delaney, who has been fighting bone cancer this year. Cameron has told many that he wants to become an inventor one day so he can invent a less toxic form of chemotherapy.

Conquer the Hills

Newest Eagles Honored

On Thursday, November 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Boy Scout Troop 560 at the Coram Fire Department for an Eagle Scout Ceremony honoring the troop’s newest Eagle Scouts, Nicholas Tlockowski and James Anthony Cruz. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is an extremely prestigious honor that is only achieved by approximately 5% of all Boy Scouts. It is the highest rank that a scout can receive and requires the scouts to earn 21 merit badges, complete a community service project, and undergo a

lengthy review process. “Congratulations to James and Nicolas on achieving the rank of Eagle scout,” stated Legislator Anker. “Scouting instills in young men like James and Nicolas the importance of community service. They both worked hard and dedicated their time to making their community a better place, and they are more than deserving of this distinguished honor.” As part of the Eagle Scout process, James and Nicholas had to complete a community service project. Both scouts chose to have their community projects benefit the Sunshine Alternative Education

Center which is located in Port Jefferson Station. The Sunshine Alternative Education Center provides substance abuse and violence prevention programs to students and families in the local community. As his project, Nicholas constructed cinder block planters for the center. The planters were filled with flowers and bushes to beautify the campus for students and employees. James’ project included constructing outdoor benches out of cinder blocks that can be utilized by the center’s students.

MUSICAL PARADE - Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Laura Kimball led a musical parade through the halls of the school, as students from Melissa Lewis’ and Patricia Nixon’s first-grade classes proudly marched the first and second floor hallways to the delight of their classmates. The parade included appearances by Santa Claus, a dancing turkey, a “living” Christmas Tree and a brightly dressed elf who helped Santa greet the happy students. Learning to Upcycle

The Fashion Merchandising students at the Long Island Academy helped to bring attention to America Recycles Day on November 15th, which was created to raise awareness about recycling and purchasing recycled products. Students worked in partnership with Savers in Holbrook to “upcycle,” or compose innovative fashions by repurposing pieces from many garments found at the store. The Fashion Merchandising class is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

The class visited the store last month and each student chose a variety of clothing to bring back to the workshop to produce new apparel utilizing pieces from multiple items, demonstrating how ordinary products can be upcycled into something new. Jackets, dresses, and shirts now bear only a vague resemblance to their original form as they sport new textures, materials, and asymmetric shapes. One student covered the bodice of a woman’s sweater with a half dozen men’s ties, another put a clear vinyl panel on the back of a denim jacket and wrote her name on it in three languages,

and a third embellished a leopard print jacket with contrasting zebra print and faux fuchsia fur. Their next-generation designs debuted in the store on November 15th and are available for purchase. Said Joyce Simms, Fashion Merchandising teacher, “My students took a lot away from this assignment. They engaged in projectbased learning to refine their sewing and garment construction skills, and also learned the value of looking at clothing to see possibilities that others might not, which in the end, allowed them to bring awareness to America Recycles Day.”

CAREER AWARENESS - On Thursday, November 2nd, and Friday November 3rd, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright, in conjunction with many local professionals, spent the day in the hallways and classrooms of RC Murphy Junior High School and Terryville Elementary School. Both schools hosted their annual Career Awareness Day and there were community member participants from many backgrounds. From law enforcement officials to veterinarians, to artists and musicians, the students were provided with a wide array of career paths to choose from and learn about.
