Holiday Season Food Drive

he Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas collected over 100 bins of food for holiday season distribution by way of shoppers at the Ronkonkoma Stop & Shop. As a result, community donations filled the shelves of Charlotte’s Tables and The Ministries food pantries with much needed items. They were also able to donate money to St. Joseph’s Outreach and Church of the Resurrection. Thanks to all who participated.

DANCING WITH THE STARS - Connetquot Central School District OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) recently held a Dancing with ‘Stars’ event to promote the “All In” campaign to combat bullying. The event was sponsored by OBMS Student Council, who coordinated for the school’s auditorium to be turned into a ballroom. Connetquot’s ‘star’ teachers and staff, including Interim Superintendent Dr. Ronald Smith and Board of Education President Lee Kennedy, performed before excited crowds of students, parents and members of the school administration for three nights. The winners were selected at the end of each night’s competition by a combination of panel and audience votes and participation.

Preparing For The Postseason

On October 17th, the Connetquot High School Field Hockey team took on local rival Ward Melville in a game that could be a preview of the upcoming league championship tournament. That game was also the last scheduled home game for the Thunderbirds, as they recognized the seniors that have been so important to the school’s Field Hockey program. Head Coach Jen Piscitelli reports that “… the Connetquot Field Hockey team is having a great year! Our record is currently 9-3-0, holding on to 4th place, looking forward to a playoff spot and hopefully another home game. If we finish in this position

at the end of the season, we will be named Division Champions, a title we have not held since 2011.” “So, the players and staff are working towards that goal in a tough division. All I ask for my team is ‘to play each game as if there were no tomorrow’. The team, led by our seniors, is definitely leaving their hearts on the field for each game. Senior Erin Massmann was recently named the Field Hockey ‘Player to Watch’ by MSGVarsity.” In a pre-game ceremony involving parents and friends, Coach Piscitelli thanked the seniors for their dedication to the sport, and the Connetquot Field Hockey program

over the years. She also extended her thanks to the parents for their support of their ‘girls’ and the team. While the outcome of the Melville game wasn’t what they wanted, it did reinforce the players’ determination to work even harder to end the year in the post season, with exciting wins. Congratulations to the entire Connetquot HS Varsity Field Hockey team, especially the leadership of it’s seniors: Christina Malinowski, Erin Massmann, Kristina Balsano, Torrye Zullo, Grisha Graziose, Danielle Villanueva, Angela Schuler, Tiffany Zullo and Allison Inga.

Music Society Inductions

On October 15th, Ms. Susanne Bailey, Principal of Connetquot’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS), and Tri-M Honor Society Advisor Melissa Johnson, welcomed family and friends to the school’s 3rd Annual Music Honor Society Induction ceremony. Mrs. Johnson explained the importance of the Tri-M Honor Society and congratulated the new inductees, and their parents.

Mrs. Johnson went on to say “The Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Tri-M Music Honor Society inducted 53 new members and recognized 23 returning members this year. Tri-M is an honor society for music students of outstanding academic accomplishment with focus on community and school service.” Connetquot’s Director of Music Education, Mr. Jon Michael Lasher, added that “The organization

promotes student leadership, and these students are the future leaders in the music department, their school, and community.” Lasher was a member of Tri-M as a Connetquot HS student. Congratulations to the current, and newly inducted, members of the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Tri-M Honor Society!

Into The Black Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia recently invited Robert Vetter and Jamie Reason to visit the school and talk to the students about the lives of Native Americans on the Great Plains. Vetter is an anthropologist and educational consultant of Native American studies, while Reason is of Cherokee descent. On October 18th these historians, and wonderful story-tellers, described the lives of Native American adults, and children, who lived on the Great Plains,

in the western part of the United States. Jamie Reason dressed in typical Native American clothing, and talked to the students about the culture of these hardy people. He allowed the students to handle the leather hides, and clothing, that the natives wore, and explained how they made all their clothes and tools from what ‘Mother Earth’ provided. He also created a mini living area that the students could walk through. Bob Vetter took the students outside to demonstrate the types of games that children of

their ages would play, for fun, and to develop skills they would need to survive the challenging life of the Native Americans on the Plains. Overall the students had a chance to learn a bit about the culture of another civilization, and another time and place. After the presentation, students had a chance to ask questions. Mr. Pollak, teachers and students thanked Mr. Vetter and Mr. Reason for the visit, which provided them with a greater appreciation for a brave, and talented, people.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

The event was held at Applebee’s in Patchogue. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps

keep students on the path to high school graduation and successful futures. On a recent Sunday, the students welcomed people to Applebee’s, directed them to tables, and for a donation of $10 were served pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, and a beverage. Thank You Breakfast During the month of November, the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) has made an effort to show it’s appreciation to our local heroes, the volunteer firemen that protects us, and our families. On Saturday, November 23rd, CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., and several members, took the time to visit the Bohemia and West Sayville firefighters with a ‘thank you’ bagel breakfast, including coffee and ‘fixins’. Felicio told the firefighters at each fire station, “On behalf of our active and retired teachers, this breakfast is a small token of our appreciation

for what you volunteers do, day in and day out for our communities. Unfortunately, sometimes, people take your sacrifices for granted, and we want to let you know just how appreciated you all are. So, thank you for what you do.” The CTA President also expressed his gratitude to active CTA member Annamarie Damore, who teaches at the John Pearl Elementary School, and retired teachers Pat Goff and Virginia Spiess, for arranging our ‘Fireman Thank You’ breakfasts. The Bohemia Fire Department breakfast was interrupted by the wail of the fire siren, and it took

minutes for the volunteers to drop their coffee, put on their protective gear, and jump aboard the waiting fire engine! On November 10th members of the CTA stopped by the Lakeland Fire House in Ronkonkoma with breakfast. Felicio would also like to thank Joann Ianne, a teacher at the Idle Hour Elementary School, for making those arrangements. The CTA President also said that arrangements are being made to visit the volunteers at Community Ambulance with their own ‘Thank You’ breakfast in the near future.

DOORWAYS TO LIFE - Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School’s Library Media Specialist, Karen Deaner, recently completed a project called School Libraries-Doorways to Life with her 3rd grade students. Ms. Deaner’s students were paired with children from Anton Blobocnik Primary School in Postojna, Slovenia. Each student was asked to create bookmarks for exchange that illustrated the landmarks and culture of their community. John Pearl students used New York landmarks on one side of the bookmark and a scene from one of their favorite books on the other.

that an ongoing focus of the organization is to support research that can lead to clinical trials of new treatments against ALS that improve upon current treatments, slow down the disease process or cure ALS. “Neuroscience is getting ever closer to the goal of finding new approaches to treating ALS and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases,” said Dennis Choi, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. “With Stony Brook’s expertise in neuroscience research, we hope to contribute importantly to this global effort.” In 2014, the Ride for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped loaner vans designed to make mobility for patients and their families more manageable. Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multi-length bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.

The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. The pledge is in conjunction with the match from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant.
