Indoor air quality can be a big concern for many families. After all, in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust— including dangerous chemicals and other pollutants—is created annually through everyday living. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated as much as seven times a day. Over time, this leads to built-up contaminants in the ductwork. Since your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home, you want to keep it clear.
Honoring Our Heroes Students lined the hallways of Tecumseh Elementary School, as a procession of nearly a dozen veterans from every branch of the military paraded through the building. The retired servicemen and women came on behalf of the American Legion, and represented several posts across Long Island. The event served as an opportunity for the students to honor and thank the veterans for their service. Tecumseh
Elementary School (TES) is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides support and services to elementary school-aged children with special needs. After the parade, the veterans visited multiple classrooms to eat breakfast with the students and discuss what it was like serving in the military. Students asked the retired soldiers about their time in the armed forces. As the day came to a close,
the students presented the veterans with handmade cards thanking them for their service. “This is a great way to help make history real for our students,” said Danielle Dennis, a fifth grade teacher at TES. “It also helps the veterans feel a stronger connection with the younger generations. We’re really happy we could make this connection happen in a way that benefits our students and our veterans.”

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Mr. Kapfer replaces Sam Ahmed who was appointed as the district’s Director of Special Programs and Data Reporting. With close to 20 years of experience in education, Mr. Kapfer joins Longwood from Kings Collegiate Charter School in Brooklyn, where he served as the Assistant Dean of Students, Math Team Instructional Leader, and Special Education Coordinator. In that capacity, he observed and supported classroom teachers, assisted in student discipline, and served as an instructional
leader in mathematics, algebra, and special education. Prior to his position at Kings School, he worked as a teacher at Albany Preparatory Charter School in Albany. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Relay Graduate School of Education in New York. “I’m honored to become part of the team at Longwood High School,” said Mr. Kapfer. “I have met many members of the school community over this past week, and it is clear how passionate this community is about supporting one another to provide a positive, well-rounded educational experience for our students.” Mr. Kapfer received his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Master’s
degree in Mathematics, Statistics, and Probability from the University at Albany, and earned his School Building and School District Leadership and Certification in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. “Mr. Kapfer comes to Longwood with extensive administrative experience and we’re confident that he will work closely with the high school administrative team to ensure that our students continue to receive the personalized, rigorous education that our community expects,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Student Creates New Logo For Yaphank Fire Department Mario Braxton Jr., a senior at Longwood High School, recently paid a visit to the Yaphank Fire Department for the unveiling of his logo, now a permanent part of the department’s newest fire truck. Under the guidance of art teacher Claire Hall, twenty students submitted potential designs to the
Yaphank Fire Chief, with Mario’s “Pride, Spirit, Heart” logo chosen. Mario’s design is based on Longwood’s mascot and slogan. “I chose the lion because the Yaphank Fire Department is in the Longwood School District, and there is a powerful meaning behind the word, lion,” said Mario. “A
lion symbolizes courage, power, and strength, much like our local firefighters. The words Pride, Spirit, Heart represent our school slogan, and that is what the firefighters represent in our community.” After graduation in June 2020, Mario plans to study graphic design in college.

DR. TONY ABRAHAM - New York Imaging Specialists is pleased to welcome Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, an esteemed board-certified nuclear radiologist to the team. where Dr. Abraham earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dr. Abraham completed an internship at Westchester Medical Center. After finishing his residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital/ NYU School of Medicine, he completed a nuclear medicine residency where he served as Chief Resident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Abraham completed his PET/CT and Nuclear Oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Abraham sees this as a very exciting time in nuclear medicine, with
